PSXE Poll Update: Forget The PS4 Frills, Games Matter Most

These days, video game consoles don't just play games. That will be truer than ever when the next generation of machines arrive.

But while they all have a lot of fancy features and price and reliability are always critical, the underlying core hasn't changed in the console realm- More than anything gamers still want games, which is awesome.

As our recent poll indicates, the vast majority of participators said they care most about the software selection for the upcoming PlayStation 4. Price was an obvious second, but that option didn't record even half the number of votes as "Games" did...and you know, I think that's a good sign. At least the hardcore still care about games above all else, at least social media hasn't found a way to rule every facet of entertainment, and at least developers still have a reason to make great games. The incentive will always be there!

This week, we're responding to the rumor that Sony might show off the PlayStation 4 next month. Yep, we might actually get to see what it looks like! Sony initially downplayed the importance of the unveiling, saying it's "just a box" but what do you say? Is it very important to you? Like if you think it's ugly, it would actually dissuade you from buying it? Is it only a mild consideration? Or do you not care in the slightest?

Sure games matter, but without a powerful and capable system there are no games! A balanced diet and nutritious breakfast with all sorts of nutritious values not too focused on one almighty energy source is key for a successful Playstation 4!

Price is gonna matter more than games. If it gets a higher price than the next Xbox people will complain. Everybody praise the Vita's price and after Nintendo drop the price on its 3ds, Sony got hate again.
I want a reliable hardware, since Sony delivers the best games.

My only desire regarding the actual box of the PS4 is that it's small. I understand that the first iteration of every console is its biggest, but I hope there's more effort made to reduction than there was for the PS3. The original PS3s were just too damn big, and honestly, even the slim is a little on the large side considering how long in the systems lifespan it came out. Not sure where that puts me in the poll, as long as it'll fit on my shelves and the price isn't outrageous, I'll probably get it much earlier than I did the PS3, but it is something I'm interested in.

I personally don't like voting between these options. They all play off each other so it's not really fair to vote for only one.

For this reason, I have to say reliability. If the PS4 becomes what the 360 was, meaning breaking in the first two years, or even faster, that's just a lot of unnecessary hassle. I don't want to have to go through 4 plus consoles, and the worst part is the waiting for the repaired or refurbished replacement. Actually no, the worst part is the console breaking after the warranty, then you really got fork the $$$.

I was lucky to have found an alternative to get my slim (for free) with my budget as tight as it was, otherwise, I wouldn't be able to play any of my PS3 games. What is the point of games if you're going to have an unreliable console that could either break, consistently freeze, or shut down due to heat?

Don't get me wrong games are important, but for a dedicated gaming console, do we really have to worry about games? It's a gaming console and we kinda can safely assume we'll get games for it, especially with how it is now. It's like buying a Nintendo console and worrying that you're not going to get a Mario or Zelda game for it. Reliability on the other hand, we can't assume.

*edit - small rant

Just curious, am I the only one that isn't taking the original 60gb PS3's reliability lightly? It's like they're guaranteed to break down AFTER warranty. Oh yeah, it was a $599 machine. Obviously it's not as bad as the early 360s where it breaks months after, but point stands. Sure, there may be some exceptions to the few lucky ones, but I'm pretty sure most of us went YLOD with it. The slim's reliability though, put me in faith again, but I swear the launch PS4s better not try to pull of this stunt again. We shouldn't have to buy multiple consoles due to defective parts. This is probably one aspect I appreciate in Nintendo's console. Yes, they have few ones breaking down, but there's a reason why they don't have acronyms for their broken consoles like YLOD or RLOD.

I feel your pain as my 60GB fatty went YLOD at about the 2 yr mark. But the slim has been going strong since I bought the 160 GB system.(upgraded hard drive now)

just goes to show how shortsighted people really are!
these "frills" are what MAKE the games!
no frills, no games!
after all whats the point of having a gazillion games, if the platform there on has the processing power of a pipin?

as for the importance of the asthetics, well, ill leave it at this.
i bought the xperia z instead of the galaxy 4, only because the galaxy 4 looks like a cheap chineese dummy phone!
im paying 60+ bucks a month for my contract, so thats 1400+ bucks for a 2 year contract!
so when im paying 1400 bucks for something that looks like it cost 5 bucks, yea we have a small problem.........
suddenly the better hardware, better screen (not that thats saying much, christ the screen in the Z is SH*T!), way, way, WAAAAAAAAAAAAY more software features, higher capacity Z only is available as 16GB, 16GB, or 16GB!
S4 goes up to 64GB if i remember right, plus the ability to add another 64GB via a micro SD.
but suddenly all those better features just do not matter because the thing looks so f*cking cheap!
as ive said a billion times before, dont underestimate the power of aesthetics.
unlike size, looks DO matter!

I put price because great games are coming no matter what, so the price will decide WHEN it is appropriate to buy. If it's low enough I'll just pool Xmas resources.

The way the console looks somewhat important just because I like a nice lookin piece of ass, I mean hardware, I mean technology...

For me it was impossible to choose between hardware and games. I am excited about the hardware *because* of the games. I believe the next generation will take gaming a good leap forward - because of the hardware allows them to do that jump.
