Destiny Rakes In $325 Million, Over 100 Million Hours Logged

It's not really surprising, is it?

Activision Publishing has announced that the hugely anticipated Destiny has earned $325 million in its first five days at market. This according to Chart-Track, first-party retail customer sell-through info, and Activision Blizzard internal estimates.

Developer Bungie adds that players have logged over 100 million hours of online play thus far, and they've participated in 137 million activities. On top of which, the critical acclaim is significant, as it has received over 180 awards and nominations to date. We're guessing they're referring to pre-release awards, but whatever.

Said Activision Publisher CEO Eric Hirshberg:

"Destiny fans played more than 100 million hours of the game in the first week. That's on par with the engagement levels of our most popular Call of DutyŽ games, which obviously is an industry leader. Millions of gamers are having a great time playing Destiny and can't put down their controllers. And this is just the beginning. Destiny is a platform that will grow and evolve and we will continue to work closely with our partners at Bungie to bring a long line of new experiences and content to life in the game."

Destiny got its first update this week, too, as Bungie improved the game's stability and doubled the chance of encountering a public event while exploring. Many more updates to come, including the first official expansion, currently set for December.

It actually already has. The amount sold to retailers was $500 million at launch. $365 is the sold-through number.

Activision clarified in a recent interview that the $500 million included all aspects of the game. The marketing. The packaging and shipping, the lavish website and apps, the game development etc.
It's likely the game alone costed far less to create.

Why are a majority of the commercials for the game live action segments? I've never understood game commercials that show little to no actual gameplay.

There's only one live action commercial and if you really wanted to see gameplay it's all over Youtube and EVERY game site on the planet. Stop hating on something you don't own simply because you want to be cool...because you're not.

I don't think he was hating.... He simply brought up a very valid question. Live action and CGI trailers can be annoying seeing as they show nothing of the actual game and CGI trailers especially can be VERY misleading.

Also I am pretty sure like Harerazer said Destiny only has one Live Action trailer.

Harerazer,

Butthurt much?

There are multiple live action commercials for the game. What made me bring it up was seeing the 2nd one last night prior to making the post. The first live action commercial involves a person flipping over a huge monster while setting a grenade at the base of the monster. The other live action commercial involved 3 people running at an army of enemies while listening to "Immigrant Song" by LZ.

These commercials are part of a complete 2+ minute video that you can see in full on Youtube.

Anyways I wasn't even hating on the game. I was hating on live action commercials used to advertise videogames. So if I'm hating on anything it would be the marketing teams.

Harerazer you're the wrong kind of stupid.

I'm ready to score it.
*drum rolls desk with hands*
Verdict: 7.0
I might write a quick user review explaining why.

I'm still going through the missions, and the game is still fun as heck.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. This game is 10x better when played co-op multiplayer (like Borderlands). If played solo, it can get a bit boring, hence probably why the low scores.

Co op or not the content is still the same. While yes it is more fun with friends, nothing changes except having someone to talk to and help manipulate the battlefield. So the scores wouldn't deviate much and shouldn't at all.

I agree though it is a game that begs to be played with friends to keep it interesting.
