Unreal Engine 4.5 Gives Skin A Distinctly Human Tinge

It's almost time for another iteration of the Unreal Engine, and this one is going to really liven things up.

In a new preview that offers several intriguing details, we learn that human skin will look more human than ever.

Unreal Engine 4.5 adds subsurface light scattering effects that gives digital skin a much more natural appearance. Therefore, instead of the harsher angles, you get softer, fleshier surfaces that denote humanity rather than robotics. This new feature will also help make other objects look more realistic, such as leaves and candle wax. Furthermore, we'll get a new raytracing technique that should produce more authentic shadows, which may not sound like much, but shadowing is actually pretty important for a game's presentation.

Of course, game designers are going to have to properly implement Unreal Engine 4.5 so you can see all these cool new upgrades. This is only a tool; we need masters of that tool to get the full benefit of the technology in question.

I've always been a fan of this engine simply cause it's the engine that's delivered most of my favourite games to date, and I'm no less of a fan now that it's confirmed this engine will support Linux from day one.

Go Epic!

was there ever an engine better than the unreal engine or the one that the Crysis makers use?

Well the Havoc engine is nothing to sneeze at. We did get The Last of Us out of that one if I'm not mistaken.

From a graphical point of view CryEngine was way better than Unreal. And Dice's Frostbite is quite something too.
Both were newer than Unreal 3.x of course - but they are catching up now.

CryEngine3 is mostly visual quality driven at the expense of hardware. You need a lot of hardware to push this puppy.

Unreal 4 is a balanced system. Most devs enjoy its easy to use tools. I'd say cryengine 3 still beats Unreal 4 in environmental graphics, but only with high end hardware.

Unity 5 is another great engine. It's probably best known for its lighting engine. Very advanced. Also runs pretty well on a variety of hardware.

It seems like most engines are tailored for the low/mid range hardware in mind. Not just for the sake of consoles. We're seeing more of the engines optimized for mobiles, too.
