Project Morpheus Price: "As Low As Can Possibly Be Done"

Right now, they're possibly the two most important questions gamers have concerning Project Morpheus:

How many games can we expect to see? How much will it cost?

While Sony can't put exact numbers to either query just yet, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida offered comments on both topics to GameSpot in a GDC interview. Firstly, Yoshida says "many studios of ours are working on actual games" and while they can't talk about those titles yet, they might show some gameplay at E3. He's "so excited" about these games but he can't wait to see what devs do in the future:

"I'm expecting a developer that we don't even know exists today will come up with something amazing. What excites me most, from our experience launching many platforms, is that it's always someone who we do not expect that comes up with totally new ideas and blows anybody's mind."

As for price, Yoshida said they're simply looking for a price tag that's "as low as possibly can be done." They want to give consumers an entry point so it's at least accessible; if they can do that, the device has a better chance of success.

Personally, I have no interest in it but I imagine it could be a game-changer (pun intended) for a great many.

I'm pretty sure he's referring to price. I see this sucker costing at least $500. Otherwise don't expect it to have the same quality of other VR hardware.

Well Vertigo the Oculus DK2 is only $350 and I assume Sony has far better connections in the industry and the fact they can produce parts of the headset themselves will likely save a lot of the production costs leading to a cheaper piece of hardware, though the Morpheus is a good deal more advanced in comparison to the Oculus.

Shaune, what makes you say so? In what way is it more advanced?

Much lighter weight, a higher resolution screen with a higher refresh rate, and from hands on videos I have watched apparently noticeably better tracking, the Morpheus is also designed to fit comfortably over glasses which I guess the Oculus has trouble with.

Are the specs for the final version of the Oculus out yet? I don't think so?

Cause I'd be surprised if the Oculus had a lower resolution screen than Morpheus. I seriously doubt it, cause the Morpheus is not at a higher resoultion than 1080p today (and it looks like it's where it will be at).

Well I thought we were going solely off of price which would entail the present Oculus and the price it currently costs not what it may have in the future and what the future cost will be to reflect those upgrades.

I don't see this being below $250 and that's overly hopeful.
$300-350 more realistic.

im not really into it but if they manage to get it under $150, with at least a few good games that use it i'll actually get it. Not that i think either will happen in the near future

I have no idea what neither of these VR alternatives will cost. Has anyone seen any price estimates from Oculus or Valve?

The Oculus Dev Kit #2 has been available for $350 for quite a while but it simply has the disclaimer "Yada yada this is an unfinished product and we are not responsible for incompatibility with games and blah blah blah this is meant for game developers yada yada blah blah, etc."

Good point, I didn't think of the dev kits.
I wonder if that is an indicator of the final price. These kits are made in relatively small amounts compared to when it launch, so I would guess the final price will be a fair deal lower. Maybe in the 275-300 range?

But I really have no idea.

I will use my PS Vita experience and be more careful with this device. Waiting for 2 years after the launch date to see how it performs seems logical now.

yeah for sure i could be a game changer and i think i will be more so for some genres than others. but as for price i'm sure sony its doing everyhting they can to give the consumer the best rpice they can within reason of that i have not doubt. and i think they probably have all their own devs make games plus back awhole lot of other devs aswell so that they have lots of games coming down the pipe line.

happy gaming

I'm all for it if the price is right and utilization can be universal. If this will double up as an extra monitor in my living room, then I can put my worries about compromising with the woman and her The Voice addiction to rest. Headphones and a monitor strapped to my eyes sounds safe enough.
