Destiny Users Hit 9.5 Million, Next "Full Game" In Development

Considering the distinct MMO structure in Destiny, you might think Activision would just release updates and expansions.

But in fact, the publisher has confirmed that development has already begun on the next "full game" in the series. This according to Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg (via GameSpot).

Activision has already said the franchise would have a 10-year lifespan, which evidently incorporates multiple installments into the vision. Bungie is also contracted to deliver multiple sequels for the new IP, so maybe it's going to turn into the new Call of Duty for a new generation. Lastly, we found out that there are 9.5 million registered users in Destiny, and the average player spends 3 hours in the game on a daily basis.

Are you one of the many avid players? And what would you like to see in future franchise entries?

I'm a fan and I'm on board with the franchise. 9.5 million is real impressive. Launching a whole new ip into safe orbit is no easy task. It looks like Bungie and Activision did it, with or without critical appraisal.

Count me in as well. Destiny has hooked me in, and while I am doing basically the same thing over and over again, I am hooked. I almost have my Soros Regime and Ice Breaker fully upgraded. These two weapons are my mainstays.

I also agree with you that the critics didn't matter much when it came to sales of this title. With that said, I fully expect Bungie to address every one of the complaints between now and Destiny 2.

I'm definitely one of those 3-hour per day players. For future releases, I'm okay with making new Raids friends-only, but probably it would be good to make 'previous' or 'outdated' raids available for matchmaking. Yup, it could throw in balancing issues, but I'm afraid players will continue to long for VoG-calibre raids that offer matchmaking. And, since, new raids will eventually outclass the VoG in terms of hype, excitement, and (hopefully) fun, the idea that VoG could offer 'newbies' to raids some form of training might be good overall.

I kinda feel you, Tem. I work nights so most people are at work when I play. Well, when I would be playing had I not broken my controller playing this game. LOL That's what happens when you have four people playing in the house and one controller. Thank God the new colors have come out. Methinks it's time to color co-ordinate the household.

Also, how about some form of text chat? :/ I don't care how limited it is, but looking for raid parties will exponentially be a lot easier if we had some form of cheap communication other than voice.

Umm, so this game won't really have a 10 year plan... I mean u can't continue to pour time into something that will ultimately be succeeded by its sequel!

K, so by the time you spend hundreds of dollars on the game, there's going to be a sequel to it. Destiny has become everything I don't want it to be. It really sounds just like any other ip, but with extra expensive DLC. I envisioned that it was going to be a true mmorpg, with deep gameplay mechanics that involves leveling up beyond abilities and weapons, and an unlimited universe of free roam with randomly generated sequence of engaging events. I really thought it would be a game changing ip, that is truly unlimited in scale and a deep, extensive story that unfolds without the need for a sequel for a really long time.

I guess what I want to know is how frequent they'll be making these sequels. I mean if it's going to have multiple sequels, what's so revolutionary or different about it from others? I actually thought consoles finally hve their own WoW, Starcraft or runescape.

Well daus26, we don't know how long it will be before we see Destiny 2. I have a suspicion that as long as Destiny maintains a player base, the DLC will continue.

Now while in theory a console type WOW sounds nice, I fully believe a subscription based model would fail on the console. Well, at least fail in terms of only having a small player base and not the near 10 million that play Destiny now...

Maybe we can start a little PS Extreme destiny friends list or something. I know there are other forums for this, But I say the more networking for friends the better.
I know I come here daily to see the latest PlayStation news, be cool to see if there was a place to add Destiny friends from here too. We could use the PSX forum but it seems like a ghost town there at times. ( just thinking out loud)Thanks.

I'm still playing a couple of hours a night. Doing the grind between levels 26 and 27. Don't have any friends to raid with so mostly doing patrols, crucible and strikes.

A lot of moaning about the DLC costs. In Australia the DLC is $40 for the Destiny expansion pack.

Just looking on the store now and the COD:AW DLC season pass is $65. Christ on a bike!

Go to Google and type in "Destiny LFG". You'll find plenty of people for different activities, including raid and weekly strikes.
