Confirmed: The Witcher 3 PS4 Outperforms Xbox One Version

Once again, a high-profile multiplatform game performs just a bit better on PlayStation 4.

We'd heard evidence that the PS4 version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt would have a higher resolution as compared to the Xbox One version. Now, developer CD Projekt Red has confirmed the facts.

German website Gamestar was the first to report on these details, and then GameSpot followed up with the studio to confirm: 1080p/30fps for Sony's console; 900p/30fps on Xbox One. Last year, it was rumored that the PS4 iteration ran at 900p/30fps, while the Xbox One version operated at 720p/30fps. Well, the actual numbers are slightly different but the gap is about the same.

CD Projekt Red has said in the past that they've nearly maxed out the new consoles with their ambitious project. That's both good news and bad, right? I mean, if a team even can max out these systems so early on in a new generation, well...

Anyway, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be ready to go on May 19 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Awesome. Now we just need to hope the performance stays consistent.

Expect they managed to 'max out' the performance of the systems as they are used to programming x86 architecture from their previous games on pc. Their programmers are used to it.

New game systems aren't supposed to be so easy to max out; they're supposed to have new, more powerful hardware that most developers haven't worked with. This allows for a steady progression of quality throughout a generation, in my estimation. It's very common in PlayStation land, though maybe not with the PS4.

Edit: @Broady

It's going to happen with the PS4. considering that it's a single platform/hardware configuration, it'll take time to iron out most of the kinks and get the power going.

Not to mention that the SDK will inevitably be revised to optimize gaming output and background resources.

Unlike a PC, the unified memory and ESRAM introduce new configurations to modern hardware. Not sure how anyone will just magically max this out. Now a game engine *may* max out the hardware, but that doesn't imply it's not causing restrictions that can be freed up.

Ahhhhh, the good ole fashion claim of triumph over software. I find it unlikely. RedEngine 3 still hasn't fully unveiled the filter processes used which can constitute for some unwieldy resource usage. Bokeh filter type and pattern size, HDR lighting, and tessellation can make over a 30% frame reduction. While red engine 3 seems far more x64 capable, it's still a new engine that can pose weaknesses.

Regardless, here's to hoping it's a great game. I like the direction this game has headed towards.

i doubt that actually maxed out the PS4.. every ambitious game is supposedly pushing a console to the limits.. until the next game from a different developers comes out and says the same thing
