Will PlayStation Ever Be More Popular Than Xbox In The US?

The PS2 trounced the competition. Nothing, including the Xbox, was even close. Sony's second console eventually became the best-selling video game system in history at over 150 million units sold worldwide.

But are those days gone for good? The PlayStation 3 has finally outstripped the Xbox 360 in terms of global sales count, but that's thanks mostly to Japanese and European sales. Microsoft's console definitely rules in this country; there may be no chance the PS3 can catch it. Although it might if sales continue to rise even after the PS4 is announced. Anyway, looking ahead, could the PS4 be a bigger seller in the US than the Xbox 720 (or whatever it'll be called)...?

These days, it's difficult to envision. Not only does Microsoft appear to have the casual gamer in its back pocket, there also seems to be much better advertising for Xbox products in this country. Sony has come on as of late, promoting various exclusives relatively well, but nowhere near as effectively - or as frequently - as Microsoft. Furthermore, as the Xbox has always specialized in Western-oriented software (and sadly, most people in this country don't care much about JRPGs anymore), it seems less and less likely that PlayStation will ever dominate in the US again.

But who knows? Crazier things have happened...

If Sony dominates the Global market, will they really care if they have a rough fight in the US market? Quite apart from anything else, the profit margins in this market are abysmal.

I'm sure that they'd like to lead in the US, but I bet they'd trade leading in the US for leading Globally.

Good point. Sony is a global business as are its competitors in the console gaming market. It makes little difference if one leads by a slight margin in one territory when the other leads substantially worldwide.

I honestly believe the first "good" console to hit will always be on top for a while. If they really do have as close of release dates as rumored, I'm going to have to say Sony Will come out on top regardless.

The only reason most people I know even got the Xbox 360 is because it came out first or because their friends had it. With the PS4 being out by the end of this year, unless the new Xbox somehow manages to come out a few months earlier, I don't see it being the primary choice anymore.

I think they can, but they've got their work cut out for them. Once upon a time, people referred to playing video games as "playing Nintendo". Then it became "playing Playstation". In the here and now it's Xbox. It's a matter of changing mind sets, which is not easy to do.

I was an excellent strategy on the part on MS. Smoke, mirrors, supposed questionably acquired technology and a full year head start coupled with an onslaught of media that captured the mindshare of the gaming industry. I am simply astounded how this was accomplished. Considering that you had a one in 3 chance of having a DEAD BOX.

You're jumping to conclusions that you won't be able to play them on the PS4 at all. You just can't play them "natively". That does not mean you will not be able to at all.

It is a KNOWN FACT that SONY will FORCE you to buy PS3 games for the PS4. Whether you want them or not. Sony staff will actually come to your house and break your fingers if you do not submit.

They considered putting a PS3 console into the PS4 but it wouldn't fit. I suppose you can just glue them together. Problem solved.

Seriously though, PS4 is not even fully announced. Things can and will change. If you have a PS3 hold on to it. If you trade it in them expect to repurchase games. Sony is NOT REQUIRED to provide backwards compatibility. It is actually a perk.Believe it or not.

There is this feeling inside of me that the tables might be turned this time around. It's too early to make any rational assumptions yet, we need to get to know the next Xbox first, but I am very optimistic.

I am willing to bet that during the first, say, three years the PS4 will take the position the X360 had during that same timeframe, with the Xbox fighting to regain market shares.

I think Sony being first on the ball makes a huge difference, but also the launch itself seem to have gone remarkably well.

On one hand Madea's hijinks and "fish out of water" back story will supply you with one maybe two laughs
whereas
Batman won't provide the comic relief from watching some of Madea's antics but is hands down the better of the two movies.

That's more so a preference or taste in games. Not a true comparison. I have all the games you mentioned on both consoles. That's like comparing CoD to God of War. Two different genres. If you are talking about playability and likeability then that's a personal opinion and not a comparison.

I'd think you'd compare Heavy Rain with The Walking Dead. Halo to Resistance or Killzone.

I have some theories as to why Microsoft gained a huge market share this generation:
first console out
(mostly american) media bias against the ps3
dropped support for original xbox immediately (fans were more inclined to go next gen)
sony still concentrated efforts with ps2 (Ex GOW 2)
No major AAA games for ps3 launch after year headstart from 360
ps3's price
ps3's bad and also non existent advertising
gears of war debutted a little b4 ps3 launch
lazy developers berating Sony's proprietary Cell
ps3 debutted around the same damn time as the Wii
xbl community
many who got rrod bought new 360's (believe it or not I know guys who were on their "15th" 360!)

In all honesty these factors could and should have the 360 in a comfortable lead But the ps3 has edged the 360 out

As of now the ps4 has generally favorable reactions and acclaim. Honestly, i believe the new Microsoft console has to really show its worth. Based on the specs, exclusive games, open system and developer enthusiasm i think it will be a harder fight for Microsoft this gen

The only "factor" I have an issue with, and always have for that matter, is the "price too high" one.... Take a look at Blu-Ray players at the time, the one that came in my 60 gig PS3 was at the time one of the best, and it was less than HALF the cost of the closest competition, THAT right there made it worth it's money IMO, even if there wasn't much of a selection for BRs at the time, and it's still the only BR player I own... All the rest I totally agree with Clock.

Oh, forgot to mention that I too know someone who has bought a total of about 15 for him and his family, 3 of them going to nieces/nephews... He himself switched to PS3/Comp after his 5th personal 360 got the blue screen...

I don't think it ever will. The 360 just had the luck of being released when online gaming on consoles became HUGE, and Sony at the time was messing up big time. I can't imagine all those kids who are on x-box live turning their backs on it now. It's more than just the console now, it's the experiences they had on x-box live with their friends.

Yea that's also true. I've spoken to a couple of xbox fanatics (my cousin included) and i get the same reaction. They say if they do get a next gen console it'll only be the xbox. They're not interested in the hardware, exclusives etc. My cousin was telling me this while setting up his new 360 slim he bought to replace a malfunctioned 360!

Honestly I doubt they will, it seems the majority of American's are technically illiterate especially in the case of gaming hardware. I don't see it improving any time soon either, the mass public that is choosing to pick up a gaming console tend to just get whatever the see the most on tv which we all know will be a microsoft product.

they better not ship such a shoddy product this time - the rrod frequency should have killed off the 360 early on - I guess when you have invested in games etc its hard to switch over.

I'm not sure about the 360 leading with online play - yes they (me too) have Halo - but the COD numbers for the PS3 are not to far behind the 360 and Battlefield is about even.

Im thinking cost is a big reason the xbox suceeded - the 360 hid its real cost very well - ironic considering by the time you buy the wireless adapter, rechargeable batteries for the controller and a gold membership - it turned out more expensive than the PS3.

The new Xbox is rumoured to have less juice than the PS4 and is to be more of a media box. My big concern is that Microsoft will put pressure on multiplatform developers to ensure games developed for the PS4 are no better than the weaker 720.

Probably not. Sony has it tough convincing a group of 08-25 American male video gamers who get raging hard-ons over being able to talk trash with other horny, hungry teenage boys who love to talk the talk but wouldn't have the guts to walk the walk. Sony's ads were pretty weak but so were Microsoft's. Other than the GoW ad from 2006, most of MS's commercials were lame and condescending; which was enough to get pathetic 13 year-olds hard for some reason. I can't believe American teenage boys actually get erections over overpriced, shoddy hardware and proprietary add-ons.

Then, they go to the websites where people of ambiguous sexuality like Mitch Dyer who call themselves "journalists" lie to the American idiots who believe the paid-off BS coming out of their keyboards as gospel.

Microsoft's success is from siphoning money from dumb Americans with peer pressure issues who think being able to talk trash with other losers who are giving video gaming a bad name is cool. I have no clue why teenage boys get erections over this. So despite the shoddy hardware, being forced to buy proprietary peripherals and being forced to pay for online play, that's enough to choose MS? To talk to other horny teenage boys who badly want to bone the likes of Nicki Minaj and Megan Fox? Unbelievable.

This is why video gaming is doomed.

As I said, Sony needs to take the gloves off and attack these idiots with advertisements telling them how they wasted their money and how stupid they are for being swindled. Too bad in the dumbest and most idiotic country in the world, the U.S.A., that's easier said than done.

I'm not from the US. But I have been all over it. Detroit is pretty unlike most of the US. Actually, if you ask me, each area of the US seems to have it's own sub-culture that is unlike the rest of the country.

Some areas are pretty fantastic, while others are not fantastic at all... Kind of like... every other country has fantastic areas while others are not fantastic at all. :p

Nope, not even close. Sony misread the market by asking $600 dollars for a PS3. Only to have microsoft undercut them by $200 for a xbox 360.

The Cell processor the Ps3 used was hit or miss on many muli platform titles.

Microsoft already had a generation to work out the bugs of their online gaming service Xbox live. Call of Duty and Madden NFL were better on xbox live.

Microsoft customer service worked better than Sony's to replace consoles under warranty.

Microsoft is willing to spend money on exclusivity.

This Generation is different. Sony has learned from their mistakes. Sony and Microsoft are pretty much on a even footing.

My XBOX only friends couldn't afford the hefty price of the PS3.

For awhile I knew only 2 other people besides myself who was enjoying Blu-ray movies on the brand new playstation console.
Most people I know didn't own one until after the price dropped in half.

I think Sony was wrong, but I think they weren't unfounded. They'd existed over 30 years already in technology by charging more for tech than everyone else, but they were always a degree better, too. Their company vision allowed them to succeed in technology with higher prices than competition, because typically speaking, whether it was a tv, cam-corder, walkman, vaio, or anything else, you knew you were getting top line stuff.

The gaming industry at the point in time when this gen started was an exception to a well proven rule. So while I acknowledge they made a mistake, it isn't hard to see why they did. The PS3's engineering truly was of higher quality. But unlike every other tech division of Sony's, this one relies on third party support.

Sony has the pieces in place to dominate the next gen. It all comes down to games and marketing. Also, it will be interesting to see if Microsoft shoots themselves in the foot by not allowing used games.

honestly, right now it's call of duty and halo that probably keeps xbox where it is in America. Those are probably going to wane soon (at least I really really hope so). So sony needs the next big online multiplayer experience. whether its a shooter or something else. Probably a shooter, but you never know. maybe if they really start pushing dust 514. Killzone 3 kept me online for months which is really impressive, but obviously, it wasn't the one. I don't know, we'll see

It's not out of the question since PlayStation did dominate over here for two gens in a row. The easiest way for Sony to take back the North American market is to just pay to get Call of Duty DLC first in the next-gen. Whatever gets the brand back on top is fine with me because it's highly unlikely the next Xbox will be as much of a powerhouse as the PS4 is and I'd rather developers focus efforts on the system with the best hardware.

If the next XBox loses the better multi-platform crown (and going by the leaked specs, they just might) they're going to lose a lot of customers who bought the console because it had the best version of a majority of big multi-platform games. Perhaps the year head start had more meaning in North America as well...

Not to mention MS seems to be focused on things other than games. The new generation means a fresh start, it's going to be interesting to see how much brand loyalty means and how much attachment there is to peoples' XBL/PSN names.
