Disgaea 5: An Ambitious Entry That PS3 Couldn't Handle

If you're a big fan of the acclaimed Disgaea series, listen up.

Following this weekend's announcement of Disgaea 5, the first next-gen franchise entry, publisher Nippon Ichi Software has given all you strategy/RPG lovers more info.

According to the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation magazine (as translated by Gematsu), players will assume the role of a demon boy named Kiria, who seeks revenge against Demon Emperor Void Dark. Seraphine joins Kiria on his quest; she's a princess of the Gorgeous Underworld. As you might expect, the game will boast a bunch of crazy characters.

If you're wondering why Disgaea 5 isn't coming to the PlayStation 3, NIS president Sohei Niikawa offered the following explanation:

"We thought about going multi-platform with PlayStation 3, but doing so would've made the PS3 the standard. Since we're making it, I want to be able to offer something that could only be done with the PlayStation 4."

Niikawa added that the new effort will boast 100 characters on screen simultaneously, which is a lot more than a PS3 version, which would only be able to handle 10. Sounds juicy! Disgaea 5 is scheduled to arrive in Japan in the Spring of 2015; no word yet on when it'll come stateside.

aren't all the disgaea games the same with tiny sprites?.. what could the PS4 do that the PS3 couldn't do with tiny sprites ad grid combat?

Excellent question unless they plan to change things drastically. It's probly just cheaper not to dev on PS3.

I like the word "standard" that he uses. In my mind, that's what these crossdressers are. Dragon Age Inquisition will be great, but it'll still have a last gen game as its standard. Destiny too, until it evolves.

Sony bought this game so more PS4 systems would be sold. They know the fans who buy this game will move on to another system just for this game. Nintendo does the same with Fire Emblem and it's handheld systems.

....... And Disgaea has a large Japanese audience and no one owns XBOX products in Japan. There's that.

It'd be fun to see more detailed sprites and levels. If not, the game should probably be a download title. Either way, I'm getting it. It's a wonderful franchise.

Disgaea is awesome, but it's very low tech. The PS3 games look like they could have easily been PS2 games. I want to get rid of my PS3, so I'd prefer this on PS4 anyway, but I doubt it needs the extra processing power or will seriously use it.
