CD Projekt Red: We Always Wanted To Do Open-World

A lot of people really liked The Witcher 2: Assassin's of Kings. But developer CD Projekt Red felt something was missing from the experience.

According to what Michal Platkow-Gilewski told VG24/7 in a new interview, that something was an open-world sandbox. And thanks to the power of the next-gen consoles, the team was able to deliver just that for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt:

"It's only with the next-gen consoles that we can do much more. Open-world was something we've always wanted to do and we believed that was the missing element for this story. To make it truly immersive we had to let people explore it their way. We always wanted this but we couldn't because of technical limitations and because of the experience and size of the team."

In the past, the developer has said the highly anticipated role-playing game is about 35 times the size of its predecessor, and even 20 percent larger than The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The game is slated to arrive in February and given the sheer size, you might have to clear a few weeks...or months in your calendar.

I hope it's not empty space. I want to be able to go in all the houses and steal and engage in crazy activities and ride horses and women and such.

Didn't Red have something to do with Arcania?

You can ride the women in the witcher 2 so I'm sure we will be doing some of that here :D

The dev diaries make it seem like they are trying to make the locations meaningful in this game, it looks like its very handcrafted and not just like randomly generated from an engine.

Looking forward to this, Witcher 1 and 2 were excellent, and 3 looks a step up again :).
