Rumor: Certain Third-Party Exclusives Headed To PS4

For the most part, third-party exclusives are typically timed exclusives, as the publisher doesn't want to miss out on more sales.

However, that isn't always true. Sometimes, a game just remains exclusive to a particular platform. Many figured Ryse: Son of Rome is an example of that, as we heard nothing that would indicate a release for the PlayStation 4.

But things may be changing: According to industry insider Tidux, the prevailing rumor winds say developers are talking about moving to the PS4, where the majority of next-gen gamers are right now:

"rumor from Cologne, third-party exclusive titles to #PS4 is coming. developers moving to the platform where the most people are. classic. but nothing that will be presented now, later"

He added that we wouldn't hear anything about this at Gamescom, so we'll have to wait. This comes shortly after Crytek boss Cevat Yerli said there was a good chance that Ryse 2 would come to the PS4, as they weren't very happy with Xbox One sales. As far as I'm concerned, you can keep Ryse (wasn't very good to begin with), but it's nice to hear devs siding with the PS4 early on.

Me-thinks you picked the wrong horse, Crytek. But Insomniac did, too, and that's worse. :(

It's also a daily community site, so I think delivering straight news is okay now and then but the core of what I want to do here and I think Ben agrees is to provide information along with what is considered an "entertaining" bent. That often involves clearly separate opinions "whenever the word 'I' is used".

Inform and entertain, incite discussion. The writers must be fully rounded personalities to do this. Otherwise it's just news reports and PSXE functions in a different way imo.

Hey Killa,

Just thought I would remind you that this is a Playstation website. Ben's job is to present news stories related to the Playstation platform. This site is biased by nature, therefore the editor being biased is totally acceptable and expected.

Also I wouldn't exactly call Ben biased, he owns an Xbox and plays most of the big Xbox games, as well as other platforms. He, just like the majority of people here, prefers Playstation.

I completely disagree even in 'theory'. The editor of a platform specific news website has absolutely zero obligation to be non-biased when it comes to presenting that news.

So is Sunset Overdrive an exclusive MS ip? It would seem to me Insomniac could more than double their sales of the game if they brought it over.
I'll pick up Ryse on PC for $5 just to see how cool it looks. I read it's the best looking console game at the moment.

MS publishes so they own it so far. I think it would actually hit the PS fanbase better though.

Well MS published Ryse but does not own the IP and i think the same type of deal was done with Insomniac... Most likely a one year exclusive deal to X1

MS doesn't own Sunset Overdrive, they allowed Insomniac to retain ownership, which means it could move to Sony's console.

The PS4 might get Sunset Overdrive 2 or Ryse 2 but as long as Microsoft has the publishing rights for the first games in those series, then those particular games won't being ported over. It took five years to bring the original Mass Effect to PS3 and even then I would bet that EA bought the console rights back.

Crytek is in severe economical problems these days. As far as I understand they are restructuring from being also a games developer to becoming a pure engine-making company.
So needless to say, the sales of Ryse obviously wasn't even close to meeting expectations.

Initially I thought this is sad, but if this makes them focus more on the Cryengine and focus on getting more developers out there use it, it might actually be better this way. Cause I really think their engine is utterly awesome.

I think it's safe to assume that Crytek didn't listen to their gamer-sense to know that a game built from the ground up with Kinect in mind was somehow going to make them money. Kinect and core gamer are two things that just don't go together. As MS has finally learned themselves, costing them a generation in the process.

Pretty silly mistake I think Ryse was. They need to do more with Crysis and come up with a new IP that isn't Ryse related.

I'm all for them fighting the Unreal 4 engine though.

@World, well I'm a big fan of the Unreal engine too, so... :)

But really, I think there's plenty of room for both. Unreal seem faster to develop for (just my non-educated impression) while Cryengine really makes some of the most impressive visuals I've seen.

That said, man I've tried some of the demos of Unreal 4 (it's free on their site for all to download) and I gotta say, that engine is up for some *major* enhancements now.

@Temjin,
I see that MS exclusive title most like a cry for help. MS wanted something that looked amazing and used their Kinect, went to some of the best on the market and Crytek said "yes" hoping that the new Xbox would own the US like the predecessor did.

I feel sorry for Crytek.

hehe yea, Beam. It's a lot like what happened to Square-Enix when they agreed to publish a bunch of exclusive jRPG's only on 360. but of course, S-E didn't have much of an excuse for their lack of quality... either way, even when Mistwalker got it right with Lost Odyssey their base didn't seem to care.

Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Borderlands, Bioshock, all excellent use of the Unreal engine last gen. That engine has gotten an unfair reputation.

Ryse sucked pretty bad. Not only did it not look as good as God Of War 3, it played like the developers were confused on what the game was supposed to play like.

I haven't played the game so I'm willing to accept what you say about the gameplay but come on, GoW3 did not look better. And that's not a knock against GoW, Ryse simply had way more power to work with.

Come on Knight, Of course Ryse looked better than GoW since its a new generation system the game was built in but the gameplay and story wasnt all that good especially when compared to GoW

Ryse is definitely the best looking game on the Xbox One.

It isn't going to happen. Why? Because they are going to make another remake of TLOU, again, and this time it is going to be even prettier AND at 120 fps! OMG who needs a new game now? Run run go get that ND GAME!

End of line.

This does serve as an example of how much of a mess Don Mattrick left behind. If the Xbone sees third-party exclusivity come to pass then it's going to be a very rough decade in Redmond. Look at history: the dominance of the PS2 bought de facto exclusivity which drove PS2 sales and made exclusivity attractive. In 2003, it didn't matter what XBox or Gamecube had going for them; Playstation had them beat.

People forgot the X360? all those announced "fully exclusive on X360, never on PS3, with even "only on X360" on the bow, and that came on PS3 after 1 year? Lost planet, Eternal sonata, Bioshock ...
The sad thing is in USA contracts Microsoft can order a company to lie to customers and retailers about a future release on another console. I don't know why they would stop in this generation.

And why would Sony pay anything? For meat sold to fast foods, or flour sold to baker's there are no exclusivity or timed exclusivity, the choice is purely free of manufacturers to sell to whomever they want.
