Whore Of The Orient On Hold As Team Bondi Needs A Publisher

Trouble just seems to follow this developer around.

It was quite the saga after L.A. Noire released: Team Bondi was under investigation for creating a terrible work environment, and multiple reports from departed employees were eye-opening. Then the team reportedly went under, as most employees passed over to Aussie company KMM Interactive.

It was a pretty big mess. But lo and behold, a year or so later, we hear that the developer is somehow back on its feet and working on a new game called Whore of the Orient. It wouldn't be due out until 2015 but the game sounded like it had promise (set in 1936 Shanghai). Unfortunately, as Superannuation reports, they weren't able to nail down a publisher.

It seems Warner Bros. Interactive had tentatively signed on but they backed out "right before last Christmas." So now development is on hold and members of the staff have been laid off. That all being said, Team Bondi owner KMM's Doug Mitchell said they still want to pursue the project:

"Whore of the Orient is a unique and extraordinary story and game, and we are still actively pursuing the right investor to partner with."

Just a thought, Doug- That title might be giving a lot of potential publishers pause. It catches one's attention, certainly, but many could have a problem with it. And I really do hope they find a publisher because if the new game is anything like L.A. Noire, I'm on board.

Is Team Bondi and Rockstar relationship soured? With a title like that it should be right up Rockstar's alley.

I think Rockstar had their fill of Bondi's shenanigans with L.A. Noire.

I think they're making a mistake with the title of this game. I respect that it's unconventional and startling, but I think it's going to take a huge chunk out of their potential sales.

Most definitely, I wish it was a little less provocative. I'm can't think of anything right off the top of my head but I'm sure they could change a word or two to convey the same meaning.

On the other hand, yes if it's anything like L.A NOIRE it's mine. If it ever releases that is....

Agreed. Keep the content, story and gameplay the same, just give it a new name that appeals to a larger audience.

It seems to be targeting the 20 - 40 year old gaming crowd, so how about something like...

"Courtesan of the East"
"Lady of the Neon Light"
"The Asia Mystery"
"Mistress of the Orient"

I'm happy to help name your game! Dancemachine55 is at your service.

It wasn't done to be sensationalistic. Whore of the Orient is a term referring to Shanghai that dates back to the 19th century. It was an open port; the kind of place where pretty much anything goes, both good and bad.

sigh.
uniqueness, creativity, suffers this fate.
all the while yesterdays shooter is gaining publishers at the rate of 100 times the speed of rabbit multiplication!
sigh.
ill say it again, there is not a single word out there that describes how much i hate this industry!
thank god the rest of the world is not like this, otherwise we would be eating the same thing for breakfast lunch and tea for the rest of eternity!
we can have a billion and one types of food.
a billion and one types of movies.
a billion and one types of books.
so why cant we have a billion and one types of games?
