Will Destiny Match Your Definition Of "Next-Gen"?

It's such a subjective term: "Next-gen."

Everyone has very different definitions. Some say it has more to do with gameplay than graphics, while others ask for even more; they want never-before-seen innovation, creativity and even revolution.

Many will agree that we haven't seen a great example of "next-gen" just yet, although some might argue for Titanfall (which I see as just another glorified shooter, but whatever). Right now, it's not ridiculous to say that the best games of 2014 are actually upgraded versions of 2013 titles. However, all of that might be about to change with the arrival of Bungie's massively anticipated Destiny, which launches next week.

Do you think this will be the game that finally makes you go, "yep, this is next-gen"? Or will you find yourself unimpressed and somewhat disappointed? The question is this: What will it take for you to make the aforementioned statement? What will really blow your socks off? Perhaps because you've already played the Destiny beta, you've formulated an early opinion of the game. Hell, maybe you've already passed judgment based on that experience. Either way, share!

I thought Infamous Second Son and Thief felt next gen to me. Thief needed more work, and is not nearly as good as the original but the smallest things such as peeking over railings, made it feel like a true next gen game. Destiny follows a formula we've seen all throughout the PS3 era, which is aim and shoot stuff. With super jumping and coop.

I do hope its more than that though, I really really do. People need to gain interest in more interesting things.

My idea of next-gen is a game that can't be created as it is within a smaller footprint of a prior generation. If a next-gen game can simply have it's level of detail reduced etc but retains more or less the exact same game play as the current-gen counterpart has, then I can't think of it as wholly next-gen. Perhaps I can in just the visuals but not in the design of the game itself.
When looking at something like Assassin's Creed Unity it's clear there are many qualities that can't just be scaled down in resolution to make it work to match the footprint of the prior gen. (It can support like 5,000 on screen NPC's)
So while Destiny might be pretty, it ain't my definition of next-gen. From what I can tell everything and anything going on in the beta on PS4 was happening on PS3, but with the expected downgrade in graphics detail.

So by your definition, any game that comes out on the PS4/XB1 and PS3/XB360 cannot be next gen, right? I'm not sure I agree but I'm also not if that's exactly what you mean.

I'm getting it on the PS3 because I don't want to pay for PSplus yet. I'm to busy with work to justify spending that much a year. Yes it is worth the value but I'm not sure how much I will get out of it to be honest.

Nothing about Destiny screamed next gen to me though, it just feels like Borderlands and Halo had a baby. Which is fine by me I haven't played a borderlands type shooter in a while so this will scratch that itch.

The Ps3 version looks great. I played both Ps4 and Ps3 versions betas.

Yeah it already is to me.

My definition of next-gen is a new generation of concepts.

Destiny is something that hasn't really been done before. Borderlands? Well I don't see Gearbox signing up for 10 years of continuous Borderlands story. Halo? Halo never had anything close to the expansive universe and co-op play that Destiny has.

Bungie had no choice but to develop this game for previous gens, as it's a new IP and they need to make their money back ASAP. Destiny 2 will be entirely next-gen focused, and will be leaps and bounds above what Destiny 1 is.

No. It won't. It's available on the last gen. How could it possibly have been made entirely for the next generation exclusively?

There isn't anything "next gen" about this next gen yet let alone games at all

I predict Destiny will out sell The Last of Us entire lifetime sales ... on day one. Why? Because it is one of the greatest games EVER!

Sales does not equal quality. The majority of people cannot appreciate a masterpiece when they see one.

Grand Theft Auto 5 has outsold Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time but which one is the better game in terms of quality? Most would say Ocarina of Time.

While Destiny will be a very fun and large game, I'm sorry to say but it won't hold a candle to The Last of Us.

I understand why people thing it's going to be "just another shooter" but is everyone forgetting about the creative ways Bungie are incorporating the online aspects to the game? Are we all forgetting that Bungie, who made the Halo series (up to Reach anyway) which are a great bunch of games. I think people are being to negative about it. Sure, there are plenty of FPS games about but that doesn't mean you should judge the game because of the gameplay. If Destiny was a 3rd people shooter instead of an FPS would everyone hold the same view about the game?

as soon as a game is a fps, a bunch of nutsacks are always quick to say "oh it's just another shooter", if you don't like shooters don't play them it's as simple as that

I'm not really sure who is calling it "just another shooter". I'm sure that can't be right. Generalizations like that are rarely correct. (Although there has been some truth to calling CoD's just another CoD.)

But I do think the article raises a good question about whether or not you could call Destiny "next gen". I believe that no, it probably isn't the best that we'll see on next gen. In fact, personally, if this game is supposed to live for 10 years, or whatever they're planning, I think it's a mistake to have made it for the old generation. I suspect that, while it probably will help initial sales, it will probably hurt that longevity by stretching it back to last gen.

Also I forgot to say, my idea of a next-gen gaming machine was pretty much the same kind of games, just much bigger levels, maps and longer single player campaigns. I believe the first game everyone will agree on being a next-gen will be MGSV The Phantom Pain, just because of the open world theme. It'll feel more like free roaming instead of a straight line.

nope because it will be held back by the Ps3/360. To me assassins creed unity, Dragon Age: Inquisition & Batman Arkham Knight next year will be all "Next-gen"

every game that's cross gen is imo not next gen,
for me a game is next gen when it is only possible on the next gen.

I think what defines next generation is not so much the graphics --- it's the experience. If this experience can be the same on an older generation then to me it's not next generation.

Destiny IS next gen due to its social aspects. The multiplayer is basically what does it. Prettier graphics and cleaner sound are natural evolutions within a lifecycle, larger sandboxes are natural evolutions within a lifecycle, but the way this game handles online multiplayer without being online per se, is something the PS3 and XB360 simply couldn't do. the tech and processing power just weren't there. Exceeding the abilities of the previous gen make it next gen.

Let me clear that up tho, the next gen part is moreso on Bungie's end. Obviously the game will perform moreorless the same on the PS3/XB360 but the tech had to move ahead to be able to handle it serverwise.

Stated elsewhere but worth repeating here - Gee; let's think on this. A game that REQUIRES an always online connection for play (pun intended) vs a game that does NOT. Seems like a no brainer to me.
