Sony On Not Showing The PS4: "Frankly, A Box Is A Box"

I swear, one of the biggest reasons I couldn't wait to see the PlayStation 4 at last week's PlayStation Meeting was this- I'd finally be able to stop using this silly fake mock-up image to represent Sony's next console.

But here I am. Still using it. And why? Because we still have no idea what the PS4 will look like, as Sony didn't show the actual machine during the conference.

Personally, besides the lack of a proper image, this doesn't bother me. And as SCE UK boss Fergal Gara told Videogamer, it was far more important "to see what the damn thing does." Gara acknowledged the gamer backlash but tried to put everything into perspective:

"[There was a] bit of cynicism over 'we didnt see the box' and that kind of stuff, 'we don't know quite what date and quite what price'. I understand that frustration but frankly, a box is a box. Is that really the most important thing?

So right, it wasn't available to show last night, it wasn't considered appropriate to show it last night. So what? It's much more important to see what the damn thing does. The shiniest piece of black, green or purple plastic ever, you know, whatever, so what? It's not the most important thing."

A BBC headline described the PS4 as the "invisible console" and fans everywhere expressed great displeasure at not seeing the system. We assume we'll see that at E3 but in the meantime, we'd much rather have an exact date and price. That is the most important thing for a great many.

This doesn't sound like the normal Sony. Sony is usually proud to show off their stylish hardware designs. I understand his point but I think he should've positioned his response better.

true however they did also say that the console wasn't exactly finished yet so maybe they don't want to show off what is essentially an un-finished console

1 month later....
Introducing the PS4....
*displays a mid-sized atx desktop tower. complete with dual optical drive bays, one unused, and some plastic rectangle AMD and Sony PS4 stickers haphazardly placed in the bottom right corner of the case front*

"A box is a box, right?"

=p

They are probably tired of hearing a chorus of imbeciles saying "We want to see the box" after they worked incredibly hard to put on that wonderful show of technological possibilities.

I think Highlander would be happy if you replaced that mock up image with that of a PC ;)

Ahem, yeah people have a thing for "But what's it LOOK like?" I mean you wouldn't be as pleased with a Ferrari that looked like a Prius. Also the human mind has a fit when it doesn't have an image to file information under.

Doesn't bother me any though, it's like holding back a bit of the full reveal to leave people wanting more. Just so long as it doesn't look like the current slim PS3. If they are going with cheaper innards then they might as well splurge on the buttons, plastic, and aesthetics.

frankly i thought the same thing I mean ok when the ps3 launched and it was $600 everyone fussed n blah blah "i just wanna play games" was said...those words are even still said...not only on this sight. You know what it can or will eventually be able to do, you know what the cam can do...dont know if it's packed in... we know it doesnt do backwards compatability per say. we know the specs. While it'd be nice to know how this looks visually, knowing what it does is more important at this point The internet will erupt if we get no e3 showing however

I think this was a "PS4 announcement" Not the full on reveal. Come TGS or E3 we will see it. Im in no rush for the system. I want to see more games that will be on it and possibly more about the cross play stuff.

I also don't care what the console looks like and didn't feel let down that they didn't show the console, what it looks like to me is not important but what it can do is.

I have seen a lot of people get angry that they did not show it, but meh you can't please everyone though. :/

True. I've seen the entire 2-hour announcement event and did not even realize that no actual hardware was shown. Who cares about how the freaking box will look like? I'm more interested about what the PS4 will be able to deliver wonce it's out!

Seriously, people nowadays struggle at determining the things that actually matter.

Honestly, while I like some console designs better than others, when it comes to consoles, I'm more interested in what's under the hood and what games and features it provides.

" a box is a box".
THAT is the EXACT reason why $ony is in the sh*t hole there in!
$ony use to be like apple, they produced such beautiful devices!
TVs, speakers, phones, no matter what it was if it had sony you knew it would look nice!
until the ps3 came out, cost the company a sh*t ton of money, and they became so god dam tight a$$ed!
a box IS NOT a box!
dont underestimate looks, as the saying goes you cant judge a book by its cover but you can judge a book by its looks!
no, seriously though, a device needs to look and feel nice.
if i had a nickel for every time i heard someone say no im not buying a slim because its fugly, id be rich enough to buy out the big 3 20 times over by now!
dont underestimate how important the looks of a product are, there ALLOT more influential than you think!
if something looks nice its going to catch peoples attention, so your going to have to do allot to loose them as a customer.
if something looks sh*t you already lost their attention so your going to have to do allot to get it back!
theres a reason why apple is THE most valuable company in the WORLD!
and every single one of their devices looking, and feeling like a million bucks, is more than a coincidence to that fact.......

Indeed, can you believe that they are being dismissive about the design of the casing of their flagship product?

just goes to show how far from grace the god has fallen.
i knew the issues with the ps3, and the companies stock had shaken them.
but not THIS much!
oh well, im hoping we can put all this behind us because by the time the ps4 needs replacing hopefully the world will be ready for cloud gaming.
its just sad that we have to remember the last gaming console as one that was a bit disappointing from the get go.
once a bastard child, always a bastard child!

A box isn't *just* a box, though. It does matter what the stuff you put in your living room looks like.

A better argument would be that Sonys stuff ALWAYS looks good, so there's simply nothing to worry about.

But yeah - it would be fun to see how it looks.

ps3 slim looked good?
same with the super slim.
most of their stuff looks good, but there certainly is some stinkers, and most of those are their newer things.
the super slim ps3 for instance, the ripple plastic screams cheap!

I think the slim looks great, same with the fatty. I wish they all had the standard stereo equipment width though, cause they look a bit clumsy in my rack, but other than that I think they look just great.

The new one however looks like some cheap Chinese rip-off. But let's ignore that one - I think most do anyway.

Look at their TVs, mobiles, stereos, cameras, their whole line of hardware. They know how to make stuff look good, they really do.

sometimes they do, sometimes they dont.
my bravia in the bedroom looks like a cheap chineese knockoff!
very cheap looking.
but then my HX800 looks sweet!
but then my Z5000 i think its called looks again cheap.
and the bluray player looks like it came of the 90s!
some things they make look really nice, others, not so much.
heres to hoping the ps4 is more ps3 phat, than ps3 slim!
especially the piano black plastic and chrome, that was CLASSAAAAAAAY!!!!!
wish they would go with a brushed aluminium with chrome edges finish, that would look really nice!

I watched the BBC news report the night after and there exact words were 'Sony have announced the new Playstation 4, but haven't shown anything off except their new controller.' Absolute BS, it seems they completely overlooked any of the multiple amazing showcases of all the hot titles heading our way. People need to be patient, it will come in time!

WOW! Can you imagine this quote;

"a box is a box. "

...being used in reference to a brand new PlayStation by Ken Kutaragi? Or for that matter any of the rest of the old PlayStation team? This is their key brand and key product and they are dismissing it's design with "a box is a box"? What are they gonna do deliver an anonymous rectangular black box with a PS logo?

I mean, just...wow! They're talking dismissively about the exterior design of their own flagship product!

Actually this is another indication to me that there will be no PS5 because they will try to go device independent next. Why bother with excellence in design, a box is a box after all, especially when you intend to stop making them and go fully service based.

WHAT?!?!? Really? Maybe for the XBox, 'a box is just a box'...but we are talking about the PS4 here. The predecessor to one of the most beautiful consoles released (original PS3, not slim 1 or 2). And yet you want me to place this so called “just a box” in my living room? Where I would have to see it every day??? Very bad statement from Fergal Gara; to think that people would buy it no matter what it looked like? I’m sorry but if it’s part of my entertainment center, it better look damn good because I sure as hell ain’t putting up an eye sore! *especially if its “purple plastic.”

Note: its nice to know what the machine does but as consumers, we also go on looks. Can't have one without the other.

I'm w/ Sony on this one... While knowing what my next gaming console will look like would be awesome it's REALLY not THAT important is it?

I have loved the look of the Playstations since the original one and will buy the PS4 regardless, but of the 3 generations I do love the look of my PHAT PS3 the best... Hey Ben, maybe THAT could be a pole or something, "Which Playstation console looks the best", and break it down to all renditions of each of the consoles... Oh, JUST the looks, like the original Playstation/PSOne, PS2 original/Slim, and PS3/Slim/Super Slim, NOT the whole 20/40/60/80gig blah blah blah...
