New PS4 MMO Wander Tells Its Beautiful Story Without Combat

It's an MMO and it doesn't have combat. Yep, get used to it.

As revealed over at the PlayStation Blog, a new game for PlayStation 4 involves all sorts of exploration from multiple perspectives, but there's no fighting.

It's called Wander and players can play as one of several creatures. Writer and character designer Crystal Flinn said the game is the brainchild of developer Loki Davison, who wanted to create an experience that didn't focus on violence to tell a story. As he said in a statement:

"I was somewhat of a nomad for a long time. I wandered around Central Asia, Siberia, the Arctic, and Himalayas. Growing up I played a lot of MUDs (text based MMO games) and wanted to make a game that was atmospheric, relaxing, and multiplayer. Wander draws on a lot of that experience. I wanted to collaboratively explore in a game."

The game starts out with players occupying an unfamiliar form; here are your options:

  • Oren -- A walking, sentient tree (you begin the game as Oren)
  • The Griffin -- A flying creature
  • The Azertash -- A creature that can swim and breathe underwater
  • Hira -- A creature described only as "swift and agile"

Flinn says each form has "several unique and gorgeous variants" and a separate back-story. It seems like a great idea, doesn't it? Wander is slated to release in March 2015.

I love this idea. It sounds like a clean and fun adventure game I could play with my kids.

Unfortunately, I can see how there might not be a mass appeal for a game like this...

No explosions? No boobs? This is a tall order here. If you are looking to walk in the woods .... why not try that out in a game known as .... REAL LIFE!

This is definitely a must buy for me, not only as someone that greatly respects creative game design, but also as someone that absolutely adores Greek mythology, and has always wanted to see (or be) a Griffin.

Can't wait to finally be able to play and socialize as one.

I really want to give this a try. Hopefully it has lots of puzzles and stuff that you have to work with others to accomplish. It is an MMO after all :)

I'm very interested to see how this turns out but so far it looks right up my alley.

Very interesting. If The Witcher 3 is as hard and taxing as I fear it may be this will get my attention. I've always wanted a game like this. It's part of the reason why I enjoyed Skyrim so much. Once you had the best gear and a high level you were kind of a demi God and could wander around exploring with out having to cling to life every five minutes when a bear showed up.

On the other hand it did say "MMO" and "mutliplayer" Why do I have to have other people shoved in my face all the time? Is an experience all to my myself too much to ask for these days.

Isn't this essentially copying that interesting indie-MMO Wild that was shown off during Sony's e3 conference? You could essentially play as any animal including human and just wander and meet up with others creating your own story.
Not saying this is a copy because who knows how long it's been in development but Wild got shown first and sounds a lot more grand so this may struggle.

At first glance, I agree, it does look to be a lot like WiLD. I think the difference would have to come to the backstory, and how that would directly affect the gameplay. In WiLD, it sorta gives the players a 'do-what-you-want-to-do' vibe, while in Wander, the focus might be on what happened (is happening) in that world, and how (potentially) each creature would have a different perspective on the arching backstory, which then gives the player somewhat of a faint direction, rather than the grand openness that WiLD seems to embrace.

I am so glad that non-violent-centric games are finally getting their grand entrance into the next-gen scene. Games like this, WiLD, Journey, and Flower really gives me confidence that we can (and should) expect more from the games industry than the mainstream ones we've been continuously fed over the years. Not that those are bad, but I just really wish there would be more creative productions like Wander.
