Ubisoft Compares Watch Dogs To Assassin's Creed Debut

Some called it the biggest disappointment of 2014. Others say it was a great game and furthermore, it was a glimpse of the future.

Ubisoft would prefer to view the debut of Watch Dogs in the latter light. During a recent CVG interview, Ubisoft Montreal executive Lionel Raynaud said the team has big plans for the new IP, despite the mixed critical reception.

Despite the 8 million copies shipped to date, the game did have its fair share of detractors. However, Raynaud compares it to the original Assassin's Creed:

"The reception has actually been pretty close to Assassin's Creed [1]. With the first one we didn't have such a good reception, and it was fair. We had a lot of flaws in the replayability of gameplay loops and you could feel that the game was a first iteration."

Raynaud added that the first AC title showed the franchise's "clear potential" and that's what we got with Watch Dogs. It's also worth noting that the game's delay was a good thing, as Raynaud said it let them "release the game without compromises and do everything we wanted." We definitely liked Watch Dogs and remarked the franchise's potential, although we were a bit more excited after the first Assassin's Creed came out...

To add to that world "Please buy Far Cry 4 so we can turn that into another anual game."

So, seven years on from Assassin's Creed, with the likes of Far Cry 2 and 3, PoP2008, the rest of the AC series, and the more recent Splinter Cell games under their belts, they made the exact same missteps in fundamental game design. Sure, they may be able to rectify them, but with that much extra experience, it should not be necessary.

Ubisoft needs to stop with the mass production style of their games, and try to make each one truly individual. (Yes, they manage that with the Tom Clancy games, but it's impossible to deny the fundamental similarities between AC, Far Cry, and Watch Dogs, and even The Division looks to be replicating some of that).

Many people dislike annuality, but I have seen a lot of games those are not annual and don't have the similar quality of Ubisoft's games.
