Sony: I Don't Want To See Anything You "Shouldn't Reveal Yet"

Like any PlayStation fan, I'm excited about that PlayStation experience event coming up in December.

The two-day gathering in Las Vegas is gonna be pretty special; in fact, Sony's bragging that it'll be "unprecedented" and executive Scott Rohde even said during a recent PlayStation Blogcast that they might show off stuff "we shouldn't show you yet."

And that's where you lose me.

Publishers have got to stop doing this. I believe we saw Uncharted 4: A Thief's End too early (haven't seen anything besides that one teaser for a while), and it seems obvious now that they should've waited on exposing The Last Guardian. It seems like every year, we come across a bunch of games that really didn't need to be revealed; Watch Dogs is another good example. The hype just spirals out of control, which inevitably leads to ridiculous expectations when the game finally arrives.

The Order: 1886 could be another game that wasn't quite ready to be revealed and in fact, we've heard Ready at Dawn say they were sort of pressured into showing it before they were ready. Honestly, there's plenty of great stuff on the horizon. If what you have to show isn't ready, it isn't ready. Somehow, we'll manage to survive.

Well from Sony's perspective people expect to see something. I agree with you but someone considering a console as a purchase is way more likely to look at one that has games in development that they would be interested in. Plus people seem to freak out when they go a month without Sony announcing something or pushing a console update or something like that. I'm not sure why though lol I think people are simply impatient and don't fully realize that knowing about a game doesn't make it come out faster.

I hope at least one is a new rpg. Maybe the new Guerrilla Games ip. But I agree, showing them too early can cause many problems.

its all about the hype factor. it sucks because theres always a chance that your hype might blow with high expectations.

Why hasn't Sony done a Syphon Filter reboot? Seriously, that game changed my view on video game plots

I think Sony is just very hard pressed to show something - anything - at this point in time. They feel their grip may slip if they don't.

I suppose it depends on how you interpret it. On the one hand, it could be related to a game that is too early in development (as is often the case), and that would be disappointing, or it could be interpreted as something more along the lines of a major gameplay spoiler. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that Sony go too far in their promotion of a game's biggest moments and end up leaving the final product feeling a little underwhelming. **cough** Uncharted 3 **cough**

But something unprecedented... that's a cool idea. A lot of smoke is being blown about in relation to this event and the announcements that we're supposed to see. Let's just hope that it lives up to the hype. I think that it would be boss for them to show a brief snapshot of all of the games in development in the first party studios... Now that would be something that they shouldn't show and it would generate a ton of excitement about what's yet to come.

The HYPE is selling games these days, doesn't matter what the actual outcome will be...

Giving early reveals isn't all bad. It's just simple marketing.
They need to let fans know that they're really working on something... and revealing an early build might be the only thing available to get gamers excited.

If they did nothing, gamers would get impatient and angry.

Wait, gamers would do that anyways. Nevermind...

They always show stuff earlier at the start of a gen, it's the way things work - they don't have as much in the pipeline, and it hasn't been there as long, so we see stuff earlier. As the machines mature, there's less of a need to show stuff early as there's so much on the way the long lead time is silly.

As for Rohde's choice of words though, that's just marketing talk I reckon, and good marketing talk at that ;).

Sometimes I wonder if Sony has truly been listening. I know they have, there is no doubt about that because they are moving in the right direction but I have always been of a mind to tell Sony to just right the ship. Focus and just deliver the goods. Let the product speak for itself. Announce late and release early. But most of all DO NOT lead your customers on with unfulfilled products and promises. Agent, The Last Guardian, the as of yet unrealized Vita potential etc.. We are in an Age where the consumer has more power than ever with information instantly available to all. This can and will destroy companies. So if you are clearly stating that you may be showing unfinished works then I fear that this may be detrimental to your current path to financial recovery. Or, am I reading too much into this? Maybe Sony does really have that master plan that I have envisioned coming from them all these years and they will tease enough to gain healines or truly shock the industry? I think we are lo g iverdue for somethinh like that. We shall see.

On another somewhat relative not I feel this day and age there is no excuse for any company not to produce a good if not GREAT product. The technology and the means are there. Take games development for instance. Money simply can't buy a good idea, a wonderful story or an unforgettable experience. This is where the talent comes in. Thank You to all that have provided me countless hours of entertainment through out the years.

That said, to me the technical side of this should NOT be much of a factor this day and age. I feel a developer should only use the tools he is capable of using. Especially if you are producing a product intended to be sold to customers. If a developer cannot handle using the most advanced engines or pushing the limits of the tech then don't do it. Experiment on your own time. Do not deliver to me an unfinshed idea with hope that I will excuse easily resolved technical issues and outright failures. If you are ADEPT with the tools then by all means. If not then stick to what you know and PERFECT it until you are ready for the next wave of technology. This is where I feel that some potentially great games are handicapped. Reaching for 4k this or framerate that when you simply may not have the expertise in completing the goal. Why do we still have screen tear? Framerate drops and bodies halfway in the walls?!? AI behaving like March of the Wooden Soldiers. Crazy.

Over....
