PSXE Poll Update: Sony Made A Good Move Going With AMD

When it was announced that the upcoming PlayStation 4 would feature AMD tech and not Nvidia, some gamers were a little disappointed.

After all, many consider Nvidia to be a significant step up from AMD, and there were many who hoped PlayStation would stick with the supposedly better performing yet more expensive technology. However, it's also true that AMD is cheaper (which should make the consumer happy) and perhaps more accessible to developers as well.

And according to our recent poll, the vast majority of readers agree that going with the more PC-based architecture is a darn good idea. Irrational Games founder and Bioshock creator voiced the same praise this past week, when he said he liked the PS4's new setup. Given that so many really appear to love Sony's choice of AMD, the new console appears to be in good shape so far. Everyone loves that thing! And there's nothing wrong with that, of course. :)

This week, who's getting Bioshock Infinite? It has already pulled down some crazy high review scores (ours will be going up this week) and it's easily one of the most anticipated titles of 2013. Heck, it's one of the most anticipated of the entire generation.

I'm definitely passing on Bioshock Infinite. I could never really get into the Bioshock games.

You should do some research on this game, I believe you will find it vastly different then previous iterations. I am certain you will be pleasantly surprised at what you find.

I'm not much of a PC devotee, so I didn't have a preference either way. However, if the move allows Sony to price the unit more competitively then I'm all for it.

I was a little skeptical about the AMD architecture at first. After reading more information on it, I'm not as disappointed as I once was. I hear a lot of people saying that Sony is using off the shelf parts, but that's not what I read. It's a custom design made specifically for Sony's console and they're thinking of selling it for use in other applications to further cheapen manufacturing costs.

It sounds like it could still harbor some unknown potential, although it may not take as long as previous generations to tap into it.

"perhaps more accessible to developers as well" - actually that's not true. It's rather the other way around, but no biggie either way.

The way I see it their choice of chipsets has all to do with economy. They rather spread out the building budget across the entire machine making a well balanced unit, than to go for Intel and Nvidia and have to skimp in a lot on the rest. I so totally support that. Furthermore, there's plenty potential in the AMD chipsets - potential that now becomes so much more relevant to harvest. So Sony did the right thing here - it's next to indisputable.

Judging from the reviews, Bioshock Infinite seems to be every bit as fantastic as I was hoping for it to be. It even suits me fine that the best version is the PC version, cause quite frankly I've become rather unwilling to spend more money on the PS3 now that I know it's on the way out.

since when is AMD cheaper?
their flagship card is actually MORE expensive than Nvidias!
same goes for their CPUs, they have always been more expensive than intel!
anyway, the poll results are not a surprise, 99% of the people here wouldent know the difference from the 2!
might as well go to parliament and put up a poll asking who makes the better games, ND or treyarch.
AMD are almost as bad as $ony in the customer support department, refusing warranty honors, not to mention the reliability issues there constantly having with their hardware!
not to mention the drivers ALWAYS have fatal bugs in them, and there always really slow to update drivers!
hey, now i know why $ony chose them they have SO much in common!

as for bioshock, is water wet?
do cows go moo?
f*cking oath im getting infinite!
just 4 more hours to go.........

Dude, what you talk about there is just so intensively irrelevant!

Since when was it ever a question about inserting the flagship cards of *either* manufacturer into the consoles? And since when will AMD customer support handle the support of these consoles?

Even Nvidia themselves has just recently gone on record saying they could not match AMD's prices. So there is no discussion about this. AMD enabled Sony to put money also into other aspects of this machine, most notably the RAM of course, and the result is what we will enjoy in some months from now.

so reliability is irrelevant?
sweet, have fun buying a new console every few months when $ony refuses warranty honoring like AMD have become notorious for!
hell, make that every few weeks last time i bought a AMD card it went up in smoke within days!

All these fatal errors with nearly everything in your possession seems to be more due to the owner. I don't think I've heard about a single thing you've had that's lasted longer than a few months, ever. Everything from laptops to consoles, software installs to PC components seem to smoulder up the moment they enter your home.

Let's see how it goes, shall we? I am pretty sure your first PS4 will be broken within the first 8-9 months, maybe less, and I am just as sure that mine will last for at quite a few years. Wanna bet?

As long as the price reflects the changes that have been made i am just fine with the direction Sony is taking. If however they get greedy and think the consumer will shell out $500-$600 for this new and improved hardware, they will get a rude awaking from me and i suspect many others. We should know either way come July!
