Sony On PlayStation 4 Future: "The Best Is Yet To Come"
The PlayStation 4 is selling well and its first year has been a rip-roaring success...at least from a console war perspective.
But in terms of available software and games that show off the new system's power, the best days are yet to come. Sony UK boss Fergal Gara agrees with that assessment; in a recent IGN interview, he said the defining titles aren't yet here:
"I really believe it's year two when you tend to see those titles come through that start to define the whole generation. The best is yet to come on PS4. We've seen a brilliant start with the mega-franchises, like the FIFAs, Call of Duties, and the Assassin's Creeds, but we've also seen some strong new IPs launch--the likes of Destiny and Watch Dogs. But I think that the ones that are truly to define the generation are probably still to come, to be honest."
Gara referenced past PlayStation consoles as well. For instance, he reminds us that the original PlayStation console didn't get its first "truly memorable" game until 1996, after the system had been available for nearly two years. He added that it takes "some time for a platform to mature and for developers to make the best of it." Well, sure. Look at the end of the PS1, PS2 and PS3 life cycles; remember games like God of War and The Last Of Us?
