The Crew Should Be 1080p And 30FPS On PS4, Xbox One

The frames per second subject remains a hotly contested one among gamers.

Now, a Ubisoft representative has confirmed the FPS goals for the upcoming racer, The Crew. According to MCV, they're aiming for 30 frames per second at a resolution of 1080p on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

This comes after a Ubisoft forum member complained that the PC beta test was locked at 30 frames per second. This prompted the following response from Ubisoft:

"The final game will run in 1080p with 30 frames per second on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, and will support up to 5760 x 1080p on PC for triple screen set-ups. Right now the team is focusing on providing an optimal experience for all players."

However, they later added that the team is striving for 60 frames per second on PC. There's no telling if that will happen but of course, there's a big difference between 30 and 60. For racing games, locking in 60 can be tough...

I wonder if Ubisoft is going to be subjected to the same kind of s**tstorm for this decision that Sony/Evolution was for Driveclub...

being open world and billed as something of an MMORPG racer I think it can get away with being 30fps. It allows the team to do more with landscape dynamics and I think the team will likely rally to it's defense if pressed as to why they opted for this performance balance. I don't think NFS Most Wanted got too much heat when Criterion opted for 30fps instead of 60.

but of course, you never know.

Anyone that actually plays racing games instead of jerking off over stats doesn't care. If you make a crap game, it doesn't matter how many frames per second it runs at.

Why do I feel like the PS4 version was scaled down for the sake of console parity?

This gen multi plats aren't as technically different between hardware. With the XO and PS4 being more similar in design we should expect the average quality of a multiplat to be closer to exclusive games. I'm not saying there won't be advantages to doing things exclusive to one set of hardware, but it would seem to be certain the gap won't be as large as last gen.

Unless they're building something that won't run on the majority of PCs used for gaming, they're unlikely to make something that couldn't run at 60fps on PC given the right hardware. A couple of GTX 780 Tis should do it - and if it doesn't, they can always drop resolution to achieve it.

As for PS4/XB1, 30fps is fine - maybe I'm just old and slow, but while I like 60fps where available, I can enjoy 30fps (and less) with no trouble. Most PS1 racers struggled for a locked 30, back in the day, and I still enjoyed 'em ;).
