Sony And Unity Team Up To Bring "Optimized Tools" To PlayStation
The next generation will usher in impressive new technology, as everyone anticipates.
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) and Unity Technologies, provider of the Unity multiplatform engine and development tools, have announced a strategic partnership that began as of March 15.
This partnership allows SCE to offer Unity for PlayStation with optimized deployment for the PS4, PS3, PS Vita and PlayStation Mobile. Unity will utilize the same leading integrated development environment that over 1.5 million designers have already adopted. PlayStation platform development tools will start rolling out this fall, which isn't far off, of course.
Thanks to Unity, developers that hold a license agreement from SCE for the PlayStation SKDs will be able to build and implement "unrivaled entertainment experiences" for the aforementioned platforms. Unity lets game makers easily port their games to PS4, PS3, Vita and PSM without having to rewrite the code from scratch. Plus, Unity developers will be able to bring their IP to dedicated console systems like the Vita, where users can play their games with unique features like the rear touchpad, dual analog sticks, Sixaxis motion sensor, and front and rear cameras.
Unity for PlayStation lets creators make games for PSM more efficiently as well. ...that's a lot of technical talk there and I'm hoping someone out there understands it better than I. I just report on it. :) If you want more detailed information, check the PlayStation Blog.

I would not expect too darn complicated stuff built on it, the next Skyrim is not built on this engine to put it that way, but its' plenty powerful enough to be creative on and make stuff that looks pretty good.
Excellent for indie developers.

Here's an entertaining tech demo from last year that showed off the Unity 4 engine.
