Ubisoft "Very Pleased" With Both Next-Generation Consoles

We have to wait until May 21 for the new Xbox unveiling, but we know analysts, journalists, developers and gamers seem to love the PlayStation 4.

Ubisoft boss Yannis Mallat wants to be an equal opportunity optimist, as he says his company is "very pleased" with both systems on tap (presumably for later this year).

According to a recent CVG interview, Mallat said the PS4 and Xbox 720 will open up new development opportunities in regards to creativity and innovation. We're hoping that's the case, although we're not necessarily anticipating a lot of innovation with this year's cross-generation title, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. But we could be wrong; who knows? Said Mallat:

"We're very pleased with each new system when they eventually come because it comes with its own opportunities for creativity, innovation and new things. We really rely on our creatives to do that."

We've heard similar statements from other developers, but they haven't compared the two machines in question yet. Obviously, that's because we all have to wait for Microsoft's official unveiling of the new Xbox. But we'd be willing to bet that Microsoft's machine boasts the same sort of accessibility the PS4 features...

Yeah I imagine they are going to be pretty similar machine so the pressure will be on developers to do something creative with basic architecture.

I expect the difference we'll see is not in the internal architecture but in the controller. I would bet that Microsoft comes out whole hog with integrated Kinect as the big selling feature to the X720. That's how they'll want to separate themselves.

I predict that Microsoft has concluded that the casual market is the way to go, and they believe Nintendo has fumbled the ball with the WiiU. Now they want to pick it up and run with it. Their system will be technically strong enough to keep pace with the PS4 for multiplatform games, but their real focus will be making this the KinectBox.

I just don't understand how 2 different architectures can run the same game almost 100% the same even though each console has it's own architecture. Can someone explain? Or is it basically the same thing?

Compilers take the same sourcecode and writes it for the target hardware. It is massaged to take advantage of, or ignore the differences, in each target. In other words, it's magic.

What I'm scared about is that Microsoft has had time to change their system specs to make it stronger than PS4. If that's the issue, then PS4 might be in a spot of trouble.

Sanguine my brother.
Yeah, that's something that worries me too. However, if they changed a lot to make it better than the ps4, they're only going to be hurting themselves in reliability. I wouldn't worry to much about what MS has in store, because it's never packed much of a punch.

Impossible. You can't change hardware specs at this late stage. The hardware for both consoles is set in stone.

Nevertheless, Microsoft HAS at least made one change to their plans after Sony announced the PS4, namely pushing back the Xbox reveal from April 24th to May 21st.

High five for the DB reference, Knight!

I do. But making small changes, like increase in RAM and stuff, possible, right?. That's a small thing. I wasn't talking about changing the entire architecture.

Huh?

My point was that Ubisoft has not been afraid of telling it like it is even if it's negative in the past, so why should they be afraid of that now.
