Sony On PS4 Reveal: There's A Reason We Showed Knack First

Okay, so the most anticipated title for the PlayStation 4 launch is a first-person shooter, Killzone: Shadow Fall.

But Sony has never been all about FPSs, as their long line of PlayStation exclusives proves. That isn't going to change in the next generation, either.

In fact, according to what Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida told Edge, there was a reason his company displayed Knack first during the PS4 unveiling at the PlayStation Meeting. They did that specifically for the purpose of proving that the new console won't be all about action and shooter games:

"It was pretty intentional. We were like yeah we hate to see all the PS4 games being FPS or action-adventure or very photorealistic, you know big-budget blockbuster games. And you know people like these games, but these are not the only kinds of games that people can have fun with."

...almost the biggest message that we wanted to send in preparing for the event as well as in designing PS4 was...we at Sony and we at Sony Computer Entertainment, it's just natural for us to enhance the core technology and performance of the hardware, but it’s not the hardware that is the biggest focus."

There are other games on tap for the PS4 this year, like DriveClub and possibly inFamous: Second Son, and there will be several big-name multiplatform titles as well (Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Watch Dogs, etc.). But Sony does want to continue its tradition of diversity and variety, which is always good to hear.

I hope Knack succeeds. I may want it more than KZ.

In this quote that I have taken from the article above we read exactly why Sony has always will continue to see my money.

Sony is about the games first, hardware second.

I wondered about that, it seemed like a strange choice to showcase a game that doesn't need the system's new power as the first one.

I'm glad they are committed to various projects outside the basic violent shooter, I just wish they'd make their own JRPGs instead.

I was most excited about the tech demo that Media Molecule put together. It was impressive, creative, and looked like a lot of fun!

And this is why I've always been Playstation first (and PC a close-ish second) - you just get games on Playstation that you literally don't get anywhere else*. Xbox has some great arcade shooters, but there are great arcade shooters everywhere, but you can only play Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, Heavy Rain, Beyond, Tokyo Jungle, Journey and so many other unique games on Playstation. Looking forward to getting right into Knack :D.

* You also get unique games on Ninty platforms, I just don't enjoy their games as much - I find they tend to regurgitate the same stuff, rather than push ideas forward.
