Sony: PlayStation Is The "Natural Home" Of Street Fighter

As you know by now, the upcoming Street Fighter V will only be available on PlayStation 4 and PC.

Now, PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara has commented on this fresh exclusive status (as in, no Xbox or Nintendo platforms supported).

As he told IGN, he wasn't involved in forging this deal with Capcom, but he does believe PlayStation is the "natural home" for the Street Fighter series:

"I wasn't involved, so how it came about I can't comment on, but I think it's another fantastic example of how our heritage provides some fantastic opportunities not just to reminisce but to look forward as well.

Obviously it's a classic from earlier PlayStation days, but now it's being reintroduced for the PS4 era. It was a huge hit on PlayStation, so I guess you could say Street Fighter's natural home is on PlayStation. Now, I'm delighted that's going to happen again in this cycle."

We don't have a launch date yet for SFV but it has already sparked quite the controversy. Some believe it really shouldn't have missed other platforms, while others think it isn't the best third-party exclusive Sony could've secured. Eh, you can't satisfy anyone these days.

ugh. I just don't like those comments. Pretty sure that's more or less what Ubisoft said when Splinter Cell Conviction was locked down to Xbox 360.

I didn't think Sony would play it dirty like MS does. I'd like to believe there's still at least some kind of logical reason why this played out as it has. I'm somewhat wondering if Sony may be involved in providing arcade hardware for the game, or something of that sort, or helped to fund the creation of a game that wasn't planned in the first place.

If I was really idealistic I would turn my nose up and say I'll only get this game for PC, where's it's both free online and I don't have to support these sort of platform rivalries with my dollar. Because I feel like in the end all it does it makes gamers buy more consoles. ie a XO and a PS4. Two platforms. Two subscription plans and tons of accessories etc.
But I can't take videogame marketing THAT seriously so I'll just buy it for whatever I feel like.

There's a difference between paying for development and paying to keep games off other consoles which is exactly what MS did in japan at the start of the 7th gen with the jrpg's....just to create consumer confusion...thats dirty!!

I'm glad Sony did this. We would likely get another "upgrade" to SFIV had Sony not offered to help fund SFV.

I don't see the problem, Street fighter had the most success and sales on Playstation (SF2, SF alpha 1, 2, 3, EX ...) and that's the PS consoles that definitely made the Street fighter names in the memory (and of course the arcades)

VictorDeLeon:

> Street fighter had the most success and sales on Playstation (SF2, SF alpha 1, 2, 3, EX ...)

This is factually incorrect, as SF's biggest sales have come from the SNES versions (6.3, 4.1 and 2 million for SF2:WW, SF2:HF and SSF2, respectively). Only SFIV has sales comparable to those, and they're split up amongst PS3 and X360.

Concerning this story, I heard that it was *Capcom* who went to Sony, not the other way around. Maybe they wanted cross-platform play and knew that Sony would agree to it while Microsoft won't allow it. Maybe they actually went to both but Sony made them a better offer. Who knows?

But what I DO know is that, while it sucks for Xbone-only fans, this is better for Street Fighter players in the long term - only one console platform to worry about (no more having to buy two sticks/dual mod sticks) and one unified base (they may have to watch out for cheating from PC though).

There was a time when SF home was the Snes and I thought the same was going to happen with the N64, oh boy it really sucked to have a N64 and expect RPG's and fighting games to come plus I was always envious of the PlayStation kids getting also legendary games like Resident Evil, Castlevania Symphony of the Night and Silent Hill.

The N64 era was my worst era of gaming that actually made me quit on Nintendo and never try one of their consoles in years (I later only bought the portables for ''Metroidvanias''), so yes I can't forget those days and still the Capcom fighting games iteration on the Nintendo Systems are minor, MS it's always about getting exclusivity of the genres that sell more, so I don't have any doubt at all that they would chose Dead Rising over SF because Zombies are still a hot thing LOL, Sony rightfully took the ball with SF and the only people hating are the unnatural people that for whatever the reason play fighting games on MS systems.

PS4 is pretty much the console to own as far as fighting games go. First Guilty Gear Xrd, then USFIV port and now SFV. Wouldn't be surprised if the next Blazblue is PS4 exclusive too like Chrono Phantasma was for the PS3.

To those thinking this was a dirty tactic, it wasn't. Ono said a year ago that there was pretty much no future for SFV because he didn't have the finances or staff to fund it. SONY has given them a lifeline which has allowed Ono to create the game just like Nintendo did with Bayonetta 2.

I'm no gimp to brand loyalty but SONY is the prime reason we're even getting another Street Fighter, and as an SF fan i am greatful for it. It also doesn't help that X1 don't do cross-platform like PS4 is going to do with PC when this game releases.

Adding to that though, because this is SONY funded, that means that any future versions of the game whether it's mega, ultra, hyper or super turbo versions will also remain exclusive too.

I am looking forward to seeing what characters they're going to add. Ryu and Chun-Li are there, Ken, Blanka and all the other old schoolers are pretty much givens but who goes or stays from the Alpha and Third Strike series? Should be interesting.

Can any of you cite this info about Sony's "help" in all of this. Where's the news stories to back this up?
I'd like to believe it but if there's no evidence then you're just dreaming it up and believing yourself as if it's true.

... Is this like a form of guilt or doubt trying to reassure itself?

I'm trying to find the link but in the mean time I do know Ono stated Capcom wouldn't front the cash for a new entry so it stands to reason Sony did since were getting a new entry. I'll post the link once I find it.

Thanks, Jawknee. I read that too. But that's not evidence of half of what's been said here.

Deductively a person can't look at it as "Ono said there isnt enough cash to create SFV right now"
and then weeks or months later Sony announces SFV as an exclusive as proof of anything.

The business world changes. What about this scenario? Ono states that there isn't enough money, and then a Capcom exec decides "you know, that SFIV game was real popular, maybe we should cancel RE Some-crappy-game, and green light SFV instead." or what if this or what if that?

And if this is the case, why hasn't anyone stated it, as it was for Bayonetta 2?

There's a whole lot that could have gone on and here everyone is stating PURE speculation as fact.

...and like I want Sony helping with SFV (maybe outside of actual gameplay but EVERY game receives support from it's parent platform provider so why say it?).. as if Capcom needs Sony's help with that. I'm sure Shoryuken would be going ape crap right now if that were true.

"Is this like a form of guilt or doubt trying to reassure itself?"

It was mentioned several times on Eventhubs so stop being weird and dramatic. Dreaming? Form of guilt or doubt? What's wrong with you? I'm just a neutral that's happy to see Street Fighter back in the game, couldn't care less where they put it.

I will post some links later from the various sources i read this from when i feel bothered. Not wasting my time finding links for people who can't branch out for the info themselves. Just because the news isn't on PSXExtremes headline page doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

weak. and I can't help you with your comprehension. think about it a little more I guess.

sure. go find those links of other guys dreaming stuff up and believing it.. you know? just like you guys are. the reason no one else of credibility is reporting it is because those facts don't exist.

hehe Sony the savior of SF. were it not for Sony we'd forever be stuck with SFIV.

I don't think of Sony when I think of Street Fighter. I think of Nintendo. Some of the best games in the franchise were best played on the SNES. That said, of the two sides of the same coin the PS4 is the better choice. The Xbone controller is garbage for fighting games. That D Pad is crap. Sony has alway made a better D Pad for fighters.

Yea I remember I would always bring my SNES to by friends house to play Street Fighter II Turbo because he only had the Sega version of SF. That crappy version where you had to press the select button in the middle of a match to switch between kicks and punches.

Hexen it was because when Street Fighter made it BIG it made it big with Street Fighter II. That was the fighting game that wrote the book on 2D fighting games back then. So many spin-offs and would-be games happened as a result of that single game.
During the PS era Street Fighter, while existed, never had that prime time excitement like it had with SNES. SFIV was the first real resurgence for the series. So much so it basically made what was old new again and now 3D fighters are less popular.

I agree with everything you said Temjin. The arcade machines,Snes and Genesis ports were all reasons why it got so big. It's just that Jawknee has a notorious habit here of only crediting Nintendo for everything,it's cool if he doesn't like Sega but at least give them a little bit of credit.

Oh pipe down Hexen. Who cares if I think of Nintendo when I think of Street Fighter? I grew up playing Street Fighter on SNES and arcade machines. No need to get butt hurt every time I mention Nintendo. Makes you look petty. I give no credit to Sega because Street Fighter II sucked on the 3 button limited genesis. Don't like that? Too bad. At the time, as Temji said, when SF blew up. SFII, Turbo and SSFII were best played on arcade or NINTENDO.

I own both consoles so I will still be able to play all of these "exclusive" 3rd party games. That said, I do think that these deals(SFV, Tomb Raider) only HURT gamers and are pretty sh*tty.

I mean the previous iterations (Tomb Raider reboot, SF4...and all of its sequels) were released on both consoles. So if I own an Xbox One, I'd be able to play the sequel regardless, and likewise for PS4 and SF5. So how does this help console owners? Answer: it doesn't.

Granted it can be argued that neither of these games wouldve been made (remember the whole Square Enix debacle in calling the TR reboot a failure because of insane expectations?) if not for the help of MS, Sony, but I imagine much of those details will never truly be publically known.

Sigh...

how would keeping TR forever off of PS4 make amends to the fighting community on Xbox?

no, this thought worries me. there's one fighting franchise that's been very Xbox since that console brand's inception. It's called DOA. I'd just hate to have that one locked back down. That, or Ninja Gaiden.

They can have Soul Calibur. I can live without that franchise.
