The Order Leads The Charge For Next-Gen Graphical Quality?

Despite all the controversy surrounding Ready at Dawn's The Order: 1886, there's one thing everyone seems to agree on:

It looks incredible.

And the developers say this PlayStation 4 exclusive is only the beginning. While it may set the visual standard for the time being, upcoming games will look "much better." So said Ready at Dawn boss Ru Weerasuriya in a new VideoGamer interview:

"I know that there's games coming out that are going to be so much better than the ones that we make even, visually… this generation is going to be pretty sweet. I'm excited purely because of this and what I'm thinking is going to be next--what I know we're going to do next."

He added that as games continue to improve from a graphical standpoint, the stellar visual display in The Order will become the norm. Weerasuriya says he's excited because games will look better and play better, "and we're going to be able to do every single type of game in this kind of fidelity."

One last tidbit from the interview: A lot of people are whining about the QTEs in the game but Weerasuriya claims the Quick Time Events are "sparse."

The graphics do look nice but they use those horrible letterbox bars on the top and bottom. I'm told that it's because it allows for a more stable experience due to less pixels being rendered. And yesterday we learned it's only running at 30fps. So far next gen is only marginally better then last gen. In some areas it's takes a step backward. Letterbox presentation on an already widescreen tv is blagh.

It actually has more pixels rendered. Nothing was really cut from it, only "screen" space and even that it still runs at 1080p.

Right but I'm told that the reason for the reduction in the screen space was to help maintain consistent performance by reducing the number of pixels on screen. The same thing was done with The Evil Within. But that game still suffered from frame rate dips and clipping. Which makes me question the claims of how spectacular this new gen was supposed to be. Shouldn't the PS4 be capable of 1080p 60fps with out cutting corners like reducing screen space? Especially with a linear game like The Order which isnt even hitting 60fps.

Or was this a decision made to give it a more cinematic feel? Either way it's a poor design choice in my opinion. Seems like a waste to have 25% of your screen covered up by black bars when playing a game. Especially one that's supposed to be a major step forward in terms of graphic fidelity.

No, they could have gone 1080p but they decided to go for a cinematic look. That is all, their rendering engine is more advanced and although it does have some baked lighting it also uses real lighting techniques as well. They are using 4xMSAA, Ryse used SMAAx1 and even then the engine felt overloaded and it dipped below their "locked" 30 fps. They said they could have used a similar engine to that of sucker punch, with no AA like some WiiU games, but they decided from the outset that they wanted a film like experience.

As for the evil within, sadly it was Japanese developers who were not experienced enough on an American engine. The engine was always made to run 1080p 60fps, so whatever they did to it they butchered it. At times, the graphics look good, just not "nextgen" good. The drops to 10fps are appalling and I can't believe they decided to release it, the game plays even worse before the patch.

I see. It's not a deal breaker for me but since it was simply a choice to make it feel more cinematic and not a hardware or engine limitation it would be nice to have an option to turn it off.

I was pretty disappointed in The Evil Within when I popped it in. It's a fun game but the performance kept disrupting the experience.

sawao: Sorry but they *obviously* decrease the amount of pixels drawn to ease the load on the engine. I mean, come on dude. This is simple math.

It is correct that this enables them to use more power on the pixels that is left to be drawn and they probably did just that, but the alternative would be to go fullscreen but lower resolution. It's essentially the same.

I think Ryse: Son Of Rome is still the best looking game on current gen consoles.

I have yet to see any previews of anything that even comes close. Not even Uncharted. It's actually kinda weird, it's like it's in a league of it's own. Almost like it's being developed for a totally different console. I really do think it's gonna be the best looking for at least a year. Kinda like how Uncharted 2, MGS4 and GOW3 were head and shoulders better looking than anything on the PS3 and 360 for a while.

It's an impressive graphical accomplishment, that's for sure. I'm extremely happy that they decided against the warm colors for character models. The black bars are on practically every BD I watch. 30fps should be fine in this game as they've built with the emphasis on crisp controls. It's not skipping the typical 2-3fps in order to make it more "realistic". I'm assuming that they realized 30fps already adds in a delay of its own!
