PS4 Becomes Fastest-Selling PlayStation Console In History

We knew PlayStation 4 had topped 18.5 million worldwide.

But we weren't quite sure what it all meant, until now.

Sony tells GameSpot that their new console has become the fastest-selling machine in PlayStation history. Yep, even faster than the PS2. Said a Sony Computer Entertainment America spokesperson:

"We are humbled by this success and want to thank gamers worldwide for helping us achieve holiday sales of more than 4.1 million across 123 countries and regions. We are looking forward to another momentous year in 2015 and bringing an epic line up of titles to PlayStation fans around the world."

In contrasting news, the December NPD results show that Xbox One took the sales crown in the U.S. last month. Don't forget that Microsoft dropped the price of their system by $50 and offered several attractive holiday bundles.

We'll have to see what happens in 2015 and beyond!

MS has made the XO standard now at $350.

Seems likely Sony will respond in kind soon.

Sony's current sales figures do not suggest that will be happening.

Companies respond to sales (or lack thereof), not what their competition is doing.

Unless you're Nintendo, in which case you do nothing. OOOHHH, cheap shot! Sorry Nintendo, I still love you though. :)

The way I see it, the biggest threat to console gaming as we know it today is streaming services. Once that is good enough, I don't see why people should sit with a dedicated gaming machine under their TV sets.

Much like movie/tv streaming, no reason to buy a DVD player then.

Beam,
That's going to be some time in the future. Even a developed country like the U.S, doesn't have fast enough broadband in many areas to provide the kind of low latency that would be needed. When you're talking about multiplayer shooters or fight games, ping is king. I'm not saying that it won't happen, but consoles are here for the forseeable future.

The US is the largest consumer market in the world. It also has one of the worst broadband possibilities in the developed world with not nearly enough coverage.

We in NA are still a good couple decades away from that. Plus, I think most console gamers aren't interested in playing on a computer screen, and most people don't have strong enough wi-fi to stream 1080p high quality games even if they are lucky enough to live in an area with good internet. Most people don't have lan connected near their tv's.
