Destiny Beta Was Largest Console Beta In History For New IP
We know a lot of people played the Destiny beta. Even Bungie was "gobsmacked" at the number of participants.
The developer has announced the exact numbers today and yeah, this beta test was indeed popular. Super popular.
Over 4.6 million individuals tried out the Destiny beta, and don't forget that it only ran from July 17 through July 29, including two days of exclusivity to PlayStation platforms and two days of maintenance. That's impressive. It's also a record, according to Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg:
"This is the biggest beta of this console generation by a wide margin and the largest console beta ever for a new video game IP to date. Hosting a beta at this scale is an incredible feat, so we're thrilled to see the phenomenal response. But the beta is just a taste of what's to come. We're counting down the days to our launch day, September 9th."
Bungie COO Pete Parsons said his team was "totally blown away" by that number, and added that the accumulated feedback has proven "invaluable." For many who enjoyed their time in the beta, there's no doubt that they'll be flocking to stores to grab Destiny when it launches in a little over five weeks.
