Third-Party Devs Surprised By PS4's 8GB Of RAM Announcement

Here's an interesting fact you might not know- It appears that many third-party developers were surprised when Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 would have 8GB of RAM.

According to what Just Add Water CEO Stuart Gilray told Videogamer, Sony initially delivered devkits that had only 4GB of memory, which Gilray said his team responded to with, "Yeah, 4GH, awesome, can't wait."

But it wasn't until later, specifically during the PlayStation Meeting when Sony officially unveiled the PS4, that most third-party devs got the truth: There will be 8GB of GDDR5 memory and Gilray (and others) are big fans of that:

"It's a fantastic amount of memory, especially DDR5 memory, because it's so fast you don't have to have everything there at once. You can swap it in and out instantly, effectively. But when they said 8GB it was like, 'Ooookay.'"

Gilray added that Sony has "ring-fenced" memory for system functions away from the memory used by games. This means that gamers won't have to quit the game to access the XMB on the PS4; currently on the PS3, you have to quit if you want to do anything on the XMB. Yes, developers certainly seem satisfied with what the PS4 has to offer, wouldn't you say?

The older rumors of the ps4 tech all had 4GB of GDR5 ram, while the xbox rumors were 8GB of GDR3 ram. People were already debating whether already debating which one was better (4gb of GDR5 vs 8gb of GDR3).

I guess sony decided to save us a lot of fan boy wars and be the best by just randomly doubling the ram! Thats quite a improvement. Hopefully we won't see more expensive hardware because of it. and I wonder if the xbox will change to GDR5.

You would think Microsoft would have to change to GDDR5. Measuring sticks are huge in the console wars. There will be gamers that will buy a console in the next gen only if it's the best most powerful console. Most will show brand loyalty though.

Far too late for MS to change something like that without screwing over developers and themselves.

I'm sure it was to prevent Microsoft from catching wind of that. Now Microsoft is probably scrambling to make some changes.

Party chat's a bit of a dead issue - it's on Vita, it'll be on the PS4 ;).

During the PS4 event Sony said you will be able to talk to your friends even if they are playing a different game. I would say that confirms party chat.

The most highlighted feature of the PS4 (Great Games are a given) is SOCIAL connections and communications. How does the conclusion that there would be a need for Sony to make excuses for "NO" party chat come into play? It seems many people "CAN'T WAIT" to see how Sony or Microsoft for that matter may or may not FcuK up the next generation. I guess it is not just about entertainment anymore is It?

Of course developers are happy with the RAM increase over the PS3. Once the PS4 versions of lets say Uncharted, Gran Turismo (and others) start coming out, I am 100% positive we all will be too.

I can understand that ditching the hardware that was extremely hard to work with was a must to make it easier for people to develop for, but why couldn't they of just made a new and improved cell processor? Having a unique cpu is what made the PS3 so much better than the rest, in my opinion. As for Gaikai, I will wait and see how the service handles fees or if it's simply free.

That's kind of weird. I will acknowledge the fact that having a *Cell* processor gave it an exotic feeling but it's totally not worth it to push technology that's too different when you don't own most of the market :(

The cell was a great chip but unfortunately it didn't come with a manual XD. And anyway a GPU is WAY faster than any CPU so instead of having an alien processor I would rather have them invest in a better GPU (graphic card) and that awesome 8GB GDDR5 memory! That was an awesome move.

It sounds like Sony were playing very strategically with this. It does two things - it means launch games won't take advantage of all 8GBs of RAM (not fully, at least), and it means MS will be caught on the back foot (which they undoubtedly are at the moment - they surely don't want the negative confusion surrounding the Xbox that's currently prevailing). This means a tactical advantage in mindshare over Xbox now, and more of a curve in terms of game visuals on the PS4 as devs are able to design with 8GB rather than 4GB in mind. Clever work on their part :).

Don't expect games to take full advantage of that RAM for ages.

Most PC games don't even use that much.

Yeah Akuma07 on that note,

I wonder how much of the RAM is dedicated to the system itself. Maybe 1GB? Also, the main reason PC games don't take that much is because most PCs have 4gb of random RAM... DDR-DDR2-DDR3... Plus so many graphics cards lol. I guess Devs stay on the safe side and limit the texture resolutions so that a game will work pretty good on any machine.

Now with games optimized for that 8giga! That's going to be a different story :D Viewing distance and textures should be through the roof :D We really will get close to CG quality. Can't wait!

Also, that is good news to PC gamers! Consoles won't be holding the PC down for some time! Multi-platform games will now be developed considering 8giga of ram instead of the meager 512mb of the 360 and PS3 :D

it was obvious the ps4 was going to have 8GB of memory, it would of been suicide to go up against the next xbox with half the available memory.
i just hope this holding back on third parties wont hurt the launch titles.
if they had kept recent builds in house, wouldent that mean third party developers wont be as far off as what first parties will?
the ps4 is betting the house on third party games, if watch dogs, AC4, ect, ect, turn out to be inferior there in serious trouble!

I think that Sony HAD to ship dev kits with only 4GB of RAM so that rumors couldn't get leaked about any specs that would be remotely close to launch specs, that way Sony made it so that Microsoft couldn't steal its thunder before the Meeting.

Sony almost had to go with x86 over cell, just because most game devs use it to make pc and xbox games, so to save them from having to program a game from scratch to make it work with cell, Sony made the best decision ever! + if devs are happy gamers will also be happy...better games, less time to program, less xbox exclusives, and best of all Bungie...

We knew this was a last minute thing back when it was revealed since the specs of the most recently released dev kit was leaked in January.

Cell was a poor CPU for the PS3, it and the architectural nightmare that came with it caused a **** load of problems and held a console that was supposed to be a "year newer" back greatly. Sony and Krazy Ken Kutaragi tried to repeat what they did with the PS2 and it blew up in their faces. If Sony didn't blow all that money in R&D on Cell they could have went with something cheaper, simpler and possibly produced a console that blew away the XB360 along with being easy to work with to boot and in return perhaps they wouldn't have struggled so badly this generation and developers/publishers would have saved a lot of money as well.

The PS4 is a "god send" for developers this time around and will probably be so for Sony unless they do something incredibly boneheaded to screw it up.
