Final Fantasy XV: Attack Combos, MP Not Used For Magic

Role-playing fanatics and long-time Final Fantasy fans, you might want to look away.

Kotaku has posted up a bunch of Final Fantasy XV gameplay details courtesy of director Hajime Tabata. Did you know that MP won't be used for magic? Yeah, that's right.

The MP gauge will actually be used for special assault moves, as Tabata said:

"The magic [in Final Fantasy XV] is a little unique and isn't your standard 'use MP to cast' model. MP is used for special actions like using your sword to warp or to evade attacks. For evasion, by keeping the button pressed, you can continuously dodge attacks, but it will also continuously drain your MP."

Sure, that sounds like an RPG, right? No? Then how about this: The basic combat will have players pressing an attack button over and over, or holding it down, so the character will execute a combo. Then there are united attacks, with party members teaming up for more devastating assaults and it sounds like it's going to be timing-oriented. Lastly, there will be parrying and counters:

"Parrying is an action where you time it to match an enemy's attack. It's an advanced technique with a risk of failure."

Grand. I didn't know Square Enix was working on the new Devil May Cry. I hope they take some cues from Ninja Theory and Capcom, although it appears as if S-E doesn't need any extra help. They've obviously got the action mold down cold...for a Final Fantasy game.

I don't get why lots of people complain about this. It's sounds like a good combat system, definitely better than XIII's change paradigms every minute, spamming x.

First FF where you can probably come out unscathed without one hit ko opponents, granted we take the limited dodging and time the parrying seriously.

But yeah it's not like it's any different than pressing x continuously on a move. The real shine of turn based combat imo is when the battle is tough, mainly bosses or when you're low level in the beginning. When it gets easy you're really doing nothing than pressing x on your favorite or main attack move and watching a mini cutscene. Same with paradigims. On boss fights the spamming is slowed down to crucial timing of using the correct paradigms.

What I'm trying to say is even if the gameplay seems simple, there can still be tough moments in the game where you can't just spam and need to think strategically. It seems a lot of people here just assume it's going to be spamming galore all the way through. The spamming part in every rpg for me, no matter the gameplay is always the grinding. The boss fights or other tough battles as always require more thoughts and careful actions.

I assume you're ok with all the changes? Thats cool. But why slap the Final Fantasy name on the game? If they wanted to make a action game, why couldn't S-E just create a new I.P. and keep FF the same? Or atleast not drastically change the gameplay as much as they did.

I also find it a funny coincidence that as the last few entries has increased the action, the storytelling has slowly diminished.

A good combat system for some new generic action game, not Final Fantasy the epic and grand adventure frought with long strategized battles of wits via command.

Th game still has magic and summons, I don't see this as a matter for concern. I heard apparently Noctus is the only one who can use it too, which sounds great, I loved how I Final Fantasy IX each character had their own unique abilities and style.

What I love from the preview is the pure sense of adventure the game seems to be presenting. I love the notion of the road trip and how the game has you rest at hotels and campfires in order to level up from your training. I think they're rlly implementing a solid time structure within the game and fleshed out sense of realism in the sense that the character are people and not just static game characters, they will get tired and need the rest. But also the structure of the road trip and exploring the world in the car while avoid military threat seems like an interesting one, I can't wait to follow the adventure, which is the key experience I yearn for in JRPGs and this game even with its action packed combat seems to really offer that.

This game offers NOTHING even remotely close to anything resembling a JRPG, this is a ACTION game pure and simple, FF as a series is dead, the game will flop just like FFXIII-2 and 3 did

It's a JRPG with action combat... I don't see why that still dismisses it from the JRPG genre, Kingdom Hearts is the same and it's clearly a JRPG. XV still will have menus, so it wont feel like Devil May Cry. But more important than the combat system, the game is proving to flourish with a real sense of adventure, I think the set up of having the band of renegades explore the land with their car was the story escalates through a road trip style adventure has tremendous potential. I genuinely haven't seen anything so far to me discouraged, in fact since the game has been renamed to XV it has never looked better, I thought the initial trailer for Versus XIII looked silly with Noctus being this over powered immortal demon child, but ever since we've seen more with XV and seen the party all together It looks far more humane than before. I'm really all for this, it looks far more interesting than Type-0 HD which I still think looks kind of immature, but time will tell when I get to play both in March.

I knew XV was going to be like this ever since i saw the first gameplay trailer. This is it fellow brothers, FF is truely, officially dead as we've known it. I'm done with S-E permanently, effective immediately.

Seems like a very interesting battle system. Love that Square dares to push past the paradigms (pun kinda intended) and bring battlefields that feel real and not limited to characters staring at each other or circling each other waiting for attacks to load. Hell, it's almost as if someone at Square looked at the calender and saw it wasn't the 90's.

Right. The idea of what Final Fantasy "should be" didn't come from the series' heyday in the 90's and very early 2000's. Must have been all those FFs released after that. lol.

Ben and what makes you qualified to talk for all final fantasy fans? The buzz surrounding this title is very positive from fans and newcomers a like. To be honest with your comments and opinions you look no better than kid.

Some of the best jrpgs are action oriented, learn to let go man. This game looks fantastic.

SayWord: If you honestly think the "buzz" is positive for this game, you need to visit some places where Final Fantasy fans actually go.

I can speak for all FF fans, I got the qualifications. And I say we went from RPG to "having RPG elements" which isn't what the original fanbase wants and so isn't what will succeed. Look at the sales for FFX (on one console) versus the sales for any of the XIII games on 2 consoles. All 3 of them didn't sell as much as FFX. These moves are game killers.

That said, this wasn't supposed to be a numbered entry it was sposeda be like a Dirge of Cerberus so we should take it with a grain of salt.

@Ben Dutka: let's just wait and see when FFXV comes out. Yeah, I miss the FF style of gameplay from the 90s, but this new gameplay style of FFXV intrigues me. I just hope that the gameplay of FFXV will be addictive enough for me to finish the game. ^_^

FFXIII already did that. I wouldn't be buying this if it was made by those same idiots who dropped that terrible trilogy on us. This is a Testuya Nomura game and the director who took over after he left the project to focus on KH3 full time is the same director from Crisis Core. Which was a pretty great "action" RPG. I'm not worried about this how this will turn out.

I'm tired of seeing this. Why continue degrading a game that was never supposed to be a traditional turn based for combat? This is the wrong game to be continuously criticizing about the gameplay. From day one goodness, we knew the gameplay wasn't going to be traditional. Wow.

Wait for the next main FF title. Even if it has a low chance of being something we want traditionally at least we don't have an idea of what the gameplay will be like rather than continuing to false hope silly about FFXV.

What we should be concern about this game is everything else that makes the game Final Fantasy; Magic, summons, story, exploration, side quests, music, airships or whatever.

yea, it's because it bares the name FFXV. A franchise that was of a specific genre for more than 10 games. A franchise can amass a lot of followers in that time. Gamers like their favorite games to play a certain way. Sure. Some franchises "reboot" into something else when they have to. But that's just it. When they have to. They have to because there's not many followers anyway.
Final Fantasy didn't have to. They ignored "if it's not broke don't fix it" or "leave well enough alone" and they tried to fix it and wouldn't leave it's design alone. They had a healthy base of followers. Even critics were happy. They just decided to pay no attention to any of that.

Many companies do just fine by offering the same fundamentals and remixing them for their fans. Sometimes they offer spin-offs to provide more breadth to their fanbase. Polyphony does it. Nintendo does it. McDonalds does it. Street Fighter does it. The fans love it.

Americans watch NFL football year in and year out. They don't want new rules or two footballs on the field, or ditching the huddle, or something. They want the game they know.

So I finally start getting into turn-based JRPGs in the last 5 years or so, only to watch their decline.

Years ago I would think this is great news, as I loved action anything. But as I've gotten older I've come to appreciate the methodical side of turn-based, the details, the fine-tuning aspects. I used to think characters were standing there, taking hits for no reason, since I had no patience for waiting back then.

I guess it hurts you guys more than it hurts me, but I'm still feeling it, as all I look forward to are turn-based gems. Sure I could play a strategy game, but it's not quite the same; not all the time.

To think, FFVII was the first RPG I ever completed. I just hope SE can turn themselves around before they disappear as a company. Even the mighty fall...

If you can stand the old tech and graphics PSN has a trove of classic PSX turn-based jRPGs that work with your PS3 and Vita.
In the last few years I've played through FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, Suikoden, and I'm finishing up on Xenogears on my PSP/Vita alone.
I plan to hit up Suikoden II once I'm done with Xenogears.
I play these games on the side from my other games, usually on a handheld. They're easy to pick up and play and the Vita's hold function allows you to stop the game even without saving. Just slap on some headphones and you can zone out and relax.

Yeah, that's pretty much the route I've been considering. The graphics don't bother me at all, and the PSP actually enhances them a bit. This is great, as I hadn't used my PSP until this past week, and now I have a much bigger reason to use it, ditto for my PSTV.

I definitely need to scoop up Xenogears as well. I hear nothing but good things. Oddly enough, these are games I've always heard about since their release, so name-wise I know them. It also helps me work my way through my PS1 backlog.

If you have any other recommendations, I'm all 'ears'.

These other notable franchises that are well worth checking out (I've either played or know about) come to mind

Lunar (particularly Eternal Blue)
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Lost Odyssey
Dragon Quest
I liked Phantasy Star II & III
Xenosaga
Skies of Arcadia (played some. has a good rep)
FFIV Complete Edition (psp)
Suikoden II caries the rep of being one of the greatest jRPG's of all time. I'm hitting that one up next.

I don't see what the problem here is. Final Fantasy with each entry they have tried to make the combat faster, thats what the ATB system was for in FF7 8 and 9. 10 took things back a bit, and 12 forward towards more action again.

There are so many JRPGs that are considered RPGs that have combat that is incredbily fast paced and action based. Eternal Sonata, Star Ocean, all the Tales games etc.

These games were still considered JRPGs even though they all have really fast combat and some of them like some of the tales games play like fighting games.

The only difference is that all those games have separate battle screens than the world map.

I really don't see the big deal, yes I loved the old FF games, FF9 is probably my favourite FF title and one of my favourite turn based games of all time. But Final Fantasy is allowed to evolve. This is a Nomura game, he makes great games and if it has all the other stuff that the old FF games had in them, like mini games, side quests, ultima weapons, good music etc, then I'm totally fine with this direction.
