Is It Even Practical For Adults To Be Multi-Console Owners?

I've been a multi-console owner since the early '90s.

I've always supported the idea because it made perfect logical sense: I want to play the best the industry has to offer and in order to do that, I always need more than one machine.

I believe that has remained true and in fact, it might still be true...for those who have a lot of time on their hands, or multiple people in the household that would take advantage of the same form of entertainment. However, for some of us, owning multiple consoles just doesn't make much practical sense any longer. See, there was a time when game release frequency was the merest fraction of what it is now; years ago, we'd wait months before seeing even one or two new games. It wasn't like the constant onslaught we see today.

On top of which, a lot of the games that released back then were junk. And while we'll always have mediocre products out there, the testing is far more stringent these days and most high-profile releases are fine. Even if you don't like them, they're not completely broken. And when I say that, don't scoff about the technical issues some games face (like Assassin's Creed Unity); when I say broken, I mean basically unplayable. So yeah, you almost had to have more than one console, unless you wanted to play the same great three games for eight months out of a year.

That's hardly the way things are now, though. I can't remember a time when my backlog had zero titles in it, and I don't have the time I used to have, either. I've got a PlayStation 4 and while I wish I had the Xbox One for Sunset Overdrive and the Wii U for Bayonetta 2, I also know I'd never get anywhere near those games, considering the backlog and the available time. Lastly, there are a lot more multiplatform games than ever before. Very few titles released today are exclusive and that really wasn't the case way back when.

I can't be the only one who has noticed this.

If I get another console it wouldn't be for myself.
I used to be a multi-console owner. Didn't matter the era or the systems, chances are, if there were two or three consoles to have, I bought them all.

Now being older, with a lot less game time on my hands, it's really extraneous to invest into more than one core platform. Maybe. Maybe someday I'll get an XO when it goes real cheap. Heck. It's already down to $349 or less as a bundle with games. In 3 years or so, I may consider getting one on the the cheap just to play through those handful of titles I know I'll want. But that's a big if, depending on what the games are and how many of them there are, and if they're of a higher priority to other games on PS4 I could already have.
But the days of owning on current consoles concurrently and supporting their various services, games, and additional accessories seems over.
Right now my play horse is with Playstation.

Try raising 2 kids and putting them through college. Work 10 hours a day and come home and spend 2 hours a day training your boy for baseball or football. Then going to their games. Same for your baby girl.

Then find time to spend with your wife and dare tell her you have to make time for gaming.

It's called life, kid. You just figuring this out?

It has NEVER been practical to have 2 machines if you have a family and life. At least not in mine.

Noob.

I'd say price is the biggest obstacle. Do you really want to spend some $400 on average to not play games? To buy a few, play one of them, and just backlog them up? if money wasn't a factor, I'd buy them all. But it is, so why bother? I got a Wii u. Working on a PS4 for Black Friday. Xbox One is not going to cut it. Only a few games I want for it. At least PS+ is good for a few games. Only had mild interest in 2 games from Gold since they started offering games with gold. Sure, some BF deals are looking good. But to spend all that money for a system with only few games right now, and no proof of anything on the horizon (and with the same games on PS4,that'd get priority), it's a waste of good money.

It's funny how the makers go on and on about how justified the price is, but in the end, that's what hurts it. PS3 in the beginning. 3DS originally, too. If the consoles were back to $150, games back to $20, would you still say no to multi consoles? I wouldn't. At least backlogging would be justified.

yeah well i think one youtube dude put is like this 90-95% of all games across all platforms are multiplate or in othe words on everything so exxclusives are what they used to be yeah and games are coming out all the time and in some cases to often most of us can't keep up cos most have work or lives and such that they don't have the time avalible to just sit and play games that much. but yeah you kinda do need to have more than one console to be able to play all games but for most people they don't play all th games unless its their job like youtubers and some guys like ben but even then they still don't doe everything and i don't think its really that possible

happy gaming

Aye, totally agree - I actually got a 360 a few years back to play Halo, and I enjoyed it, but found that having a PC, PS3 and 360 was too much, and it felt a bit wrong having a 360 for literally 10 or so games (I know there are more, but not more that I was particularly interested in chasing down), and traded it in after six months (and I'd played all the games I wanted to on it) - there are just too many games to make it make sense to have more than one console unless you _have_ to have certain franchises, and they're on more than one machine (I may do the same with an XB1 down the track, but unlike the 360, which I fully expected to keep, I"ll probably buy one, play catch-up for six months, then trade it in).

Ever since I picked up a PS3 I've really tried to get the platinum trophies for the games that I've bought. Being a full time student and working full time... reading PSXE is just about the only gaming time I have. Another console? I can't even imagine.

I've been a PS owner for home and a DS owner for portables for years now. Not neccessarily because of cost or time but because of my interests. I simply don't like whats out. I have no interest in first person action games or military shooters so that's half the industry. I recall when I had over 200 Genesis games and at least half of them got regular play (back when I was living alone, single with no kids...sigh, the good old days). Now I still have a core 10-15 PS3 games i play regulary and 2-3 on my PS4 (because the library is so one-dimensional). I have maybe 20 Wii games I have never touched also (but that's because I thought some would be better than they now look).
So for me, it's not about time. I work 8-9 hours a day, raise my 7 year old daughter (who plays games), spend time with my nineteen year old son (who plays games) and still have time for my girlfriend and family (who also play games). I don't sleep much but that's the price I choose to pay. I just wish we had more genres and variety like back in the days. I don't think the "multi-console" idea should depend on time because a good game is a good game. I still put about 5-6 hours into Skyrim and Burnout Paradise each week. Rockband 3 gets a good 3-4 hour session when I pop that in. The industry had dictated how much and what I buy by cranking out cookie-cutter clones.

This is the boat I fell into with the last generation. I still have a massive backlog of great PS3 games that I just never got to play. I've got several on my shelf, a couple still in plastic that haven't even been touched. Sure, there are games on other consoles I'd like to play, but it's just never gonna happen.

Wife + kids + house + job = very little time for games.

I joke with my wife that the first year of my retirement I'm just going to lock myself in a room and play all the great video games I've missed out on :)

Make it "not a joke". I have some 10+ PS3 RPGs I truly plan on playing when I get too old/poor to stay current on the consoles. LOL

Too many great games out there to limit myself to a single console especially when some of those games are the best the industry has to offer. I can't imagine making excuses to justify not having the opportunity to play them. I respect the single console owner, but don't envy their limited view through the window into the vast and wonderful landscape of worlds that make up this great hobby.

Remember that time I commented on your narrow worldview and you thought I was talking about how you viewed PS4?

"Making excuses to justify"

Holy hell.

We did some organizing this weekend and it is amazing to see how many games for PS3 I still have sealed and ready to play still. I already have 3 PS4 games waiting to be unwrapped and played as well. With the holiday season fast approaching, I will be getting at least 5-6 more ps4 games that will collect dust as I pick out my next game to play. 2 hours a day if I am lucky is all the time i can spare these days.
Money is not the issue, time is.

Not for me. I have a ps4 and haven't yet traded in my ps3. I haven't beaten or even touched a bunch of the free PS Plus games I got on the ps3 and since I traded in GTA V about a month and a half ago i haven't turned it on. I was able to transfer my GTA V online character to PS4 as well as my DCU online. If only i can bring over kingdoms of Amalur and Ni No Kuni, it would be awesome

Nope, not for me.
I'm self employed, going to college(Last semester!!!) and have a baby boy coming December 2nd. My PS3 is all the console I need for now.
The backlog is just insane, some games are still wrapped. Plus I'm always jumping on some great deals on PSN, many downloads still to be played.
Until Uncharted 4 comes out and the wife forces me to get an PS4(The missus loves Drake...), I'm going to catchup as much as I can :-)
