Activision Shows Us What's Possible With Next-Gen Hardware

The next generation of video game hardware could deliver mind-blowing graphics. And here's an encouraging example of what to expect.

During Activision's GDC panel, technical director Jorge Jimenez gave gamers a peek at what our virtual characters could look like in the near future.

All the screenshots are pretty damn impressive, and the tech demo also looks great; check it out below. Jimenez said that these ultra-realistic characters should lend the stories a greater emotional element, and the images we see here are "the result of years of work." Right now, these have nothing to do with an actual game; they're more about giving you an idea of the future. And that future isn't far off, as the PlayStation 4 is slated to launch this holiday season, with Microsoft's console expected around the same time.

Here's hoping such great technology is indeed used for telling fantastic stories, and not just giving us pretty pictures.

Right. Usually these early tech demos appear better in final form.

That was really great.

I really couldn't tell the difference at first, not till he opened his mouth lol.

I can't wait to see this kind of graphics in actual gameplay.

Just found something interesting:

http://www.kotaku.com.au/2013/03/these-computer-graphics-are-so-incredible-its-kind-of-creepy/

Check out that video at the 8:45 mark.

It's the exact same guy....

And that is using the next-gen Titan graphics card.

Alright, now I'm confuse.

Is this a next gen console tech, or a next gen state of the art GPU (Titan) tech.?

And if Nvidia used the same guy in their conference without any mention of Activision, is it really Activision's property?

Haha, Activision looked at Quantic Dream's tech demo for PS4 and said "We gotta make something that looks that good even if it has nothing to do with what we are going to be able to put out. It will make us seem relevant even though our products are aging."

That dude does look top notch, if a bit put together by silly putty facial muscles.

I thought for a second with each blink would have lead up to a killstreak bonus. I was wrong.

I saw an image of that head being blown off as it goes on about parfait. It's because I saw that it was an activision demo.

the teeth were better in the tech demo of the kotaku link, but as the guy was talking about "creepiness" ... the frozen fruit and the screaming thing were both pretty creepy.

But they wont use this tech for their next Call of Duty game no. They will use that "porche" of an engine that has powered all the CoD games since CoD 2 ;)

On a less sarcastic note I hope that there new engine is capable of this. I don't like Call of Duty but I hope that they upgrade that engine to something like this.
