Do You Plan To Own The PlayStation 4 And The New Xbox?
Maybe it's time to start planning for the next generation. And when Sony and Microsft have fully revealed all the details regarding their new consoles, do you think you'll end up owning both? Or aren't you sure?
I've always been a proponent of owning multiple consoles in most every generation. The only time that philosophy slipped a little was during my JRPG obsession phase back in the original PlayStation days. As the N64 basically had nothing to satisfy my cravings, and neither did the Dreamcast (outside of Skies of Arcadia), I saw no reason to own anything besides the PS1. But prior to that and after that, I've always owned at least two consoles in each generation (loved the SNES/Genesis combo!).
The bottom line is that if you're a hardcore gamer, you want to play the best of the best. And in order to do that, you almost invariably need more than one console, just because exclusive software is often the cream of the crop and you don't wanna miss it. But looking to the future, do you see this changing? Or even if it doesn't change, do you think you'll be perfectly happy with just one system next time around? Do you believe there will be enough multiplatform titles to go around, and you'll just pick the console with the best exclusives? That being the case, I'm pretty sure I'd argue for the PS4, but you never know.
Multi-console ownership has worked out well for me in the past. But before I do it again next generation, I have to see something on the Xbox that I really want and can't get anywhere else. And now that I'm pretty tired of Halo and Gears of War, I'm not sure that'll happen...guess we'll have to wait and see. I'll be as optimistic as possible. :)

I'm already sold on the PS4. I'll have to see what M$ has to offer with the nextbox, but I'm pretty sure I'll own it down the road.

I have always been one to say that The RED RING was a built in hypnotizer. Who buys a machine with such a high failure rate only to buy it again and again?
And again and again and again.....

Plus, the PS3 has taken such good care of me with exceptional software I ask, what's the point of going anywhere else?

The first Xbox, IMHO, is one of the most reliable consoles ever.
Mine is still running strong to this day. Ehem.... And with a software mod I have all the ATARI/MAME/NES/SNES/GENESIS/MASTERSYSTEM/N64 (YOU NAME IT) games running on it via emulation. It's great.

Will be getting the PS4 but probably at fall 2014.
As for the next Xbox, nah, right now the Wii U has some awesome games and more upcoming.
So it depends on the line-up of titles the new Xbox will have.
Speaking of games, am I the only one around here who doesn't give a damn bout how high tech or high-end the consoles are?
All I need are the AAA titles and I'm plenty satisfied.

I was always excited and on board for every new generation, but this latest one has sucked all the fun out of gaming. I'm not sure I'm interested any more.
I could spend $600+ on a new console and what tiny handful of games aren't corrupted into unpleasantness, or turn that money back toward the cool games I've missed over the years on my still perfectly functional consoles, from PS3 all the way back to NES. The latter seems a more prudent investment.
Heck, I beat Faxanadu for the first time in the past couple weeks, and I can't recall any recent PS3 experience that has been more enjoyable than that 23-year-old NES game -- perhaps Ni no Kuni, which I'm working on finishing. But Ni no Kuni-type games just don't happen with enough reliability any more.

As for the PS4.... I am not one of those gotta be first in line to purchase. Always best to wait for the second gen of a console when they have the kinks out. Mind you based on whats been said of the architecture of the PS4 I don't see that being a problem this time round as it was with first gen of PS3.
Long story short, I can wait..... and be jealous. :)
Keep Playing!

Microsoft doesn't look like it'll have much to offer, exclusive-wise, and Wii-U looks just as worthless to me as the Wii, so Ill just stick to a PS4 and my pc.

Unfortunately, my friends are all big Halo and PC fanboys. I let them play Uncharted, God of War, Gran Turismo, Heavy Rain, Killzone 2, but nothing seems to sway them from the call of Master Chief and their keyboards.
Sadly, there's a good chance I'll be forced to get the new Xbox when Halo 5 is released, or Gears of War 4. Dance Central is pretty popular with them too.
Meanwhile, I play God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, the Uncharted Trilogy, Killzone 2 and 3, Heavy Rain, Ratchet and Clank A Crack In Time, Infamous 1 and 2, Journey, Flower, Demon's Souls, ICO/Shadow of the COlossus HD and Littlebig Planet 2 without them...
Actually, with all those exclusives, it's not so bad. :)

There's such an insane amount of quality games released these days and since practically every game that best match my preferences are multiplat anyway, unless the Xbox all of a sudden is getting loads of RPGs and innovative open-world awesomeness as exclusives I really could not care less for that platform.

And a 360 for the multiplats that ran better on it, like Bayonetta and Assassin's Creed 1 and 2. Apart from that, not much difference.
At least the PS4 won't suffer ANY multiplat problems. Hopefully it might win back some exclusives in the process, AND hopefully I can convince my friends to get Destiny on PS4. (Let's face it, it's Bungie's answer to a mutliplat Halo)

The Dreamcast was part of the same gen as the PS2...
Just saying.
On topic: I've always owned multiple consoles per gen. Like I have a PS3, a 360 and a Wii right now. But I don't always get them all. It will all depend on what Microsoft is going to reveal in april. For some reason, I expect their next console to be underwhelming...

If you were a hardcore 2D fighting game fan, the Saturn was the only way to go for its time. Aside from Street Fighter Alpha 3 and the original Guilty Gear, 2D fighters on PSX were dreadful. You NEEDED a Saturn to play proper home ports of X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Superheroes vs. Street Fighter, Vampire Saviour, the best version of Street Fighter Alpha 3, etc. All import of course, but anyone who bought a Saturn after 1996 modded it anyway. Note that outside of emulators, Saturn is still the ONLY legit way to play proper XSF and MSF at home. Saturn also had best versions of Street Fighter Alpha 2, Marvel Superheroes, King of Fighters 95, and a couple others I'm forgetting.
As you said, "if you're a hardcore gamer, you want to play the best of the best". There were legimate reasons to own a Saturn (in addition to fighters, it was also the only home to Guardian Heroes until fairly recently). My college crew used my Saturn heavily well into 2000, where it got replaced bya Dreamcast for Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
And the DC definitely didn't straddle generations. It was the same generation as PS2. Just because the DC got annihilated by the PS2 doesn't mean it wasn't part of the same generation. Likes its predecessor, the DC also had best versions of 2D fighters (hell, for years, it the only proper home port of MvC2; in fact, among the extreme hardcore, it's STILL the only proper home port), though at least the PS2 wasn't anywhere near as bad as the original PSX in this regard. MvC2 was unplayable on PS2, but everything ranges from acceptable (SF Anniversary) to fantastic (Guilty Gear XX series).
Anyway, last generation I owned a PS3 and a Wii. The PS3 was my main system, and I got the Wii for Smash Bros and, much MUCH later, Xenoblade. Barring anything unforeseen, that will likely repeat with PS4 and Wii-U. The latter I'll have to get to play the new Xeno game, which I'd actually prefer NOT to do, but Xenoblade was too good and this new Xeno already has me giddy with the bringing back of mechs, so I NEED to get it. I'll pick up the PS4 when/if it gets a decent version of the latest Street Fighter and/or Final Fantasy.
Personally, I hate having multiple consoles. I generally only play a few types of games, and it's so much easier (not to mention cheaper) when they're all on one console. I would rather just get the PS4 and be done with it.

So... The PS2 straddled generations as well then, Right? Since it came out a year and then some before the Gamecube and the XBox. Revisionist history much?
Just so you know, you may not call the Saturn a competitor to the PSX, but even fewer call the Dreamcast a competitor to it... ¬_¬
You took my post way too personal. I thought your mind got confused with the consoles that made up each console generations...
But with an ego such as the one you have, how come didn't I realise that was how you'd react...
The guy can never be wrong, after all.
Silly me.

If there are a similar number of quality exclusives, I'll pick up the next Xbox late in the gen, when it's cheap, and catch up. I like games from different generations, so I don't mind doing the whole 'catch up' thing (I actually quite like the original Fable and Halo, although Halo has some seriously flawed repetitive padding in there, for no good reason I can think) late in the gen. But it took 'em until Halo 4 to win me over for two generations - given their rumoured new focus, I may be PS4 and PC only next time around.

consoles are up against ALLOT of competition now, allot more than they were this gen.
so to coax people over aint going to be easy.
not to mention dev kits have been out for quite a while now, so hopefully there will be the biggest number of launch games ever and the quality will be there to match.
i just hope there a metric sh*t ton more reliable than current systems!
so f*cking sick of everything breaking within a few months of purchase!
ive had 8 ps3s now, and every single one has broken within 6 months of ownership!
every laptop ive owned has also broken within 6 months of ownership!
hell the one im typing on now, i bought in december last year and yesterday i had to take it in to get the charger replaced.
so f*cking sick of everything breaking!
its amazing and pathetic how unreliable things are these days!
as the saying goes technology is suppose to make your life easier, but all its doing is making it HARDER!

If Sony opens up the PSN for Indie development like Microsoft did, then that would tempt me to buy the PS4 more, but like this past generation, it was easier to make a PC game that was easily port to XBLA. So my hope is Sony will do something similar for this generation.
I loved my PS3 but there was limited opportunity for me to make games for the PSN than it was for XBLA

It may be premature to say that I'm not interested in their new system before I see what it is, but based on their past record I'd say the chances are slim. And at the very least I'd see what happens in the market for at least a year, in case we have another technical disaster in the new system.
Besides, since I'll probably end up leaving my PS3 hooked up for quite a while even after getting a PS4, that's already one more console going than I usually have. So... not likely.

Also I'm getting interested on steam. I'm getting tired that games consoles can't play previous generation games. And if we are going to full digital, the steam sales are incredible. A few days ago, Darksiders II was like $7.00. That's something I would pay for only digital games, not the $20-$60 range that is common on game consoles.
But most likely will happen the same thing like this generation and I will end up buying both.
Let's see what happens.

My, what a difference five years makes. Gears of War and Halo, two great reason to own 360, are indeed getting played out, especially the latter. Halo 4 is an extremely well-made game that plays so similarly to its predecessors I flashed back to how bored I was back in the Halo TWO days. And here I am, still shooting away at these ridiculous purple aliens and their big dumb purple ships, taking tons of fire and standing behind pillars while my shields regenerate. Ugh. $60 to see what's happening with the story each time out is one thing. Am I really going to also plunk down $400-odd dollars to play more Halo every two years? I doubt it.
I was a HUGE fan of the first Gears of War, and both of its sequels were excellent as well. But I fear Microsoft and Epic intends to "Halo" the series -- keep doing what fans already love, and don't risk alienating fans with innovation. Do I need to keep playing the same series over and over and over and over again? The war with the locust is over. The gameplay has been perfected, and is very well-worn at this point. Perhaps there will be narrative and gameplay innovations to justify staying with this series, but right now it just looks like a series that had an excellent run, has run its course, and is doomed to retread the same ground (and gameplay) that I've already played the hell out of. I hope Epic finds a way to keep it innovative and interesting, but I'm skeptical.
Right now, signs suggest third party games will be identical on both systems. Presumably, both systems will excellent, and very nearly identical, online support, including online stores. Exclusives are a vanishing species -- Bungie's next game will be multiplat! -- though I'm much more optimistic about Sony's exclusive content over the next few years than Microsoft's.
Does any of this sound like a compelling argument for owning two systems next gen? A huge caveat for this, of course, is that we just don't know what Microsoft is planning right now. There could be a slew of amazing exclusive games and features on the system that justify the price of admission. But right now, a deep dive on one system -- most like the PS4 -- makes the most sense, in my eyes.
It's not even a money issue for me -- I'm a gainfully employed adult, and I can come up with a few hundred dollars for my toys :) -- as much as a time issue. Good lord, I don't have enough time for everything. In the next five years, I'm going to get married, have a kid or two, buy a house, continue singing in a band, hopefully take some major strides in my career that will lead to more work and responsibility, and I'll still have all my other interests as well. Video games will always be important to me, but my precious gaming hours are only going to dwindle. If the system's are as similar as I suspect they will be, sticking to one primary console is just going to make the most sense.
I'll cough up cash for both if they're both truly compelling in unique ways. But as it stands now, I'm just not sure that's going to happen.
