October NPD: PS4 #1 Again, NBA 2K15 Tops Software List

One of these days, the Xbox One will win a month.

But it wasn't October. The NPD results for last month are in and once again, Sony's console was once again tops in the US market.

NPD Group's Liam Callahan confirmed that overall sales across hardware, new physical software and accessories were basically flat when compared to October 2013, but the current consoles are already performing better than PS3 and Xbox 360 considering the same time frame. Right now, cumulative sales for PS4 and Xbox One are "70 percent higher than the combined first year totals of Xbox 360 and PS3."

As for the top 10 games for October, NBA 2K15 took the #1 slot, followed by Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and The Evil Within. Here's the full list:

  • NBA 2K15
  • Super Smash Bros.
  • The Evil Within
  • Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
  • Destiny
  • Skylanders Trap Team
  • FIFA 15
  • Madden NFL 15
  • Middle Earth: Shadow Of Mordor
  • Minecraft

Sony's run might soon end, though, as Xbox One had a $50 price drop and Sunset Overdrive was actually #9 on the sales charts "when sorting on SKU rather than by title." Then again, the last price drop didn't let Xbox One leapfrog PS4, so...

Very nice to see Evil Within getting those tremendous sales, despite its aggregate review score. If only some were able to look past the little technial flaws to embrace its brilliance as they did with AC Unity.

Word has it Xbox One might take November. With the insane price drops and awesome bundled games I almost expect it. It seems Sony isn't trying to compete at their price yet.
The comfortable position for Sony is that they're in a position to slash the price if needed to take back monthly leadership.

Yeah $350+2 great games and a gift card is what I am seeing for most stores as a Black Friday/Weekend deal.

yea, it is sweet. I went to costco the other day and they're selling XO bundles for $339.00, like right now.

on another note: I think the Wii U will drop to third place this month or next.

I get a new xbox bundle update text several times a day, they are desperately trying to win a month. Even if they win it won't be in terms of profit.

You know it's a slow release window when NBA tops the chart.

Good to see people giving The Evil Within a chance. The game wasn't anything amazing but is going in the right direction if a sequel is ever to happen.

Wow Minecraft has become quite the money printing machine since its beginnings. I'm half interested in picking the new Borderlands on Steam, but at this rate I don't think it's going to sub $60 anytime soon.

I have been most surprised to see a Lord of the Rings game break out as something mainstreamers can enjoy and is an actually good game apparently.

I'll get it some day I think.
