Bungie Expects Rushed Destiny Reviews

Just a short while back, we recommended that you not put too much stock in early Destiny reviews.

Now, Bungie is essentially saying the same thing, only they're wording it somewhat differently. As Bungie community manager David "Deej" Dague said in the latest Weekly Update, they expect to see day-one reviews from critics who haven't spent enough time with the game:

"We fully anticipate seeing day one reviews from folks who decide to kick the tires, but don’t have the time or patience to take our ride for a nice, long road trip. Some of you might wait to pick up a copy until you read the final verdict from your most trusted review house. We’re okay with that. We’ve created something we’re proud of."

Dague added that Destiny "really begins" once you hit the level cap of 20, because then you can keep improving your Guardian by locating better gear and taking on the exceedingly difficult end-game raids. Bungie has already made it clear that if you wish to complete these missions, you'll need to team up with equally powerful friends.

Of course, with an ongoing shared-world experience, one that will supposedly receive plenty of support for many years to come, one just accepts that what we see right out of the gate isn't the whole story. That's only logical.

It seems like that a reasonable assumption. And lets not forget the fame seekers who bash the game in their reviews.

Logic is not something that I believe exists anymore.

Too many stupid people in the world. Gaming media is no exception to that.

I think it's the same as it's always been, but the internet gives everyone a forum through which to be heard.

Any site that does a day 1 review will lose a lot of credibility with me. For a game like this I think you need to sink in a minimum of 20hrs to really start to form a good opinion.

I'm getting it no matter what but it'll be interesting to see how these early reviews stack up with ones published a week or two later score wise.

Activision should have just given copies to certain major websites who they feel wouldn't leak info early and kicked the servers up this weekend instead of waiting till tomorrow to turn them on. Now they will likely be receiving exactly what they feared poor reviews because of the very way they tried to prevent them.

If you withhold people from reviewing till the very last minute many are still going to try and get their reviews out at launch to simply be one of the first and gain site traffic.

Major sites didn't even get their press copies until Friday and Saturday. =\

I think a day one review would be OK some of the critics probably had the game for a week or so now

The servers for the game don't come on for another few hours, so nobody outside of bungie can play yet.

Even though the reviews will likely be rushed, I think a lot of the reviewers will fall into the hype and give the game high ratings.

Not saying it will be a bad game by any means (it very likely won't be bad), but I am expecting mid-high to high scores for the game.

An hour one review could be pretty funny.

This is sort of the way it is will all MMO's. A lot of sites will even do 6-month later reviews.

What's the idea behind the level 20 cap? I fully expect to see many hardcore folks hit level 20 by the weekend, so then what?

That's the whole point bungie wants you to hit level 20 as quickly as possible because all the major content is for level 20+.

The max level is actually 30 but the game has a soft-cap of 20 with the last 10 levels being gained through a special attribute called light.

While this isn't an MMO it still shares many features so I will say MOST MMOs are like this the first week an MMO is out is a mad rush to max level for the hardcore players because max level is where all the fun content is at.

Also not only can you hit level 30 with Light Destiny is also all about horizontal progression with skills being unlocked from left to right even after max level. Plus every weapon uncommon and above also has skills that need to be leveled.
