Naughty Dog: Hitting 60FPS With Uncharted 4 Is "Really Hard"

In the past, Naughty Dog has said the frames per second number for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is secondary to solid game performance.

They're still targeting 60 frames per second but it isn't easy. Game director Neil Druckmann spoke about the challenge in a new Game Informer interview.

In short, hitting 60FPS for the game is pretty damn tough:

"Really f**king hard. That's true for any game. It was really hard on The Last of Us Remastered, and that's a game we had finished and we knew exactly what the end result needs to look like. And here [with Uncharted 4] we're trying to push the boundaries of what this game can look like; and do realistic, real-time cutscenes; and trying to do 60fps is really hard."

Druckmann added that the game remains a work in progress and for the time being, nothing is concrete. He says the current objective is to "make the best experience" and they'll continue to examine their progress: "We're constantly making choices to our production about what's going to make the game feel best and look its best." Well, we have no doubt they're doing exactly that.

Do you care if the game doesn't hit 60FPS? I imagine most only care about the game's performance. As we've said before, if it looks great and plays great, we're golden.

I don't mind if it is 30FPS, but I don't know how it is really hard to hit.

Isn't MGS5 hitting 60fps? I know Grounds Zeroes was 60fps but that was a very small map compared to what the Phantom Pain will be.

I think 30fps is more acceptable for a TPS because of the view, so I really don't care.

I think more on the fact that their engine doesn't do 60fps. Kojima made his engine to support 1080/60 from the get go.

I really don't understand when people say that 30 fps is more suitable for TPP view... I mean, WHY for the love of God?! We had TLoU on PS4 with excellent 60fps and it felt superb. Whatever the FPP or TPP you still have to aim and shoot, so? I don't care about the type of game - 60 fps is better ALWAYS then 30 fps. And please don't start with that "cinematic feel" bullshit.

On topic, I rather take stable 30fps with better graphics, then volatile 40-60 fps along with sacrifices in picture quality.

If it was inexcusable for AC to run @ 30fps then it should be the same for UC.

AC is an open world game, hitting 60FPS on current gen consoles is unrealistic.

Wait....what? I thought that dipping below 1080p/60FPS is inexcusable this console generation? Or is that only with Xbox and Wii U games? Now if it's a PS4 title it doesn't matter as long as it looks and plays great? Oh, ok.

No you got it right if its uncharted or anything playstation its ok if the game is 30fps. it was only a few months ago where there was a post about games and that they need to be 60fps and anything else is just not enough. So what changed ben? Oh wait thats right its uncharted so its ok. Fanboys are bad news i will tell you..

Wii U games are hitting 1080p/60fps. I don't think Ben is being disingenuous by wanting a standard visually, but also being a realist that if a game doesn't hit it, it's not really the end of the world.

If the previous uncharteds ran at 30fps then I don't have a problem with this one doing that either.

Also I can think of 4 very good reasons why Tom Brady does not suck.

More false bullshit from forumites who really need to shut up.

NEVER have I said all next-gen games should operate at 60FPS. In fact, I've said over and over that the FPS/resolution argument bores me, and there are entire editorials about how any game can be at 30FPS so long as it still runs well. Never have I specified platform; never have I specified FPS requirements.

Anybody want to source the mythical post/article where I did? Try and find it.

SO sick of idiots misquoting me to suit their own childish agendas.

@KidPresentable - "Wii U games are hitting 1080p/60fps"

No, on Wii U games run at 720p/60fps. With 720p being the native resolution. The Wii U does allow games to run at 1080p, but that's 1080p with upscaling.

I'm waiting for the evidence that I ever said any such thing about frames per second and PS4 titles. Really, let's see it.

Or should I just make up a list of all the links where I said I didn't care at all about FPS? And then another entire set of links about supporting other brands and platforms (for which I also took flak, by the way)?

Nobody can win with you people.

Wow wow wow! Sounds like Benny needs a vacation. Aren't you the site moderator? So quick to turn to insults. Pretty normal.

Allow me to rephrase: with the amount of "PS4 title outperforms XboxOne title AGAIN" (see Witcher 3 most recently), and "XBO holding back PS4" (see: AC Unity) articles floating around this site, it just seemed odd to me that when a high profile PS4 exclusive (maybe THE most important exclusive in the consoles life) is rumored to be at 30 FPS it's no big deal. I didn't mean to put words in your mouth by saying it's inexcusable. But if FPS and 720p/900p/1080p aren't that big of a deal, why all the articles about those topics all the time???

Ye gads, enough with the fps obsessions. It's like everyone's suddenly developed an extreme case of frame rate sensitivity. Not too long ago, almost all visual entertainment ran at 24fps (film) or 30fps (NTSC television), and everyone enjoyed it just fine ;). Many early 3D polygonal video games didn't even hit that!

That's not to say that 60fps isn't 'nice', but it's the same way that advanced AO or AA is 'nice', it's hardly integral to a good game.

I also take strong issue with people assuming that fps is always better than clarity (resolution). For me, personally, an extra 10-20% resolution difference is a lot more important to my enjoyment than a 0.016ms (the difference between 30 and 60 fps) increase in my response time. Never, in the field of human history, have so many people got so excited about so small an amount of time!

1080p is more important to me than fps, as long as any game is a solid 30fps I'm a happy camper.
All Uncharted Games were 30fps and it never seemed to affect my enjoyment of it, but if they manage to do it in 1080/60 it will probably be the most stunning looking game in any console for a long while...

i think if it had a range of 30-60fps or some range that was like maybe even 45-60fps that it would be below 30 but up to 60 in some for would be fine. so as long the game runs great i think i'll be fine but i know alot of people are much more critical than me

happy gaming

So question why is it always 30 or 60? Why not 45FPS? I have had games on my PC that stay about a good solid 42-46FPS and still look fine/. Why do they always have to take such a drastic cut?

It's like if a Dev sees their game which is trying to target a solid 60FPS dip into the 40's or 50's they just say screw it and cut it all the way down to 30 I just don't understand this.

This confuses me too. why can't there even be a range, with 40-60 being the target?

I mean, 40 frames are better (and noticeable) than 30. In fact it's a 33% increase in frames!

When you have fluctuations in framerate, your input lag changes drastically and it's always a bad thing - when steering car, aiming at enemies, doing acrobatics like jumping. You can never do it correctly.
It's better to have stable 30, then volatile 40-60.

I took Beam's post as meaning why not aim for a stable target anywhere between 40-60. As in if they can maintain a Stable 40 FPS why no simply keep it at that instead of dropping it down to 30?

I actually meant both, Shaune.

Thanks to the FPS counter in the Steam client I can now always know what the current frame rate is, and I'd say it's *normal* with a fluctuating frame rate unless a setting is turned on to cap the frame rate at a given point.
In the games with that option I always turn off capping cause I can't say I have experienced much issues with letting the frame rate fluctuate a little bit...

I know what you mean and generally speaking I agree, it's a bit embarassing.
But it really does depend on how much they push the visuals. Technically speaking it's not hard to force *any* system down to 30 and less frames, if only you push enough work to the GPUs. So we need to wait until we see the result before we place the final verdict.

Anyone on here giving Ben a hard time, just remember, there is a far worst forum (one that caters to the xbone) that has "official" in its title, with moderators and administrators who are worse in name calling and taking down links. One can't logically post questions or links about anything that may slander the xboxs name without it being taken down and accounts blocked. If anything, Ben seems to have taken most of you forumites bullshit rather well, since you are still around to continue bantering with your ill informed arguments.

With that said. As a game developer, hitting 60 fps with a game as large as uc4 (just look at character model differences and landscapes between uc3 and uc4), can be tricky. Many times, cuts have to be made or something has to be below standards, in order to hit that mark. Do I believe naughty dog can achieve 60fps? Yes. Will they do it without using eye trickery? No.

And yes, xbone devs have to do the same thing as well as pc devs. It's quite common in the game industry to cut corners to improve gameplay.
