Watch Dogs On PS4: Overall, A More Realistic Experience

It's one of several "cross-generation" titles on tap for later this year, and it's also one of the most anticipated games on the immediate horizon.

Now, in a recent GamesTM interview with Watch Dogs creative director Jonathan Morin (as cited by Gaming Everything), we have some details concerning the upgrades we'll find in the PlayStation 4 version. As you might've anticipated, this involves graphics and AI. Said Morin:

"When the PS4 showed up it did bring new possibilities to improve graphics and every AI systems we have. But in the same way we did for four years already, we will continue to look beyond what is possible to achieve in order to bring this little something extra out there for players to enjoy. So expect more AI behaviors, more realistic consequences to your actions and an overall improvement in visuals realization. Our team has been working on this very complex ecosystem for more than four years now; this is what is required to build such an intricate set of AI systems."

Morin added that the PS4 certainly brings better processing power and more memory to the table. But that's not actually the biggest improvement-

"What the new machine brings is new processing power and memory to run these things, but the biggest investment is always the time and the quality of the resources required to pull it off. So not only does the next generation bring more possibilities, but it also brings new challenges that we believe are extremely exciting from both a player’s and a developer’s perspective."

Watch Dogs might be downright mind-blowing on the PS4. I wonder if this is incentive enough to spring for Sony's new machine; this, and the knowledge that other cross-generation games will benefit in the same way. As we've said before, it could be third-party blockbusters and not exclusives that fuel early sales of the new PlayStation.

Watch Dogs is #3 on my most anticipated upcoming titles for this year, after Beyond and TLoU. Now, if TLoU were another cross-generation title, I'd basically be compelled to buy the PS4 early on. With the addition of Watch Dogs to inFamous: SS and Killzone SF, I'm considering it even without TLoU.

In short, Sony seems to have learned that really it comes down to the games for selling their machine early on and down the road (especially in comparison to other platforms).

lol ANNND I just read your (Ben's) article about Sony gamers favouring games over all other considerations in deciding about purchasing the PS4. So my opinion happened to be right (at least according to those polled here).

This game really seems like it has everything I could want and some. Truely looking forward to it and will without a doubt be buying the PS4 version, even if I don't have the system at the same time.

it will be really interesting to see what they do with the ps4 version, especially since its a open world game.
the bane of open world games has always been the pathetic amount of memory, so the ps4s 8GB should really open up the flood gates!
i just hope this does not fall victim to the cross generation plague.
theres so much more they can do with the ps4 version.
but will they?
or will the ps4 versions of games for a while just be slightly tarted up ports?

So, people who might have an interest in the game but not getting a next gen console right away will either wait or stick to buying the inferior version. Going to be interesting how this affects profitability.

Personally even if reviews are great I won't buy it until it's cheap because Ubisoft pissed me off with ACIII. I'll also wait longer to get the PS4 version when I finally buy the console in a year or two.

Very interested to see a side by side comparison of both versions. But it's interesting that they say the AI will be better on one version than another. It's good to know that the PS4 can offer more than just new graphics. So far this is the most promising next gen title I have seen. When I ever get a PS4 this will definitely be a title I'd pick up.

Of course the AI should be better on the PS4, the massive difference in the amount of RAM alone should allow that never mind the significantly greater amount of processing power.

two points I REALLY like in the article:

to improve...every AI systems we have - GOOD! not just new shiny stuff, but adding to gameplay/immersion!

the biggest investment is always the time and the resources required to pull it off - Sony have gone the correct route in making it easier for developers to, well, develop for their console...less time required for development (roughly) means more time to "put stuff" in the game, and more time to fine tune it

my "cross-gen" preorders on current gen games will convert to PS4 as soon as launch dates are announced - I don't mind waiting a bit longer to have the opportunity to more fully immerse myself in the gaming world

It looks like an awesome game, the funny thing about cross gen titles though is they typically wind up on the low end of the awesome spectrum and so I'll just make this a bargain bin PS4 pick up. As soon as the good games start flowing this will be cheap, especially as a ubisoft game.

Watch Dog and GTA5. That's my system sellers right there.
I don't need more than that this year for the PS4 to be worth the investment.
