Bungie: Forget 1080p/60FPS; All That Matters Is Gameplay

It's a common query these days: "Will it run at 1080p and 60 frames per second?"

But numbers aren't everything, as Destiny production director Jonty Barnes explained to The Sixth Axis in a new interview.

Barnes says that while gamers and manufacturers often make a big deal out of the 1080p/60fps issue, the bottom line is that gameplay is paramount:

"I feel like as an industry, people are caring less and less about numbers, which is great. It always used to be about graphics, and though 1080p and 60Hz are still out there, and as platform providers get competitive around those things it seems to magnify the importance of it.

But it isn't about that. It's actually what is an awesome gameplay experience for the player and anything that gets in the way of the best player experience is baggage. I'm quoting directly from [Bungie co-founder Jason Jones] there. And, you know, as we've seen over the last few years, computer games are so much better, they're so much higher quality, and it's much more about the experience and less about those statistics."

Of course, one could argue that the frames per second subject involves the gameplay. Even then, though, many will claim it just doesn't matter for certain games. While it may be more important in the FPS realm, it probably isn't half as critical in a role-playing game, for instance. Then again, it would depend on the kind of RPG.

Oh, it can be complex but for the most part, Barnes is right: It is all about the gameplay experience.

He's right. Its all about the creativity behind a project. PS4 is more powerful, that has become common knowledge with a few people who refuse to believe it. What should be focused on is the games that come out for the platform of choice.

Bloodborne runs at 30fps, and I couldn't give 2 shizzes.

He's wrong mostly, gameplay has gotten more streamlined since the old days where everything played differently. Gameplay is roughly the same in all AAA games, even the controls on the controller are all about the same now, so the graphics and stuff tend to matter more. Gameplay is what matters in indie games much more, hence the graphics.

Halo, Cod, Uncharted, Gears, God of War, whatever else ya got all have their quite simple forms of gameplay and rarely does anything like Darksiders pop up to incorporate many different kinds of playing.

Personally I like story best in most cases, even though any game can be a TPS adventure like Uncharted it can't have that storytelling ability without the team.

I really can't agree about the notion that gamers are caring less about numbers. I've been thinking it's been quite the opposite. It seems everyone gets bent out of shape over pixels and hertz these days.

I do agree that the overall gameplay package is king. 60FPS is always nice but the pros and cons should always be weighed in light of the project at hand. Sometimes a game benefits more from graphics detail and complexity moreso than speed.

now this my friends is quality gameplay. It doesn't get much better than what we see at 2:15 on the video.
It'd be great in 1080 or 720, 60 or 30, either way. Quality stuff.

1080p vs 720p (790p, 900p, whatever) is not that overly noticeable to me. Very true that gameplay is a big factor contributing to the success of a game.

30 FPS vs 60 FPS is a actually a pretty big selling point for me. With 60 FPS, the controls feel sharper, the gameplay and visuals are smoother, and the overall experience is better.
Heck, it's one of the main reasons Call of Duty is so popular! Consistent 60 frames per second!

I'm very much looking forward to getting my white PS4 with Destiny and playing The Last of Us at 60 FPS.

Sorry Bungie, you're only half right there for me. resolution isn't a big deal, but frame rate is.

Yeh the whole 1080p thing does really bother me but the difference between 30 ad 60 fps is huge. Bf4 on ps4 at 60fps feels so much better than its ps3 version at 30fps. Your right it is part of the reason cod became popular 60fps makes games feel so much smoother and for fast shooters it makes all the difference.

60 fps is a big big deal for certain types of games.

lol My grandmother had it done when she had her cataracts removed. She's 90 and always jokes that she has the eyes of a 20 year old. She also says that now they just need to invent lazer ear surgery. I once asked her, "Lazer Ear surgery?" and she said, "What? Tazo beer brewery?"

She's hilarious. And deaf. So so very hard of hearing.

Nice excuse for devs that are unable to reach that kind of goal. And did you noticed? - this became so common for them to make that statement if the game cannot deliver!
I wonder how many console generations must we wait until 1080p/60fps will be a standard? 1080p with 60 fps IS the deal these days. When I am playing TloU/MGS5 and then switch to I:SS it just feels bad...

60 fps is not just shiny graphics. More importantly, it makes movement much more human and free.

Look at the old game Tobal No. 1 on the ps1. Watch how smooth the 60 fps characters move and how fast they are. It is awesome. The only thing is that if you do use 60 fps the graphics wont be quite as detailed. But I would much rather play a game that runs fast and smooth than be very detailed and very clunky.

I realize 30 fps is the safe bet to go because it is really the middle ground in terms of graphics, speed, and gameplay.

As long as all that rez & fps stuff gets sorted before project morpheus goes on sale then i'm cool.
This time next year 1080p 60fps should'nt be a problem for multi plat devs.

For some games it doesn't matter but for some it really does. Especially with this new gen and going next gen involves better graphics and display as a big plus.
