Destiny Players Getting A Boatload Of Bang For Their Buck

If you hadn't guessed, a whole lot of people play Destiny on a routine basis.

The game has only been available for a month and yet, millions of gamers enjoy the MMOFPS-type experience every day. In a new post at Bungie's official website, Community Manager David "DeeJ" Dague revealed that 3.2 million players log in every day.

Bungie has already announced that the play sessions for these players average three hours, even on weekdays (lots of college students, we assume), and the average player logs into the game 1.8 times per day, and has played the game 20.9 times overall. In the past three weeks, Bungie's latest blockbuster reeled in more online players than it did during the same span for Halo 3 and Halo: Reach combined. Of course, those games had solo campaigns and the industry continues to grow at a rapid rate, but still...

Said Dague:

"Your reactions and your opinions have helped us to make Destiny better over this past month. Pioneering something new is never easy. When we see the raw numbers, it’s easy for us to say that the destination was worth the journey."

So, how often do you play? Be honest now.

Despite the fact that every time I play I'm constantly reminded why this game just isn't that great overall. I still have some good times logging in and playing with friends for a few hours. Even if we continue to do the same things over and over and over and over...

It's tiresome but coop is a fun implementation and it saves this game for me.

you seem so down lately Bigrailer. You used to always be an amped up PS-guy.

Anyway, it's the quality action that gets me. Yes, the strikes are always setup the same but because the gunplay is so good I still feel great satisfaction from every session. It's always nice too having your skill tree level up and your gear etc.
It's also nice how the time-of-day randomization helps make familiar levels look and feel somewhat changed.

But of course it could be better.
In my experience I'm now really wondering where the heck are the customized loadouts?
In a single strike your enemy type can vary, where certain weapons do the job better than others. Where's the option to just access a quick loadout swap without having to slowly do everytihng manually? This is a big reason why I nailed this one on it's control in my user-review.
The gun play may be aces but all the other control characteristics intrinsic to a game of this type are just not there. And I can feel that all the more strongly the more I play it.

The thing is Temjin I don't feel Bungie wants us to be able to quickly swap on the fly to deal with any enemy type being limited for your weapon selection is only another reason to play with a squad.

Also even if there was a quick swap you also have to remember Bungie made it that when you switch your special and heavy weapons you lose almost all of your ammo so it would actually be less helpful than it sounds.

in randomized strikes though where you don't know who your players are it really is annoying. I realize Bungie may have their intentions but for a game that can be spent playing a lot as an individual (as I do) and only with randomized match-made strike members it's hard relieing on the wisdom of other players.

You may say I wouldn't like that because of the ammo thing, but I do in fact find myself hot-swapping weapons and subclasses mid-strike as it is. If I notice my mates are dieing a lot I switch to my Blade Dancer subclass because I can revive fallen mates from being invisible (this has paid off a ton of times). I just time the switch inbetween little skirmishes or right after I use my super. It wouldn't be hard for them to implement this. It's just a control implementation. If some players wanted to use it, they could. if they didnt, they wouldn't have to.

and seriously, how often do you use "instant ammo refills" from your inventory? probably never because the game makes it so slow and hard to get to them. What is the point of even having them then? haha it's just a broken implementation right now. "Here you can have something instantly! but only after a few seconds of getting there"

like imagine Diablo making you pause the action to restore your magic or health from a potion? That would be stupid. It's an age-old mechanic and Destiny doesn't have it.

Have you not done Raids or Nightdalls? I use the ammo packs constantly! XD Having full heavy ammo is utterly essential and outside of the weekly, nightfall, and raid you can just powerhouse through the elemental shields outside of these 3 they aren't that big of a deal. Because you mentioned the shield thing I figured this is what you were talking about and none of these game modes have match making so you would know who you are playing with.

In a Tiger playlist I can just use my Pocket Infinity Fusion Rifle or Deviant Gravity LMG and blast through anything no matter the shield with no issues.
But on the Weekly 26 and 28, Nightfall, and Raid that is less of an option because you simply get "Resist" for every shot which does about 1/10 the damage even a full clip from my Pocket Infinity which is easily one of the most over powered guns in the game doesn't kill Raid Praetorians because of the wrong elemental type, 8 full bursts will roughly take down the shield and 3/5 of the HP.

In all the game modes with random matchmaking a Legendary Fusion Rifle Burst or a few shots from an LMG will easily take out a shield no matter what element it is. So where it does matter you will be able to coordinate with your team because it won't be a PuG group.

Now a quick option to use the ammo packs I would love and that would make total sense.

Temjin - I know... haha... I guess after this week things will change with the release of borderlands. That should brighten up my life. No, really I just am more confused with how Bungie created this game. It seems like they weren't on top of their game.

Yes the action and gameplay is quite fun. With the addition of coop that is why I keep coming back to it most evenings.

I really wish they had a quick swap to. I'd much rather have that then a wave, a dance move, etc... That was poor thinking in my mind.
I'm actually with Temjin on that whole issue. In fact I never used my instant refills until last night because it is an inconvenience, not because I didn't need them. But because when I did need it I was always in a battle I had to make due with what I had because the game goes on while you are navigating to use it. And while I love the idea of holding buttons down to select certain things, the instant refill is not a place for that because again the game goes on. Now after using them finally last night I did go and stock up because they are nice to have for sure.

I totally get both sides of that issue but it's not a matter of not needing to use them it's the problem of getting to the point of using them rather than it being instant is he issue.

By the way you can still add me on PSN - same name as I use here if either of you want. Although I'll be enjoying Borderlands come Tuesday. ;)

It wont be that way when they keep on charging you for the latest DLC to continue the experience. Much like on Battlefield 3 how I had the standard edition and would always get kicked out of groups for not having the DLC map that the games next round went into. Just not my kind of gaming experience, I like to buy the game and feel content that I am getting all it has to offer.

I still play!
With the exception of Drive Club it's ALL I've played since it's launch.

It has actually caused me to play more as a result.
Right now I'm just under 48 hours of total play time.
That puts me in, at or around, 1.3 hours of play as a daily avg.

I haven't been one of those people. The game plays fine enough, but the missions are very repetitive and I just get bored. Good multiplayer though. I do wish there was a better pay off with the hand cannon.

Better pay off? Hand cannon is easily one of the best weapon types in the game right up there with the higher end Assault rifles.

If you have the time pick up The Lord High Fixer from the crucible salesman or The Devil You Know if you are more on the Vanguard side of things.

You can also get an INSANE Hand Cannon known as Timur's Lash from simply playing the Iron Banner game mode it is a random reward you can receive after finishing the match, I believe you need a positive K/D.

Or for the Exotic route Hawkmoon and Last Word are absolutely devastating, Thorn is a let down but Bungie has confirmed a buff for both it and Bad Juju.

You just have to have a fast trigger finger and avoid getting right in the face of someone who has a shotgun or assault rifle and you are golden.

The Lord High Fixer available for purchase has the perfect set of mid and long range abilities it can actually out snipe a sniper most of the time.

Good game and all but I guess this single player can't be converted so easily. It was just supposed to be... more grand than what it is. It's like the basic of the basic online experience but with a lot of sheer quality. I was thinking it'd be different somehow.

I love how it's become the "in thing" to trash the game every chance you get, even if it's just a "It's not that good" in an attempt to bring it down from what it is but then people play it more than any other game they own. Every time I get on my PS4, day or night, weekday or weekend, over half of the people on my friend list are playing Destiny. If people are playing it, it must be good.
Can we please stop the jealousy/hate/nut-riding and admit this is clearly the best shooter/multiplayer/action game available right now? And before you throw any other game up against it...read the numbers. Numbers don't lie.

There's no doubt that the game has some of the best combat, gun play/ game play available. There's plenty of replay value. But if you're going to argue there's a lot of substance here you'd be wrong. People keep playing because there's a strange fascination with wanting the best gear even if it means grinding far beyond needed and farming the same areas and missions over and over.

This game offers little and what it does they expect the players to play the same missions over, with the addition of higher levels and modifiers. People replay them for gear and the gameplay. Not because they appreciate a game that offers them little in the grand scheme.

Edit: I forgot to mention crucible helps a lot.

I understand the light story content but it's a shooter. There's not been a shooter with any story to speak of since Doom...maybe.

But perhaps you should read the comments of the people who posted after I did, Bigrailer. Like I said, the proof is i the pudding. The game doesn't have to be this or that...it's just addictive.

This is the only game I've played since it released. The drive for new loot and gear just keeps me and my friends going. I can't remember playing any game as much as I've played Destiny in such a short time.

Sharing the same sentiments. I just can't stop. It seems that the more I play it, the more I want to get better gear. Maybe it helps that I've only bought my PS4 just two months ago, and Destiny is, for me, somewhat of a 'launch' title.

30 hours into this one. Level 23 Hunter.

I can understand the low reviews based on the lack of story. It's a slow burner. I'm loving the variety however. Loads to do with the missions, patrols, strikes, raids and crucible PvP.

I think I'll never be high enough levelled or skilled enough to do the big raids. Then again I think it has so much longevity it isn't funny. Certainly I really enjoy logging in and seeing what I want to do for an hour or two. Doing strikes with total strangers is a lot of fun.

It may not be the MMO that all the hardcore were expecting but to me it has a brilliant mix of styles. Couldn't see myself going back to playing an ordinary multiplayer shooter after this.

I'm even warming to the way all the Grimoire is on their Bungie site. I can be sitting at work or at home checking out my stats, reading the cards and the forum.

Also for all those whiners out there saying it takes too long to grind, there certainly seems to be enough level 28 and level 29's out there when I am getting slaughtered in the Crucible and Iron Banner.
