Rock Band 4 In Development, Ready To Ship Later In 2015

The evidence has been piling up for months and now it's official.

Developer Harmonix has announced at GDC this week that Rock Band 4 is indeed in development and will ship later this year. It's coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and it will support legacy instruments in addition to offering brand new instrument options.

The best part for long-time fans is that if you purchased a bunch of DLC songs in the past, they'll be playable in the new version. There's no gameplay available just yet but the team has been doing a lot of talking. For instance, product manager Daniel Sussman tells GamesIndustry.biz that they're operating on one of the "leanest budgets" they've ever used.

As for instruments, they're not doing anything too new; rather, they chose to stick with platform holders so fans can use their own instruments. Still, Sussman says "that doesn't mean it can't innovate" and they're looking to make RB4 the definitive, ongoing edition. "We do not anticipate having a Rock Band 6, 7, 8," he said. Sussman added:

"I think there's a lot of room for creative expression in the software and changing the hardware design sets up a really vicious feedback loop. There's something nice about understanding the controller design and designing for that as opposed to innovating both in parallel."

You can't wait for it, huh?

I have a friend who's a bit of a guitar snob.

My favorite pastime with him is to say things like, "I don't play guitar, but I'm amazing at Guitar Hero/Rock Band, so I totally get what you're saying."

This new game will give me more jokes, I'm sure.

And that's supposed to make me feel good?? That and apparently hardly anything new with the instruments, tell me why they're making a new game again???

Nice... It's been a while since I rocked with "Eye of Tiger" on RockBand... They should stop making more RockBands games if they are keeping the same instruments and not adding any new ones... They should just keep adding more DLC song bundles every few months and I'm sure ppl would be happy with that

SWEEET!!!!!
now more guitar hero and less pop hero, and i really hope harmonix brings the game up allot more to GH standards.
dunno why but the rock band games have always felt more basic and allot less difficult and less envolving than the GH games have.
when your mastering a song in RB3 getting full stars on highest difficulty, then failing said song, same maximum difficulty, in guitar hero, you know somethings wrong.

It's great that I'll still be able to play Planetsmasher and the Pantera pack on my rock band Warbeast, but I'm wondering what will make it different enough to warrant another purchase.

Well, the first thing that comes to mind for me is that it will be for the PS4. I have my PS3 relegated to the bedroom and use it to watch movies so it will be nice to have all my old songs and pull out the instruments and play the game on the PS4. If you still play it on PS3, then don't buy this game. It will be the same experience just on a new console.
