Would Low Scores For Bloodborne Dissuade Dark Souls Fans?

Yes, I know. "I like what I like; I don't need reviewers to tell me" is the common refrain.

And yet, a game that scores better invariably has a better chance of selling more copies. It's just the way of the industry, whether you rail against it or not.

The question, though, involves the types of gamers and fans in question. For example, JRPG fanatics often purchase JRPGs that earn mediocre scores from critics. The fans will tell you the reviewers are simply being biased and stupid, and they don't understand the fanbase in question. Any IP with a niche following has experienced this in some capacity, it seems.

Now, the Dark Souls games really only appeal to the core gamers out there. The casuals have no interest, just as they have no interest in Bloodborne. Therefore, perhaps these core action/RPG lovers will be buying From Software's latest, regardless of what the scores are. Then again, maybe PlayStation 4 owners are little gun-shy about exclusives that fall shy of expectations... Don't forget that Demon's Souls and both Dark Souls games had the benefit of widespread critical acclaim. If Bloodborne doesn't get that, I wonder if sales will be disappointing.

The Order sold well, and it got trashed reviews. Not understanding where you are going with this.

But no, I'd straight up tell everyone the reviewer is talking right out of their behind as most tend to do and play the game for yourself and stop following the opinion of someone who does not share the same gaming taste as you do.

Because most reviewers who review something are clearly not the ones to be reviewing something. A racer fan reviewing an action platformer would have a less than satisfying time with the game.

So a Souls fan would not give two damns what the reviews are for Bloodborne as everyone's already gotten their pre-orders/money saved for it.

It sold ok, but certanly not well. Especially, considering it had massive hype on the hottest console on the planet during a bonafide AAA drought. One might even label them poor, given everything it had in its favor. Reviews and the word of mouth confirming said reviews certainly caused some damage.

It sold well-ish. Certainly could have done better if it had done better with reviewers, probably. Saying it didn't sell well is just incorrect, though. It achieved a successful sold through number relative to consoles that are on the market.

To explain, it sold to 5% of the user base. That's not only pretty decent; it's a better ratio than TLOU sold and just under half of the ratio that Halo 3 sold through.

(Numbers are fun)

I strongly disagree with you Knightzane. The last thing I want is an industry of biased reviewers. Take you example of racing games, I don't care much for them, but how am I meant to take a reviewer seriously when they aren't professional and let personal interest take over. If I don't share the shame interest someone who only focuses on Racing games their opinion is invalid to me because they're enthusiasm is more elevated than my own. While a reviewer which is open to mutliple genre's is less biased and pro's and con's feel more genuine.

It wouldn't be an Underdog post if it didn't contain a flimsy counterargument, bouyed by flawed numbers. Clearly, you're twisting numbers to prove....hell, if i know. You're counting Last of Us first 2 weeks (though, it's now a near 1 in 10 attach rate), Halo 3 total vs 360 total lifetime (which is still 18% which is only slightly down from the 20% from it's first two weeks.), and just pure BS to say a game which from a generous estimate has sold around 800,000 on a 20.2 million userbase, is 5% instead of 4%. Didn't do terrible but certainly not 'well'. Honestly, your argument is a non factor, unless you believe sequel sales grow in exact parallel to system sales, which is an absolute rarity. By that logic, Sony were fools to not back a Heavenly Sword sequel when it had a ten percent console attach rate. You're right about one thing: numbers are fun.

Now, toddle off. Come back when you have something a little better, cousin.

Articles have been published by various sources about The Order reaching gold status. (1 million) You can't use vgchartz on a brand new game currently since the last time it was updated was nearly a month ago. (I'm assuming that's where you got your incorrect 800k assessment?)

I made the grotesque assumption that you might have an idea about what's going on in the industry. Don't worry, I won't do that again.

Also, TLOU has not sold 8.5 million copies on PS3. Not sure where you get 10% from. For someone nitpicking over an (incorrect) 1% miscalculation (that wasn't miscalculated), I would think you'd be more careful than to go off the mark by 4%.

Finally, Halo 3 sold through 14% to date. Stop pulling random numbers out of the air.

No need to get personal. Not sure why you're so offended. I didn't call you any names. Just pointed out you are wrong.

I haven't read anything about The Order reaching 1 million (a link would help) but, I've been playing this gen more than reading about it so, you've got me there.

As for the Halo numbers, I went by the official MS numbers of 14.5 (which gave me 17.5. I did round up) and for TLOU I went by Sony's numbers of 7 million sold and said NEARLY 1 in 10( keyword: nearly) For The Order, I took the 550k and I added 250k based on the pescentage of sales drop in the recent UK articles about Dying Light outselling it for two weeks and the 43k VG listed for the following week with a slight sales downgrade. If I'm totally wrong on that, and it has officially sold 1 million, then that's my fault.

Still, your 5 percent equals "it sold well-ish" argument doesn't disprove my statement that "it sold ok", in the slightest. It really doesnt. Concrete numbers are what really matter in this industry, percentages are best used in sports. And I'm still not sure how you can compare it to Halo 3's attach rate, two weeks OR lifetime, but good luck with that.

I called you cousin. It's like man, homey, or bro. Nothing to get all twisted up about. As far as my terse tone towards you, as simply as I can put it: you're annoying. You interject youraelf into comments, most times not with a valid, cohesive point( no matter how well the sentences and paragraphs are structured), but with a desire to get virtual pat on head or some sort of affirmation from strangers. I find that ever so strange. But you've called me names and insulted my intelligence before so let's not start crying now.

Kid: Good to see your ego hasn't suffered any despite the countless times you've been flat wrong. "Toddle off?" Grow the fu** up.

And aside from numbers, Sony WAS foolish not to pursue a Heavenly Sword sequel. Most will agree with that. You wouldn't know, of course, as you obviously stopped playing PlayStation games after the PS2 era.

And for the record, 1 million is platinum status, not gold. The only gold status I know of in gaming is in reference to it being ready to be pressed for distribution. Could be wrong though.

Never claimed I didn't have a tone with you. I clearly explained why. lol.

Yeah, but I'm ok with that. Because you're wrong.

Also, I enjoy conflict. And I get off on the fact that it bothers you. I also get off on the fact that I don't need you to agree with me to know you're wrong. Whereas your insecurities make it impossible for you to not be annoyed by people not agreeing with you.

I think what bothers you most, though, is the fact that I see right through you, while you can't quite get a handle on me. That's fantastic.

Only you would think that criticism of posting habits is a personal attack. As I said before this is an affirmation for you. And if I had an issue with people disagreeing with me I wouldnt have the rep of being the disagreeable fellow thatI do here.

And since I'm sure you'll not be giving me a link about the platinum status from any of various sites you mentioned, I guess we should end this. Besides, you do a little too much "getting off" on our interactions for my liking, bud. lol.

My takeaway from all of this is that you did mention one absolute truth in all of this. Too bad it's surrounded by so much wrong. Thank you for acknowledging my writing skills.

However:
"Only you would think that criticism of posting habits is a personal attack. "

You straight up called me "annoying". Which is fine, but dude, man up. Stop acting like you're purely objective. You're a troll. Just admit it. I promise I won't think any less of you for it.

In fact, I'll go first. I admit I've totally called you names and insulted your intelligence. Whether on here or elsewhere, I've referred to you as a dumba$$, moron, troll, idiot, flake, hypocrite, and at one point, I even referred to you as a damaged grown child who is suffering due to either an abusive father or emotionally unavailable mother (or both) that we should give a little extra attention to, whether kind or not is irrelevant, in order to at least validate your need for attention and feed that emotionally starved corner of your psyche.

I admit it! Guilty! (And I'll probably do it again, btw. You see, I'm far from perfect.)

But stop pretending you don't do the exact same to a lesser degree of ability. It'll feel better. And at least then I'd be completely unable to call you a hypocrite with a straight face.

Underdog, just don't bother. It should be clear by now that Kid is someone who could never in a million years admit when he's wrong, and it's obvious to everyone here that he only showed up to cause trouble. We also have yet to see any evidence of him playing any game on a PlayStation console in the past decade.

So just let it be. You don't get anywhere with superiority complexes.

adults will play the game regardless of reviews, esp if they had their eye on it. children will base playing this off of reviews. so how many adult gamers do we have over children?

if this game is as hard as demon souls, no kid will touch it and call this game "g@#" bc its not cod.

It depends. If it's because the game is buggy and broken, then it will possibly have an adverse effect on sales. If it is due to a difference in opinion in how a game should be, then maybe not so much

well that i entirely possible but i doubt it will score badly the game looks like it will get a good score i'd say in the 9's despite what type of people it is aiming to get to buy it i think it'll sell 1mil+ cos the fans for this sort of game come out in droves in saying that i will be getting it i'm just not sure when atm as there are various factors i need to consider before hand

happy gaming

Nah, low scores would do nothing to stop me from getting this game.

Unless the game is fundamentally broken or something and just doesn't work then I would just assume it was too hard for the reviewers.

Low scores are one thing. Reviewers can be biased, and I take that into consideration when reading reviews. But when I hear hype like, "The devs are having a hard time beating this game," then that gives me pause. I love the style and gameplay of the Souls series, but a game so difficult that the designers can't handle it doesn't really push me toward wanting to purchase the game.
