Stand Fast, RAD, Don't Let The Haters Hurt The Order's Sequel

I made it abundantly clear in my review:

Far too many critics messed this one up.

We saw far too much subjectivity passed off as fact; i.e., the nasty and erroneous belief that open-world is simply superior to a linear structure, that any cut-scene longer than a few minutes is now considered "too long" (and consequently, a huge "flaw"), etc. We also saw more evidence that games without multiplayer and games that aren't sandbox-oriented are quite simply treated unfairly by the critical community.

I've got just one thing to say to developer Ready at Dawn: Ignore this sh**. I'm sorry it has hurt the scores for The Order: 1886, and I'm sorry the game suffered through such a hugely exaggerated - and often completely false - series of negative headlines prior to launch. Inevitably, I expect all this to have a negative impact on sales (even though it has debuted at #1 in the UK). But if you are cleared to make a sequel, do not let this mess hurt the next project.

Don't kowtow; don't bend and scrape; stick to your guns. You want to create a linear, narrative-driven adventure and there is nothing wrong with that. No, it doesn't need multiplayer; no, it doesn't need to be longer, and don't listen to this tripe about the pacing. The pacing is excellent; the only "pacing" twitch gamers complain about is the fact that they can't run around and do whatever they want every second of the game. Ignore it all, RAD.

As you've probably seen from a very vocal contingent of fans, and despite what some critics and journalists want everyone to believe (that linear is "inferior"), there are still plenty of people who appreciate what you're trying to do. As such, stick to the plan. Now, we'll all welcome better AI, fewer QTEs, a more robust stealth mechanic, a less predictable story, etc. By all means, we're not saying you shouldn't address these shortcomings; they're precisely why The Order isn't the AAA PS4 exclusive it could've been.

But just fix those things; don't change what this new IP is about. Please don't. Not every gamer in the world only cares about multiplayer, open-world, etc. I promise.

In the golden era of turn-based rpgs, a huge amount of gamers/peers in my circle were against them. They said that it was a boring and antiquated mechanic. Years later, this mechanic seems to be fighting a losing battle for survival. With so many detractors for linear games with emphasis on story, like turn-based rpgs, I worry that developers are now reluctant to make such games.
It's so frustrating that developers are making games for my personal tastes and a huge and rather vocal part of the gaming community is against these types of games.

Yeah, let's encourage this. We all can sit and play multiplayer open-world action games with rpg and stealth elements where the story is told within the game through letters and recordings we find along the way. (Add more elements if you see where I'm going with this). Every game should follow this model.

I'd support a sequel. I hate when new IPs die for stupid reasons. Hell, even high scoring good selling ones die just because they don't smash the 4 million barrier.

You need a number after your name to sell most of the time and The Order 2 would have the ability to fine tune the experience and grab for the 9.

Great game.

Thankfully I don't listen to the media. I am pretty good judge of quality. Also the subject matter really interests me. Reading every newspaper was great. The Order 1886 has a lot that I like. It did have it's issues with shoehorned in QTEs that didn't belong in some places hindered the pacing. That is why I gave it a solid 9 for a score instead of a 10. This game was outstanding and everything else....graphics, sound, control, story were terrific! I finished the game on hard and got the Platinum in 18 hours. Looking forward to my next play through with my red outfit and Thermite Rifle. We will see a sequel 1887, that you can count on. R@D deserves a lot of credit for doing something THEY wanted to do and doing it well.

The Order was fun for awhile but I had to trade it in. I enjoyed it at least. The graphics are beyond anything I've seen thus far. Plus the story is not that bad. I believe the vampires were a major plothole though, but that may be cleared up in the sequel if there is one.

If you did play it again can you skip the cut scenes the second time around as I wouldn't want to sit through them again.

When the media steps the hell up and stops reporting rumors with a wink, then this type of garbage will stop. Also, we gamers, too. I'm just as guilty, clicking to read and comment. I'm done with wallowing in trash. Give me facts. And just the facts. Not like FF15, where every indication is that it is in fact a RPG, yet I still read people claim it's not while reporting on it.

Ready At Dawn made a very good game that was crushed under the weight of hype. Just like Destiny. Alot of the criticism is unfounded, but some of it is spot on. This game didn't attempt to reinvent the wheel but it didn't even attempt to make a slightly better one. AI, too many QTE, piss weak boss fights hampered by an unwavering control scheme, too many little cutscenes just to walk a hallway( it's not the 6 minute cutscenes, it's the thousand 5 second scenes that hamper immersion) and not enough enemy variety are valid and will hopefully be addressed in the sequel. Not saying go open world, but a scene where I can maybe hunt a few lycans (or other supernaturalspecies) in a 5 or 6 block radius, using a Tesla device or my own Knight training wouldn't be bad at all. I'm against any sort of competitive multiplayer in this series. It doesn't need it.

RAD, if there is any criticism you really need to heed it's this: Make EVERY game like it's your last..

This game deserves a sequel. People are trippin with the hate and negative reactions to this game. Not everything has to be open world like Far Cry or GTA. It's actually refreshing game to play when I look at my library which consists of mostly military FPS or open world TPS. Scripted as this game might be, it's still a technical powerhouse and the controls are some of the best I've come across since The Last of Us.

Also this whining about the QTE's is over blown. Yes there are a lot of QTE's but that's half of the gameplay in games like God of War and all of the gameplay in Heavy Rain. Didn't hear people complain that much about the QTE's in those games. In my opinion people were too invested in hating this game before even playing it so now maybe they feel it would look foolish of them to actually play the game and admit they were wrong.

I think they have a solid foundation to build upon.

If they can accept the critic shortcomings and build from there I would like:

A longer campaign.
Option to play the campaign with online coop game play.
Online competitive multiplayer with humans vs humans (Same abilities gameplay) and Humans vs Werewolves, vampires (Diferent abilities game play)
A Horde mode online coop gameplay.
Pared down QTE.
Skipable cutscenes after you beat the game.

I think with those additions it can justify a 60 Price tag at launch and plenty of replay value.

I wasn't thinking Resident Evil coop where there has to be another player at all times or it is AI contrilled (Sucks)

I was thinking more like Gears of War coop where you can play alone and if you play coop your friend magically appears to play. There is no baby sitting your AI friend when you play by yourself.

I'd also like to point out that RAD's first attempt at third person gunplay is better executed then even games that have been doing it for years like GTA. Even MGS5's gunplay is too reliant on auto aim and the manual aiming isn't fluid enough to play with auto aim turned off.

Exactly like I said before I was told I was "dumb". The developers made sure the game had little to no lag input. It plays better than some 60fps games. I actually prefer the combat in this game compared to the last of us. It really has such great gameplay.

I still prefer the overall combat in The Last of Us. They nearly perfected melee combat and stealth combat. There really isn't any melee in this besides a QTE and the stealth feels forced like in Uncharted. As for the gun play I can't say which I prefer. I like this because it's a great execution for a game that has its main combat revolving around firefights and the weapons feel great. It does that aspect perfect but I also like the Last of Us because it adds a bit of a realistic aspect in regards to aim waving and scarcity of ammo. It's more challenging aiming at moving targets in a good way. Not like in GTA when you're using free aim. Its amazing rockstar still hasn't gotten free aiming right.

I do agree with how great the motions feel. They did a good job making the game feel fluid like a 60fps game. In my opinion controls matter to me just as much as the rest of what makes a game great. If the controls suck then it doesn't matter how much gameplay there is or how big the world is. It just serves to make the game frustrating and ultimately boring.

I'm out of touch with the GTA's of today but I can tell you that GTA3 and Vice City had a crap system for shooting. Heck. Control in general was sluggish.
I remember getting the PC version and the game felt like a whole new experience when it came to aiming and shooting.
Missions that were once frustrating became normal and fun.
