Real Special Ops Soldiers Consulted On Rainbow Six Siege

If you want authenticity, you have to go to the source.

Developer Ubisoft Montreal has consulted with the experts in order to make Rainbow Six Siege as believable as possible.

The studio went into some detail on their blog, where they spoke about inviting GIGN operators to their offices to play the game and verify its realism. For those who don't know, GIGN is a division of the French Armed Forces that specializes in hostage rescues.

"While a lot of people on our team are veteran FPS developers, at the end of the day we're just gamers and consulting with the real operators helps make sure that we're doing it right. We get to ask them a lot of questions and get great feedback. Interestingly enough, they told us that if given a choice to protect a teammate or a civilian, the GIGN operator would protect the civilian. That's some serious dedication to preserving life and we wanted to emulate that kind of passionate commitment in the game."

GIGN soldiers have appeared in games before, including SOCOM and Call of Duty. In the Hostage Mode for Rainbow Six Siege, one team of defenders has a hostage under their control, and the other team must locate and extract that hostage. Or, they can kill all enemy players to win the round. The process of breaching will be extra tricky, so says designer Chris Lee:

"You have to be careful when trying to breach into the area where the hostage is. You can't just throw a frag or any explosives near the hostage without a second thought. You have to be very careful where you aim your weapon as well. It greatly increases the tension around the hostage, which differentiates it from other types of objectives."

Hope you've got an abundance of patience and a strategic, team-oriented mindset.
