Final Fantasy XV TGS 2014 Trailer: Ooh, Pretty Pictures

It was originally called Final Fantasy Versus XIII but eight years have passed since then.

Now, it's Final Fantasy XV and it's coming out...well, whenever. It's scheduled for next-gen consoles and gamers will be treated to this fresh gameplay trailer at the Tokyo Game Show.

The first official trailer debuted at TGS 2006, if I remember correctly, so it's interesting to see how far it has come. It still just looks like an action game with hit points, but at least it's an attractive game. Besides, if Square Enix embraces other role-playing elements in full and doesn't skimp on the depth (as opposed to the disappointing mess that was Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII), it could be downright epic.

You never know.

Towards the end of the trailer, say the last 5-10 seconds, did anyone hear a hint of the older FFs in the melody during that part of the video?

Perhaps I'm explaining it poorly, but I was reminded of the older FFs when the song was trailing off in the last big of the trailer.

Yeah well we knew there'd be no sign of a battle system and I did love DMC's style.

@Victor it wouldn't surprise me (my speakers were down) they do redo the same melodies over and over in incredibly diverse ways to give it the same feel.

I enjoy DMC's gameplay. But not in a FF game...

Final Fantasy always has a great OST. I happen to love XIII's more than XII and X. Oh my!

It's interesting you note that, in the previous gameplay trailers there was a menu like in Kingdom Hearts, I don't see that hear.. Maybe they've tried to go one step further than Lighting Returns and apply attacks to the face buttons... even so, that won't ruin the core experience for me as it seems this game has a real sense of adventure, I cant wait to explore the world in my flashy car :D

I'm thinking less DMC and more Witcher. But with more sterile and ordinary wide open areas where they've dumped a "landmark" FF item, like a giant crystal or something.

and for a car that's obviously been doing a lot of travel they've either stopped at every car wash along the way or the devs figured there's no such thing as dust and bugs this world.

Around parts of my university campus, I would see long patches of grass layed over the dirt after construction or renovation around a particular building.

No I got the Zodiac spear first playthrough, there is a way to do it with stealthing your way through the high level zones. You need a guide to do it right though and it makes the game really easy. Also I had deathbringer swords on my other 2 characters and they hit like trucks.

Most enemies I could be using berserk on 2 of them and having vaan sit back and heal them. I beat all the bosses this way and the hunts, although I definitely couldn't leave the room for the hidden bosses.

@ Banky,

Yeah, there is a way to do it on first playthrough and fairly early at that. Unfairly early, which is what I did. I can't remember the exact details, but it entailed making my characters not auto-engage enemies and RUNNING LIKE HELL in and out of the area. If you were too slow or turned the wrong corner, it was a one-hit-kill death for you!

I remember it being quite the adrenaline rush hearing a mob of insanely powerful enemies chasing me!

The voiceover sounded remarkably cheesy, like audio from a soap opera, but the visuals looked decent indeed, and some very cool moves/attacks.

But overall I do get the feeling this game will not have the depth I prefer in my RPGs. First impression is very shallow.

Japanese voice overs always sound like that. It's no indication of the English version, mostly ever. So I don't really care about that.

As for depth, I don't really know why you are looking for any type of depth in that video. It didn't really show much, at all. For me, it just looked pretty.

It did look pretty.
But it was gameplay and the action scenes looked very hack'n'slash action'y and that's that... If the game is a lot more than what was shown there, this really is a bad trailer for the game.

Either show nothing but CGI, or show representative clips - something I suspect indeed is done here. At least that's what I am afraid of.

If it's like Kingdom Hearts, like they say it is, there should be plenty of skills and magic, etc. There should also be a lot of opportunity if they have 4 party memebers.

I still can't possibly believe an action game could have as much depth as the franchise is typically known for. I also reject the idea that most western rpgs have any real depth to battle. All the real time games are hack and slash or shoot-em-up at their core. Personally, I think games like Dragon Age 2 (the only one I played) and Mass Effect have fake depth. It's basically the same throughout. But I wouldn't expect anything too different from that type of thing.

It also doesn't help that I can't read Japanese and have no idea what they were doing on the menus, if anything.

Here's some gameplay...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udgrmaQXtRk#t=152

It looks like there's a menu in the lower left, but they either don't use anything but attack combos or it's just a HUD interface that does nothing. Can't tell.

But even this vid makes it look like a hack n' slash. I sincerely hope it isn't. The franchise used to have so much depth and uniqueness from one game to the next. It would be sad to see it diminish into something that's merely flashy.

I suspect there's more flash than substance at play here. But on behalf of all you FF fans I obviously hope I am wrong.

As for substance in western RPGs, I kinda understand what you are saying, although what's typical for western RPGs is that you got a *choice* in how you want to play the game, and therein lies the depth for me. Like Fallout, you really got a very wide range of options in how you want to build your character. I'd call that depth. Depending on your character the gameplay can really be a mixture of stealth, traps, the environment and weaponry.

Dragon Age 2 were definitely hack'n'slash. It had a sweet pinch of something extra, imo, but definitely safe on the action side of things. DA1 were a lot better in this respect.

But the Witcher games are safely rooted on the other side of the spectrum with quite deep battle mechanics. It's both timing, spells, traps, ranged, specials, combos & the lot.

If you don't love the setting in Fallout - and I do mean *love* - I honestly see no reason to play those games. Personally I am amazed that Fallout is as big as it is. In my eyes it's really is quite the niche product in that it really totally depends on the player getting involved in the depicted world for it to shine. Without that it's just a rather poorly animated, glitchy, empty, unjointed area of space to stumble around in.

So yeah - I don't really get this series success. I'm just happy it enjoys such attention, because that means there will be more to come of us fans. :)

I like that square is giving the combat some weight in it's movement, and that it isn't exactly pretty fighting. It looks a little sloppy; almost drunken. I like it. I hope that the magic system is substantial. I want spells with effects that mean something.

I think this game might be a step in the right direction. I just hope the plot isn't over convoluted with too much over dramatic crap that doesn't actually matter.

Oh Final Fantasy.... I just cannot be angry at you for long... What a brilliant trailer! It really just sets up for what an amazing adventure this is going to be. I love how they use the car as the method of transport applying an almost road trip quality to the game. I also get the impression it will resonate with the film 'Chronicle' Where you have teenager which gains super powers and the film explores them experimenting the impact of these powers. I feel that this game will start of in a realistic fashion but as you progress the fantasy elements will slip in further and further. Just seeing the boys reaction to all the wild things in that trailer was fantastic, I need characters which are full of life and it really seems like this game will deliver.

On a side note, I am sure most of you know that with the PS4 version of Type-0 there will be a demo for this game, so in March 2015 we will finally be able to play this mirage. My question is ' Is there a physical copy of Final Fantasy Type-0 or is it download only?' I really want a boxed copy of the game.

That looks incredible. I wish it were a more extended look at the battle system, though. I don't really get why you folks are comparing it to DMC, though. It doesn't have anywhere near the speed or slickness. Judging by what I just saw, if I were to compare it to anything, it would be Demon's Souls. Not in terms of difficulty, of course, but in the way that you have to measure your attacks and watch your timing, as well as in the animations. That being said, there also seems to be more fluidity than in Souls, especially with Noctis' teleportation ability, which just looks mad fun. I am definitely looking forward to this one. :)

Everyone criticizing the combat remember this game was supposed to be a spin off and the original director is the creator of kingdom hearts.

So it is safe to say that it is going to be closer to Kingdom Hearts in combat than a traditional final fantasy.

Kingdom Hearts you could button mash on easy and normal but once you start playing on the harder modes or attempting to beat sephiroth in the arena you would realize that there is a lot of depth and strategy to the combat.

I really liked how much fluid movement all the characters exuded. The way noctis slid passed enemies while fighting was awesome. I hope they can make the combat responsive while keeping this amazing level of fluid movement in the game.

Anyway I bought a PS3 for this game and then a PS4 so I hope it comes out soon I really want to explore this games world.

I'm telling you what it was supposed to be, and everyone who has been following this game knows that it was originally Final Fantasy versus 13.

While it is a main entry in the series and should be judged as one, potentially docking it marks because its not turn based would be silly. No Ben I'm not saying that you would do that I'm saying if any reviewers did that or fans that would be kind of silly.

Look at FF13, it was a weird turn based hybrid and was in my opinion trash, and lacked everything that makes final fantasy feel like a final fantasy.

On the flip side if this game has all the stuff that I know used to come with final fantasy examples being, side quests, lots of secrets, ultimate weapon quests, hidden bosses, a huge world to explore non linearly at some point, mini games, etc but has combat closer to Kingdom hearts I would much rather have that game than FF13 or even a game that had say the combat of FF10 but lacked everything that FF13 did ya know?

Anyway my point was that a lot of people think they changed the combat for FF14 when thats not really true because this was supposed to be a spin off and I mean they aren't obligated to recode the whole combat system because some fans are attached to turn based combat. I love me some turn based combat, but I don't think Final Fantasy needs it. I loved FF12 and it wasn't turn based, also Crisis core but that was a spin off.

@LV what sort of stuff do you expect?

EDIT

Also for people saying this game has too realistic of an art style and world....I don't think they realize that FF7 if remade would look a lot like this. FF7 had cars, motocycles, pretty normal looking cities etc.

In fact the art style and colour pallete of a this game is similar to Final Fantasy Advent children which is probably close to what a remake of FF7 would look like, so that kind of proves my point.

Anyway I think this game looks dope, I'm super excited about it.

-Towns
-World to Explore
-Hidden Bosses
-Magic
-Complex, interesting battle system
-Engaging story
-Epic OST
-Moogles, I must have moogles.
-A main character that isn't Squall.

Your last comment gives me hope. It's just hard to keep the faith after all these years and so many delays. I've been loving XIV and we both know I'll get this game on Day1. But the trailer (at least to me) looked like a road trip by 4 "bros" on the way to a one direction concert.

I hate squall with a burning passion, I like to pretend he never happened.

I am skeptical like everyone here, its been delayed for a long time, it jumped consoles, and we don't know a lot about it.

I'm hoping all of those things lead to an unhyped launch of a game that gives us all the things we want from a final fantasy game and that it exceeds any expectations we have had.

When it launches we can hold hands while we boot up the game.

Really enjoyed this trailer! The visuals looked impressive (as expected) and the combat looked pretty interesting as well.
Not as fast-paced as Kingdom Hearts' from the look of it, but I can definitely appreciate the animations of the characters while fighting as well!

On another note, I don't really understand people comparing this game to DMC.....nothing alike.
DMC is a LOT faster, more combo-focused and all about quick reactions.
DMC is a hack n' slash at its finest and FF XV is also action-orientated, but that's where the similarities end.

Agreed! I think the DMC comparisons are...well, way off, to say the least.

I see a solo character lunging at an enemy with acrobatic moves while using a sword twice his size I think of DMC, not FF.

If that same move was initiated by me selecting an attack/spell from a menu than I'll gladly embrace it as a FF title.

I have to agree, i just don't agree with it being DMC. This game takes too much effort to make it look 'realistic' with their movements. Turning, dodging, it's much slower and sluggish than DMC. I think the person mentioning the Witcher seems like a much more comparable option.

Some say... that Sephiroth's sword is as long as his schlong. Which explains why he's always keen on a

Sword Fight

with Cloud.

I did but I'm not entirely sure what you mean by it :P

I mean the big sword was swung in the trailer with incredible weight it looked hard to move which I thought was tight, and not really DMC like.

What about turn based combat makes massive swords more acceptable?

This is AMAZING!!!!!!!! My favorite part that they sneak into the trailer is at the end when the main character says, "It's been a long time coming. Almost there." YES THE FUCK IT HAS!!!! It's been 8 years since they announced this and finally theyre gonna release it soon! I cant wait!!! Considering the scope and style of the game as well as how modern it is, i think it fits that its an Action RPG. As long as the gameplay is solid and the story blows me away, im perfectly fine with that! Don't dissappoint me SE! PLEASE DONT!
