I agree with that. It's been a long console cycle. We are heading into the 8th year I believe if you count the 360 which you have to. I do think there is some fatigue with this gen's hardware. Game sales have been slumping for awhile. I think some have just grown tired of this gen's hardware. I never understood why this gen's hardware was so gimped when it came to memory. It's amazing what developers have done with the 256 mb of graphics memory on the PS3 but that has to be a huge bottleneck for developers. I think the market and developers are starving for new hardware and I am glad Sony has given us plenty of memory this time.

Sony had hoped the development gomers would understand that to do amazing things they should use the cell cores to process graphics instead of trying to cram it all into that little graphics bottleneck.

I just hope Sony can take the reigns and be on top this generation like it was in previous ones, not out of my fanboyism but because, in my experience, when the true leader in gaming advancement is also on top it's best for the industry and gamers. Whether you preferred PS3 or 360 hardware is irrelevant, Microsoft's market dominance for most of the generation led to a lot of sad changes all over the place.

I definitely get where you're coming from. I got to admit though, Microsoft did a great job on the rise of online gaming and community. Other than that, I don't want the gaming industry to become a business of bribing with $$$.

Fully agree World - I finally got around to checking out the 360, and while it's a perfectly competent console, a number of things about it feel like that its focus is to extract money from gamers, rather than provide services. Too many ads, and the ridiculous Gold paywall. Some of the games are great (although if you had to pick one, I'd recommend the Playstation) and you could have fun as a gamer on either, but I'd fear for gaming if Microsoft was the only game in town.

On the other hand, when the PS2 and PSOne were on top, we got a great range of games and no silly 'lets fleece our customers' rubbish like XBL Gold. Sure, Sony make plenty of mistakes, and one day they might change, but they seem to have more of the gamers interest in mind than MS.

Sure, and also how they used their money to torpedo the JRPG market, paid 3rd party devs not to go Sony exclusive, and generally got the whole world focused on twitch/shoot gaming that annihilated genre boundaries like Survival Horror.

But if Sony emulate M$ throughout the next generation, as many of their decisions regarding the PS4 suggest they intend to do, does it really matter which ends up on top?

The "sad changes" will continue to occur in either case.

Yeah because if Sony gets more profit they can continue to fund better gaming experiences through companies like Quantic Dream, Santa Monica, Media Molecule, Guerrilla, Sucker Punch, etc.

I believe that Sony can emulate many of the features without completely fleecing their customers. They could have done it with the PS3 and PSN but they didn't. To our benefit. Of course it would have been damaging to do so mid-generation and that is the last thing Sony needed considering the negatives they have faced. Either way, until they announce pricing on said features I will hope for the best.

But honestly, If I were to choose who I want on top it would be Sony and the PlayStation Brand. Not only because I am highly invested in it but also because if Sony doesn't make major gains this generation who knows... But I think they are on the right track.

First thing that came to mind immediately when reading this was the comment made by that Microsoft guy. He said something about the UK not being much aware of the event on the 20th of Feb. It doesn't seem to be the case.

Well, I can guarantee u there has been lots of media coverage here. The general view of the ps4 from UK gamers is quite positive.

I am sure there is excitement but just because a new console(s) will be coming out this year or early next I do not think its going to sustain it for long... on its own. Its like that brand new TV, once you get it... well whens the new one coming out. I have seen and HAD to listen to that from people I know.

That said, I am sure the PS4 will be a change from the PS3, BUT the box itself is nothing unless decent games come out. REally, the only reason everyone seems to thing its time for a new console is really all about the fact the most of the games coming out are sequels or the 3 iteration within a series. On top of which the FPS craze with all the generic looking games with little story. I am not saying thats ALL there is but it seems to me whats out there is not a leap in the game market.

And the excuse that its because the consoles need to be new and greater. Its because imagination and creativity seems lacking in some devs/publishers offices with a few exceptions.

For me this generation, one of the top games that to me was different from everyone else was Mirrors Edge. I thought it brought some new life to gaming industry with the possibility of expanding it after its initial launch. That what is needed. I do not play a game to go up to a leaf on a tree to see all the wonderous detail. I want entertainment with story and gameplay.

My fear is everyone will be wowed by the pretty visuals next gen and we will end up back with mundance generic game once again with the few gems from the artists of the gaming industry. And with all the DLC craze, pre-order bonuses and now microtransactions..... its gonna be expensive just to play a good quality and appropriately priced game for entertainment.

I wouldn't put it past some publishers letting you rent a game for a while and pay as you play.

BUT heres hoping ANYWAY that the entertainment will be there... and hopefully the artists of the game industry who can afford to take risks will be there too.

I honestly believe that this gen will be extremely different. One thing that comes to mind is the belief that Tablets and Phones are taking over the gaming industry. That segment is in rapid growth. Exponential even. But that does not mean that Consoles are dead. I think they will evolve into that 1 box to rule them all. And eventually when all those IOS and Android gamers get really hooked they will learn what we have known all along.
