Sony Talks Dual Shock 4 In New Video

It's the most in-depth look yet at Sony's new Dual Shock 4 controller, which will debut with their upcoming new console.

Sony has released a video today that outlines the new features found in the gamepad that was officially unveiled in February. It's a must-see.

Sony product planner Toshimasa Aoki first explains that the company spoke with their first-party development teams, and asked what the designers wanted to see in the Dual Shock 4. This falls right in line with how they approached the PS4 itself; i.e., going to game makers and getting feedback. Then Sony senior vice president of product development Scott Rohde added:

"Everything's been tuned. The feel of the analog sticks, the sensitivity of both different types of triggers. And in addition to that, there have been all these features added to it, without compromising the basic feel of the DualShock."

The new controller really is quite nifty. The lightbar, used in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye, can track the position of multiple people in the room. This lets the PS4 detect who's who for when you're playing cooperatively. Then there's the touchpad, which supports multi-touch and it should be "very comfortable" for players. Check it out:

I just hope the pad doesn't end up a forgotten gimmick. And I want to know if those triggers are ultra sensitive like the DS3 ones that get pressed when you put the controller on a surface or the pointy design nullifies that problem.

I'm looking forward to the external speakers and how it'll sound and improve gaming experience. I think it's a brilliant idea. I can sort of imagine racing in Gran Turismo and just hearing the engine sound for that perfect shift point.

The Wii mote has external speakers and everything coming from those sound like garbage. Hopefully Sony places higher quality components in theirs.

Yeah, that's what I hear a lot from Wii owners. I'm not expecting mindblowing 3D sound, but I'm not expecting garbage from Sony either. Perhaps I am being too hopeful/faithful with Sony on tinny little speakers coming from a controller, but I've never experienced it so I'm looking forward to it.

i think that they would use the speakers they used for the vita an if you aint ever messed with one i can tell you they sound good for how small they are...

The speaker in the controller to me is kinda pointless. I use gaming headphones when playing any game either online or a campaign. I will not be able to hear the DS4's speaker.

there's probably gonna be an option to turn it off just like how you can turn off the rumble for DS3

Of course it's pointless if you're using headphones. That's like saying touchpads on laptops are useless because you use a mouse.

I'll be curious to see the battery life with vibration, lights, And sounds. Not a fan of having multiple controllers just because I have to swap them every day.

One of the reasons why I want DS3s to be compatible.

I won't be interested in the PSeye, so hope the base model PS4 doesn't come with it and thus making it cheaper than the premium model if it does come with the PSeye. And you should have the option to turn off the light on the controller to conserve battery life when controller is wireless.

I think the change I like most about this new controller is the simplest one of all. Concave analog nubs! My thumbs will be eternally grateful!

I do hope the L2 and R2 triggers are tuned a bit better. On the DS3 I'm always accidentally hitting them when I move or set the controller down.

I'm not too worried about battery life. I've got a couple 15 ft USB cables and I grew up with cabled controllers so it's no biggie to play with them plugged in if they die on me.

I might but the only one but I'm disappointed that they went with concave analog sticks. I love the stick the way that were.

I don't think you have to worry about that, it's not as deep concave as the 360 controller, plenty of convex judging by the video. Me I like Sony's appoach on that new design, I have a feeling I will like the feel of it better, I have numb grips on my analog sticks because over time the stock grip will wear down when playing intense games.

Looks very good - they were about due for a bit of work on the controller, and the work they've done is pretty much perfect. We haven't seen it yet, but I actually predict some pretty interesting things from the touchpad - mouse-like cursor control and whatnot ;).

The new controller looks simply totally *awesome*.
Love how it seems to merge the familiar and the new, high-tech.

I hope it is a bit heavier than the DS3 - I always thought the DS3 were a tad too light.

With built in rumble, speakers, and touchpad integration, it should be a bit heavier, unless Sony used like carbon fiber materials or something. If that textured grip is a bit rubberish, that may add a teeny bit of weight as well. Not sure if the light sensor adds weight, but if it does, then bam, another loader.

Did you ever play with the original sixaxis PS3 (no rumble) controller?, those were lighter in weight then the DS3.

really like the new design of it, looks allot more rounded and comfortable than the DS3.
i just hope $ony has found a better plastic to make it out of, the DS3 feels like the flimsiest cheapest plastics only american car manufactures manage to find.......
need to drop the price of them too, 80 bucks for something that costs a fraction of that to make!

The share button interests me. But I don't get this sharing of epic moments thing. Usually an epic moment is not realized until it is passed. Pressing the share button to send it to someone seems to me will have to have a certain amount of time built in where it knows how far back to go? You aren't going to stop this epic moment in the middle so you can begin sharing. I'm sure they have thought of this but I'd like more info. I'm REALLY interested in the ability to view (or let people view) the games others are playing real time. Even if you or the your friend doesn't have the game. For me this is actually pretty interesting.

from what sony had said is that its goin to jus record like the last 15 mins of game play so you dont have to press it before something epic happens, jus hit it after...
