Rumor: Sony Adding Speech Recognition Tech To PS4
It's always nifty...even if it doesn't always work right.
According to TheSixthAxis, there's a distinct possibility that the new PlayStation console will include a speech recognition feature, which is interesting.
This is due to a LinkedIn job listing that reads:
"Sony Computer Entertainment America’s Research and Development department has a summer internship opportunity available. This intern will work within the Acoustic Analysis Group and the team is looking for motivated and enthusiastic students who will contribute to the voice recognition system and technologies for the PlayStation platforms."
The PS3 and Vita don't have a voice recognition system, so we'll just have to assume they're talking about a future project. Right now, all information concerning the PS4 can only be classified as "rumor," so you can't go around telling everyone the new PlayStation will have voice recognition. But then again, maybe you should...it's definitely a conversation-starter.
Perhaps Sony will drop the bomb at E3, which would make perfect sense. On the other hand, if the PS4 is too far away (which is possible), maybe we should be looking at E3 2013.

Your statement indicates what I consider to be the exact opposite of progress in video games. If Cole is grabbing the wrong ledge in InFamous4 I would be disappointed. I would rather have the technology level of today with "PERFECTED" gameplay than deal with that. I won't blame Cole though.
I say this because inFamous 3 is not even on the horizon let alone #4 so it is not beyond the realm of possibility that it will hit when the PS5 comes out. By that time technology will get under or skin. PS3 2007. PS4 2013-14-15? PS5 2020-2025? Who knows? Regardless, By that time Cole shouldn't be grabbing the wrong ledge.

As you of course know, If it is implemented on OS level then all software can utilize the feature, like is the case on the x360 nowadays.
There was also a war strategy game who had voice recognition, by the way. But man, it sucked. At least for us non-native english speaking gamers... Boy did I struggle with those voice commands.

That said, voice command only works in a room where you are the only source of speech. Much like gesture control, there is always the simple fact that people like to curl up on their favorite seat and pick up a controller. Personally, I think voice and gesture based command are gimmicks, nothing more, nothing less, and I don't personally need either.

I've not tried it on the X360, have you? It would be fun to try out. It would be awesome if it actually worked. Not as a primary input, but for minor stuff in the game, like changing weapon (instead of wheel), or simple commands to the companions... Yeah, it could be fun!

As Beam noted, it was also in Endwar (and was still a bit hit-and-miss, and slower, than just using the pad) and it's been in a few other games over the years. It's a nice touch in some circumstances (the best implementation I've seen, noting I don't have a 360/Kinect, was SOCOM 2, I'd say), but don't think it'll be a big thing. Although having it available at the OS level could be cool. What would be funky, would be using it to maybe increase the range of text-adventure style games (or even more creative stuff :)) for blind people. I always feel for vision-impaired folk (for many reasons, of course, no just gaming, but this is a gaming site), as gaming is very much visually focussed.

But... I actually expect this from the console. I expect this and a whole lot more. Technology is converging and soon my refrigerator will be capable of 1080p 60 fps gameplay. To keep the consumers attention this must happen.
What I do Care about is the TRUE GAMING experience that it will provide. Go ahead, go online. Play your music, watch you're Movies. Recognize my voice. Do any and all of those things and more. Just get the GAMING right and the true audience shall follow.

watching the trailer for kinect support for skyrim made me really enthusiastic for these kind of things its really cool!
think in infamous 3 instead of having to pause the game and scroll through tedious menus, you could switch powers, and types of powers by a few words.
