Uncharted 4 Likely Comes In At 30fps, With Enhanced AI

Really, we don't need 60 frames per second if the game rules.

While developer Naughty Dog has said in the past that they're striving for 60fps for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, they stressed the importance of performance over stats.

And it seems like the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive will settle in at 1080p and 30fps, if a Play UK magazine feature is to be believed. As referenced by Z-Goichi, Play UK's time with a demo tells them the end result likely will fall shy of 60fps. Again, though, it wouldn't really surprise anyone; past Uncharted entries all ran at 30fps.

Additionally, Uncharted 4 should boast enhanced AI, which is good news. They say the partner AI gives the feeling of "not being with an idiot." Fine by me, provided he or she isn't too great...leave some targets for me!

I like 60FPS plenty but I've always felt this series is better off with a 30FPS target.

Better AI is always welcome. I just hope the more open-ended nature of the game doesn't expose a lot of AI problems. It seems to me when AI is having to account for omni-directional awareness it struggles. Killzone's AI never seemed troubled until Shadowfall released.

Thanks man. At least I know now you're not one who thinks that I actually always disliked 60fps plenty, believing also that Uncharted 4 should've been 60fps and that Shadowfall actually has the best AI in the series. =p

60 fps is great but not necessary, its best in fast paced online games anyway.

I don't really notice fps unless I specifically look for it. Obviously, I notice side-by-side comparisons. It's easy to see. What I mean is that I wouldn't pick up on it on my own unless I specifically wanted to look for it.

Huge difference in games like the Last of Us. No side by side comparison needed to notice the difference in the PS3 vs PS4 versions.

Same with BF4 with the campaign vs online. The campaign is slick where as the multiplayer is less consistent.

Oh for sure. I totally, 100% agree.

I guess a better way to explain would be to say, "If I played a game for the first time, I wouldn't be able to tell you if it was 30fps or 60fps." If that makes any sense.

hehe Sadly, Sony's words are often misleading. Remember how they touted 1080p gaming with PS3? Something that was a genuine rarity during that entire gen, where games like Gran Turismo that professed to 1080p only offered non-native implementations of the standard.

They also stated PS Plus users would get Drive Club for free with their PS Plus subscription. Which then got downgraded to a highly gimped version of the real game (something they made no mention of on stage). Which then the game constantly was delayed to just a month before everyone's PS Plus subscription expired (for those who bought a PS4 at launch and subscribed to PS Plus. And many did exactly that). It's nuts thinking that Sony at no time even offered an OFFLINE version of Drive Club to PS Plus members to at least make good on their word to some degree.
Now that Drive Club has essentially been fixed there's still essentially nothing forthcoming. Where the PS Plus that looked to offer a nice selection of past full retail games, as it did when it launched, has been reduced to regular baskets of indie games that could often be had for a dollar or less each on PC.

While I do like being part of the Sony ecosystem, this relationship comes with plenty of bruises (thinks of Vita. thinks of their smoke screen with remote play). They're really a favorite by default.

They never promised driveclub temjin. It was always driveclub plus edition. You could actually collect the platinum without ever buying it. They said it would be limited which it was. So no, they did not lie about it.

On stage Sony said that? Like when it was revealed? It seems to me the info about it being limited was at a later time, thus causing a bit of a fuss among gamers when the eventual news broke.

I remember them saying we'd get a "PS+ version" of Driveclub. I understood that to mean it wasn't the same game as the retail version. That said I have yet to see the PS+ version become available to this day. So yea, that was another broken or delayed promise.

True that Jawk. How on Earth did they pull off that magic when it's a cross-gen game?

I think that's why. Because it's cross gen. While the game is spectacular looking there are some flaws like draw distance pop in and occasional sub par texture resolution. On the ground for example, there are some places that look last gen. Also spent shell casings look like hexagons instead of circular. Hopefully these flaws will be improved in the Phantom Pain.

This doesn't bother me one bit to be honest. I know that if ND can get it to be a solid 60fps they will, these guys don't settle if they don't have to. Aside from that the best games I've played were a solid 30fps.

well enahnce AI makes the game more interesting which then means usually the game becomes more challenging and the longer and so should quell any concerns on "game length" so they should be fine sounds like it should be a fantastic game from everything i've heard

happy gaming

I don't care so much about FPS as long as its steady

I do however want 1080p quality, as poor resolution is definitely visible from my viewing distance

N0 60fps for this game then huh, that kind of blows a little. At least make the effort to get it up to 45fps to split the difference.

If only that could happen, v-locked anyway. Conventionally there's technical issues with television refresh rates and graphics card rendering to do such a thing.

I wrote this in an article here on 02/17/15, and I stand by it:

"I don't see 30 and 60 fps to be superior or inferior quality, since they both offer their own unique experiences. 30fps gives the visuals a more cinematic touch, while 60fps gives things a more realistic and textured feel. So I think developers should aim for whatever delivers on the experience they want to create. Heck, they can even go for 24fps for ultra intense cinematic action sequences. Don't know what the fuss is all about."

It's going to be a great game either way...

The fuss is we were asked buy a ps4 because it was the only console that would deliver true 1080p 60fps gameplay. So far the Wii U has more 60fps games under its belt.

On that level you're absolutely right Jawk. Empty promises are empty promises, despite what's being delivered.

I just wish the industry in general would stop making 30fps sound inferior when all it does is provide a different experience. I know it takes more horsepower to produce 60fps, but that doesn't make it better by default.

But your right, 60fps should be standard, something the PS4 should be able to do without breaking a sweat, and devs should only be saying a game is running at 30fps because it helps provide a truer representation of what they wanted, not "we couldn't hit 60fps, so we're settling for a solid 30fps".

I'm not impacted much by the 30 vs 60 fps debate. I've done plenty of side by sides for numerous games and only when I'm doing that do I really notice any difference. When I'm playing - unless if really affects the gameplay like in a first person shooter - I don't get affected much. If it's smooth and there's no latency issues I'll never complain one way or another.

I've done a lot of research on the fps', how 30 vs 60 compares, how each tv's and types of tv's display it and the conclusion I reached is while 60fps is a better experience it's all preference.

I've also learned that although the PS4 can do 1080p 60fps, the developer is going to do what's best for the game. ND has said numerous times themselves it's really hard to keep a steady 60fps. That tells me they've exceeded the limitations to some extent I couldn't explain, to not be able to get it to run steadily at 60. That is kind of exciting in its own right, knowing the game will look amazing either way. This goes for any other developer and game as well.

I wouldn't say a locked, consistant 30fps performance is bad thing or that it is massviely inferior to 60fps but when the option to play a game at 60fps is there, I'll always choose that option. It just provides for a much smoother experience and tighter controls. I can't ever go back and play the PS3 version of The Last of Us. Even turning the 30fps lock on in the options on the remastered version just shows how clunky 30fps is vs 60fps in a game like that. Imagine playing Smash Bros or Mario Kart at anything less than 60fps. it wouldn't be the same experience. It would be an inferior one.

I get that some devs feel it's better for what their goals but it would at least be nice to have a toggle option available like in The Last of Us Remastered and inFamous Second Son. Especially when one of Sony's next gen experience selling points was 1080p 60fps gameplay.

Not only that but there's no such thing as a simple statement like "60fps is better" or more advanced. A game can easily be 30fps, and even 720p for that matter - and still require more horsepower by the GPU (graphics processor) and deliver more detail and better graphics than the same game running 1080p & 60fps using the same hardware.

And I think that's what Naughty Dog is saying here, they're not talking about compromising to 30fps because they can't make the game RUN at 60fps, they're making decisions based on how well they can make the game look at 30fps vs 60fps and making the decision based on that. If they can make the game look better at 30fps (and it's pretty darn likely they can) they will probably, and HOPEFULLY IMO decide to keep the game at 30fps.
