Assassin's Creed IV Is "The Most Diverse And Seamless" Entry Yet

The year's second-worst kept secret so far (the worst had to be the PS4's announcement at the PlayStation Meeting) has become official.

Ubisoft has revealed Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, the next entry in the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise. As rumored, we get a brand new hero and a brand new setting, along with "the most diverse and seamless Assassin's Creed world ever created." It will release for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii U, PlayStation 4, "and other next generation consoles." However, only a release date for the PS3, 360 and Wii U versions was announced: October 29, 2013.

Although many gamers have expressed displeasure with the "annualization" of this series, it's important to note that this game has been in development for nearly two years. Multiple Ubisoft studios (Montreal, Annecy, Bucharest, Kiev, Quebec, Singapore and Sofia) have been involved in this project's production. And here's an encouraging part of the press release; a statement by Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot:

"With the new hero and new setting we are creating the boldest and most unique Assassin’s Creed game yet, while still respecting the pillars of the franchise that have made it such a fan favorite. Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag is based on a true, harsh and exciting part of a legendary era and will thrill longtime fans and newcomers alike.”

The new adventure features Edward Kenway, a British man with a definite thirst for danger. He starts off privateering for the Royal Navy but ends up embracing piracy, and then finds himself involved in the ancient war between the Assassins and Templars. The setting is the dawn of the 18th century and other characters include "some of the most infamous pirates in history, such as Blackbeard and Charles Vane." Players will travel through the West Indies during what has become known as the Golden Age of Pirates. And everyone thinks pirates are awesome, right?

There will be over 50 navigable locations, combat features weaponry from the era in question, and the gameplay will reward "both daring and stealth." Plus, the new multiplayer experience "is more varied and ruthless than ever." If you purchase the game for either the PS3 or PS4, you can download 60 minutes of additional gameplay via the PSN after the game arrives and lastly, pre-ordering at GameStop nets you a Limited Edition collectible poster featuring artwork by award-winning artist Todd McFarlane.

It seems like a really interesting game, I loved the look of the ship parts of AC3 which I saw, but I am just so far behind on this series now, I haven't even started Brotherhood o_0 and with many other games I a prioritizing to play this series just gets pushed back further and further and with the yearly releases catching up just seems very daunting.

I'll be interested to see the direct difference between the PS3 and PS4 versions though.

You have to start some where! :) I really think this would be one of those regrets if you didn't play them. I beat AC and ACII and loved them. I then skipped Brotherhood and Revelations and went right into ACIIIL and enjoyed it immensely. I will get into ACIII during the slow months as I own it now. ACIV on the PS4 is going to be Unreal!

You missed out on the best AC game;Brotherhood.
I felt ill when i realised i could'nt beat the crap out of whoever i liked in AC3.
Sneaking up on rooftop guards and giving them a friendly headbutt before hurling them to their deaths was one off my favourite AC pastimes,AC3 combat system was terribly plain,they should change it back for AC4.
Anyway end rant.

This is gonna be a pain in the wallet.. 2 great games on October. Beyond: Two Souls and this new assassin creed game. Well, I'll still be buying these 2 games on their first day release.. ^_^

So as I mentioned yesterday it looks great. And yes it looks like its running on newer hardware. Im really looking forward to this one.

If it is releasing on the PS4, I will be waiting to purchase it for that rather than the PS3. Unless of course ee are talking 6 months of waiting, because I need a pirate fix.

On that screenshot that Ubi accidentally put up on their website, it said "also coming to next-gen consoles October 29th".

And the new trailers up on IGN end showing what is likely the cover art and the platforms that it is confimed on. PS4 is listed right after PS3, so I would like to hope that it's pretty well confirmed.

Oh its been in developement for 2 years? Alright then im hyped. I thought its been in the making since the release of AC3. The fact its had plenty of time means it has much potential to be good. It may sound weird, but im looking foward to the MP more than anything else in this. Imagine epic ship vs ship battles and you can board the enemy vessels.

Ubi have said that they have 2 different teams working on AC games.

That is the only way they could be pumping out quality titles each year (except Revelations).

I just finished AC3 and I gotta say the ending was lacking... :/

I'm really stoked about AC4:BF 'cause the naval battles were my favorite part of AC3 and having a game FEATURE them, it could top my favorite AC list kicking out AC Brotherhood... although Ezio is just BADASS in every aspect of the word... maybe if they were to strike a deal with Disney and/or Johnny Depp to make a Jack Sparrow lookalike... yeah I'll keep on dreaming.

And I started the multiplayer and I'll say, it's really well done! Only thing I don't like is that I have to unlock abilities and then buy them... why not unlock them and get over it??? :/

Wow, they seem to have a way of keeping AC fresh. The trailer looked like Pirates of the Caribbean! I am a huge fan of the movies so I will eat this up. What is even better is that it will be available on the PS4!! I am waiting for the announcement of the ACIV Vita game. ACIIIL did good in sales so I would expect them to make another Vita title. At least I am praying they will. Like I said, if they can keep it fresh and fun then I don't have a problem with an annual release.

I got the Platinum for ACIIIL but only started ACIII. It's hard for me to play one type of game for to long. I will get into it during the slow months. Tomb Raider tomorrow!!

You know...thats what they said about AC3. Seen friends play it and it just seems ok. Revelation was also in that category (felt dull as I continued playing). Now AC2 and Brotherhood on the other hand were amazing! I'll just continue waiting until price drop.

I have not played AC3 and will wait, maybe, for when its in the cheap bins or possible with all the dlc on disc. As for AC4... well I think AC and AC2 and its add-ons spoiled me. I would rather visit the orient or somewhere with rich culture and history for this genre of game. I have had enough of Pirate game or movie. And I understand the series has "Evolved" from its original roots. But I like the classics. :)

That said... I hope it appeals to the die-hard fans, of which I use to be, and have moved on to other games and AWAITING for the new ones.

While I know it'll be well produced, the whole pirate gig is something of a turn off, and leaves me feeling pretty meh. Meh in part because these games just keep getting ubisoft's creative talent and marketing spotlight over something fresh, and meh because of arrrr matey, lets go plunder and find secret treasure!

But hey, pirates sell and so does AC. Its a safe investment that keeps ubisoft's teams employeed, multiple studios even. ....now if they can just do something about its combat

The naval sections of AC3 was one of the coolest things for me, I really wanted them to flesh it out a bit more.... lol thanks Ubi for stealing my money for a 5th year in a row.

Aye, matey. Really. It's not a deal breaker of course but its not exactly lucrative to my interests. AC3 on the other hand was more engaging than it otherwise would've been because I thought the setting and history was cool.

But I sort of miss Ezio. He was like an old school Batman of sorts. All kinds of gadgets and abilities and such.

I mean, sure, it may very well end up being a good game in itself. But somewhere along the way they seem to have lost the elegance of the first games.

I own the entire series with the exception of Brotherhood (bought i for my bro but played it) and the PSVita installment. I have never beat any of the games and always lose interest. Even AC3, which I barely even got into. The games just lack something in is gameplay and combat design that needs to be improved. This annual release of the series is tiresome as well.

Yeah, your right about that I guess. Now that I think of it, I honestly found myself sitting there at one point, wondering why I bought Revelations. It has been the low point of the series, I was feeling tired of AC after that, but then bam there they go hooking me right back into it with ACIII, and now I can't wait to pilage and plunder.

Defs getting it on PS4 too, hopefully it looks better.

I bought them at a cheaper price except for AC3, but never really got into any of them besides Revelations which I never finished. I never actually liked the combat or climbing mechanics, but I like the theme and open world. I found nothing about the game to be innovative as it is just a blend of other franchises like Splinter Cell, GTA and Prince of Persia.
