Sony Won't Confirm PS4, Says PS3 Is In A "Great Period"

Here, we'll translate Sony's detailed response for you: "Not so fast, sparky."

Over the weekend, one source made a very big splash by saying that both Microsoft and Sony would unveil their new consoles at E3 2012.

But Sony boss Andrew House just told CVG that the company is "just entering into this great period for PS3" (which we don't deny), and furthermore:

"I don't think we're contemplating talking about anything to do with future console iterations at this point."

House pointed out that Sony managed to ensure profitability for their publishing partners with the PS2, by giving it a much longer life cycle than competing platforms. And it seems clear they want to do the same with the PS3. After all, many analysts will tell you the PS3 hasn't hit the "sweet spot" in terms of price just yet; that sweet spot has historically been around $200. The PS2 went wild at that price.

He also said that for the time being, physical media is "still the easiest consumer experience," although there are plenty of opportunities to explore other models in the future. Said House:

"Some of our group companies already have a stake in free-to-play models and so on. But in my view, for the very highest quality high-definition console gaming, I think there are still some significant barriers to streaming solutions.

Whether it's in mobile or cloud-based services, there are opportunities there for more casual content and in our case potentially for legacy content, which we would definitely like to explore. But I think we are a way away from being able to deliver the full-on top-end experience like that."

Now, he didn't officially say Sony wouldn't show the PS4 at E3, so there's still hope. At the same time, if the results of our recent poll are any indication, gamers won't mind in the least if the PS4 waits a while.

Ps3 may not have quite yet hit the sweet spot in terms of price, but I think in terms of software quality, we're nearly there. God of war 3, uncharted 2 & 3, arkham city, skyrim, resistance 3, kill zone 3, infamous 2 among others. Personally I think this has been the best year for ps3 yet. There was a barrage of amazing content. So why spoil the ride? People seem to be obsessed with new hardware but they forget what that means... A huge new investment to replace a console which is yet to be outdated. Also, Sony has proven that the processing power of ps3 trumps 360 so letting their launch of the infinite/720/whatever would be more like letting them catch up to the current generation than speed into the next. Ps3 is doing great, why spoil the fun by taking attention off of it when it's in it's prime?

No biggie as i'd rather keep my PS3 for now and save money to buy more great games than spend a good few hundred pounds on a new console, having said that i'd be happy to buy a PS4 when it does come but i'd rather see it later than sooner.

Come on, Ben. When will you stop with the rumourmongering?

There has been no evidence of a new PS console, so what continues to convince you that one is coming now? SONY keeps on telling the media that they don't want one now, the devs say they don't want one and the gamers don't really need one, but, despite your own suggestion of not have the $200 / console sales yet, you keep on pumping your fanbase with rumours. I just don't get it.

Until there is real evidence of necessary new hardware, new media formats or a real breakthrough in CPU and graphics chips that makes a new console more likely, give it a rest because this is doing nothing for PSX's credibility.

What do you expect from internet "journalism". There's too many "sources" and "analysts" (GTA V is going to be a huge blockbuster?! Who would've thought it?) who we're somehow supposed to trust more than the average person.

The problem is that people pay attention to them and give them hits and start hype over what they say. I'm not necessarily talking about PSX since they're better than the average site.

Sure...they can stay with the PS3 for however long they want but theyl miss the boat.

Nintendo already has its new console and the hardware is superior to both the PS3 and the XBOX 360 and that will show in games.

Now if Microsoft also come out with a new console Sony will have to try and play catch up and we all know how it hurt them this gen and took them a while to overcome.

Now they should consider moving on or they can try competing with the new Nintendo and maybe also the new xbox with their inferior last gen hardware....

So hope they come out with a PS4 soon otherwise theyl fall flat on their face. And a PS4 wont mean the death of the PS3, look at the PS2 and how well it did after the PS3 came out.

So wake up and get on the next gen before its too late SONY !!!!

I want the Holodeck already, ...from Star Trek. THAT's next gen gaming. But my PS3 will do fine 'till then.
