Sony: Driveclub Issues Haven't Slowed PS4's Momentum

...didn't EA say the same thing about Battlefield 4?

The anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusive Driveclub had a rocky launch but PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan tells MCV that in fact, the problems haven't damaged Sony's reputation.

He says gamers understand that in a "more technically complicated" world, mistakes can happen. That being said, he is apologetic:

"We have to acknowledge that there have been problems and we're really sorry to anyone who has suffered from those issues. They shouldn't happen. But in a world that's becoming more and more technically complicated, it's getting harder to deliver stuff. That's not an excuse, because you shouldn't really launch a game before it's ready. And clearly we've made mistakes and we apologize for that."

As for whether or not the Driveclub issues have slowed the PS4's momentum, and as far as Sony's reputation is concerned, Ryan said:

"Has it dampened our momentum? No. Has it damaged our reputation? I don't think so. People understand that mistakes do get made so as long as you apologize and make them right. That's the main thing."

Driveclub launched with plenty of technical difficulties and developer Evolution Studios even had to take it offline for a while. It is mostly fixed now, though, which is in contrast to the aforementioned Battlefield 4, which took many months to repair. Maybe it isn't a fair comparison but as Ryan added, if you make a mistake "you should fess up to it."

Still very much broken. The only thing that works is leaderboards. I'm pretty sure most people that bought the game was also looking forward into actual club interaction and competition, not just a grind fest to see who can rack up the most fame.

This game will be fixed when online is consistent and challenge mode is working. Right now it's basically just an offline single player game which is NOT what they emphasized. The offline portion does work well tho. It's not a buggy game or anything like AC, but DC like BF4 is more about online competition and interaction and if that part doesn't work then we can't say it's fixed for the most part, so it's a fair comparison imo. There was never really a problem for the single player in DC. I don't know about BF4.

Forgot to add that I agree DCs trouble had little effect on Ps4 momentum, but Evolution studios... Oooooh not so good. Poor them. I hope they can turn it around. Seriously, myself included, a lot of people friends have given up on the game and left the more patient ones like me alone in a club lol. This is what frustrates me. Before my friends and was pumped up for competition and club stuff but not so much anymore. When all is working, including the app and weather or whatever it'll be too late. It doesn't help that there are many other games this fall so patience is not going to go far with most.

In my opinion the game works well and is a marked improvement over the release. I love playing as part of a club and contributing/benefiting from this and it does bring quite a lot to the game. Would have been nice to have it from the beginning though. Gameplay is superb and a game I have really enjoyed playing.

Challeges are working now! Apart from the online problems, the core racing gameplay is awesome! Love the game!

Well, Sony aren't going to say it has hurt their rep unless it's _really_ bad, and while DC has had it's issues, many online-focussed games have problems with launch, so I think they're PRing over the top of it.

For me, personally, I'm cool with it - online games sometimes have trouble at launch, this is one of them. Same reason I don't think less of MS or 343 for Halo:MCC's poor online launch. But for less patient or understanding folk, I have no doubt they'll have this as a bee in their bonnet for a while.

As an aside - problems with online are the big reason I never want an online-only console. Electricity, which has been standard a long time still goes out, and the provision of electricity is a lot more straightforward than online gaming/service provision. Until online is _better_ than electricity, then I want offline options in general. Ambitious online games that break are fine if I can go off and play Shadow of Mordor instead, but if they're the only option, when they break there goes your hobby!

Really...he doesn't think this has damaged their reputation?

1. Major delay with little information to consumers.
2. Launch product insufficient.
3. What was promised to PS+ members still not available.

No, this hasn't affected Devolution Studios at all.

I'm still really enjoying the single player aspect. Occasionally I go online and it works okay.
I'm just annoyed by how competitors race. People will knock you off the road any chance they get. So driving the best and driving the best under defensive conditions are two differnt things. The penalty system isn't sensitive enough to stop people from doing it.
