Unreal Engine 4 For PS4 Rarin' To Go

The Unreal Engine has become a popular staple in the game-making business, so it's no surprise to learn that the latest iteration is already available for the next generation.

Epic Games has announced that the Unreal Engine 4 is now available for the PlayStation 4. The company says it will give developers the resources they need "to harness the full power of its Unreal Engine 4 technology and realize all facets of their creativity using Epic's revolutionary new toolset."

There have been many proponents of the Unreal Engine over the years, although there are also those in the PlayStation realm who don't find it overly appealing. Epic has also battled common claims that all Unreal-powered games look the same. In my eyes, it all sort of depends on how you use it; the Unreal tech was used in the Mass Effect and Borderlands games, as well as in Mirror's Edge, Lost Odyssey and the upcoming Bioshock Infinite. So you can make the graphics awfully special if you know what you're doing.

Here's what Epic founder and CEO Tim Sweeney had to say about UE4:

"Being on the ground floor of Sony Computer Entertainment’s Tools and Middleware program is part of our long-term commitment to Unreal Engine 4 developers, and we’re excited to help teams ship fantastic new games for PlayStation 4. Unreal Engine 4 has been built from the ground up to take full advantage of high-end next-generation hardware capabilities."

This is truly great news! I remember reading, maybe here, that Epic was pissed because UE4 wouldn't work on next gen current specs. It's great to know Sony raised their technical specs so more developers will be able to create UE4 games. I mean UE3 was a tad, tad disappointing but it was so popular. Let's hope all lessons have been learned.

I don't understand why the U3 engine doesn't get the credit it deserves.

Come on, among the multi platform games, the ones running on U3 are the ones that looked, and most importantly, played better on PS3.

The ones using U3 are the ones that almost have parity with the xbox 360 counterparts. The studios who used different engines to create their games, you can tell the diferences between the ps3 and xbox360 versions are way more notorious, in extreme cases, the PS3 versions where really bad.

Either way I'm happy the PS4 is looking up to be the powerhouse the PS3 was supposed to be.

Imagine a FFX remake with THOSE graphics. It sort of reminded me of a Summon CGI clip.

The video was cool, but it wasn't as sweet as I was expecting. Here's hoping Naughty Dog will blow that tech demo out of the water.

I know I'll get thumbed down to hell for this but. I don't know man. If ND does blow anything out of the water this gen it may not be for long since the PS4 will be easy to develop for this time around. With it being pretty much a PC and all.

I love this engine. It's been used as engine for many of my favourite games over the years, so how can I not.

So how much are they gonna charge devs to license this new iteration?

Why does it seem like this new UE4 demo is significantly scaled down in quality & effects compared to the very first demo I remember seeing of this almost a year ago?!?

Take a look at this for comparison: http://www.ign.com/videos/2012/06/08/unreal-4-engine-elemental-demo

It's not the exact same demo, but if you look at the 2-minute mark, they're very similar, except there's snow, and lots more effects going on in the older demo, The new one looks really flat even by comparison! which is kinda weird, don't ya think??

It's almost as if they've scaled down the engine in order to work on the new "next-gen" consoles... but nah, it's "Supercharged" so how could that be?

I'd be more convinced if it had a "This tech demo is running on a PS4 in real time" disclaimer
